In response to the last bit of the review, It's because Stalia was prepubescent. Without the hormones forcing her thoughts towards it all the time, it's easy to ignore and not think about it. I expect it to change dramatically when puberty hits. The gender-bending subplot is still there, it's just on hold for now.
