It does two things I know of. *grins* You support an author and also when they post something up on their page like this, you get notified. It's a good way to get news from an author aside from twitter!

If the author tends to write well and in interesting genres, I tend to follow them
(though I'm honestly not sure what that does since I haven't received any notifications from authors I follow... *shrugs*)
