If the site "World Wide Words" is to be believed, it's a Scottish word that's...apparently become more American than British or Scottish? If so, I'm guessing it's from the eastern side of the country, I live in the west (most familiar with the areas around Idaho, Utah, and Oregon) and I've never heard it.
Well, could be coastal west too, but it feels like something from the east to me.
