The extremely slow and cheesy writer with a craze for angst, nudibranchs and the color blue~

"Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit."

Yes, disliking your own work is like how you hate listening to recorded sound audio of yourself. What I do is write it all, publish it, then erase it from my memory, or at least try to and hope that I surprise myself when I read it. I should inform you that it doesn't work because apparently, I'm one of those people who remember things in vivid detail via association.clear.png

I read a chapter, remember everything after that then try to delete it which ends up with me hiding it in my deepest subconsciousness until I read a sentence from it and it floods my memories with information I'd rather weren't the major spoilers I thought of for the future as I was writing. Having a good memory for words that aren't math or physics-based is hard!clear.png

@Blue_Spider_Lily I hope the two of us can get to a point where we are more content with our work and the memory of what we've written won't make us cringe so hard clear.png

I will be fine! I know it! I'll just not read my work a long time after I finish it and hope that by the time I am reading it, my problem will have solved itself. Hehe, one can dream, right?clear.png

Reminder to self that every writer experiences feelings of inferiority about their work and that writing in spite of that is an act of bravery. Defeat (write) the dragon (self-doubt) to discover the hidden gems (talent, self-expression, experience) in the dragon’s lair (yourself) clear.png

Yay! More productivity! Spread the joy and write more~!

I agree @summervaca99! The discord really does help. I go there and I either instantly get the motivation to write after someone ignores me in the middle of a conversation or am guilt-tripped into doing it when I log back on to see people having already sprinted. It works, as strange as it sounds and I've been making progress but it still isn't enough with things like school and other stuff to consider. Hah, life is hard!clear.png

@Blue_Spider_Lily

Yessss, go write some more! I know I am one of the biggest guilt-trippers in there, too! clear.png Sorry about school and other things... *pats Xea on the head*

Now go write more BL anyway! clear.png

I will! You just wait!clear.png

To put [BL] and [GL] in the title or not, that is the question. clear.png

Writing eastern-style webnovels while coming from a western background is certainly challenging (having to research and fact-check constantly) but it’s not impossible. Surely there can be benefits to it as well... seeing the genres from different angles and whatnot... well, writing is still challenging regardless of whether you’re writing “what you know” or not.

“Write what you want to understand” is a quote that helps in this case.

I fully agree with this; I hate research so much lately.

Mostly because 99% of it ends up being unused (just like from-scratch worldbuilding). You can't just put it all in the story, but only the bits that move the story on... and thus, most of the research and worldbuilding seem like such a waste of time!

I want to add all the interesting things I find in the research but must not overload the story... maybe a “fun facts” section can be added at the bottom  of the chap clear.png

Blue_Spider_Lily · May 2, 2021

That's why I research the bare minimum unless it's something specific I know I'm going to use. If it isn't entirely based on reality, it makes my job even easier as I can just use my minimal knowledge to write something that fulfils my purpose.

Somehow, I keep coming up with novels centered on curses and strange maladies. ?

summervaca99 · Author · Dec 14, 2020

clear.png I’ve got so many novel ideas (mainly BL) but I have to stick to one at a time bc otherwise they won’t get finished clear.png

Yeah, that is a mood clear.png.

I feel personal pain at that statement.
