Knowledge.

Three thousand years since the inception of the Anno Domini epoch, knowledge continues to be the most important pursuit for the human civilization.

Actually, scratch that.

—A wish.

A desire that lives within an imaginary realm.

A realm that is only reachable during an ephemeral illusion. That is, a dream.

But what if we could turn dreams into reality?

Such would be an impossibility, for we are not deities.

Fine. Then how about this?

What if there was something that could bestow an experience so immersive that it could replace reality?

Such would be a possibility, for we are beings with brains.

And with that, there is only one piece missing. A single piece that could turn this possibility into an inevitability: technology.

A brain: something that contains a self.

Technology: something that can monopolize a brain.

Combine the two together, and the result is…

Yes—virtual reality.

A reality where dreams become real. No—where wishes come true.

“I want to fly.” Sure.

“I want to kill.” Go ahead.

“I want to copulate.” No problem.

And so, hedonism was solved.

—Or was it?

Humanity then became spoiled.

“I want to know everything.”

Error.

Now the plot rewinds.

Knowledge.

The year is 3013.

Almost everyone is literally living the dream.

The rest are those whose wish could not come true—that is, those whose wish was deemed an error; and at the same time, those who had yet to be spoiled.

With only a single wish remaining, to wish had become equivalent to know.

Which is to say, dreams no longer emerged from wishes.

After all, is it possible to dream about knowing everything?

Such a concept exemplifies a koan.

Then.

Those who could not be spoiled will continue trudging in reality.

Thus.

The reverence of knowledge had reached an unprecedented apex.

And from the coping of their own ignorance, a solution arose: Create a genius.

—A genius.

Someone who has perfected the art of extrapolation.

Someone who effortlessly creates knowledge.

Someone beyond their time.

Indeed, if the genetics of the smartest minds were crossbred together, a genius could be born. This was an undeniable truth. In fact, humanity had already been using this method to create the best crops, the best pets, the best bees, etc. All they had to do was just crossbreed over and over and—

But there was a problem.

A single limitation that held everything back: time.

The brain itself—a biological organ—is limited by its very own fundamental constitution. With nutrients as its power and neurons as its processors, it was simply inefficient.

So then, a genius proposed the solution: Emulate the brain.

A brain: something that can think creatively.

Technology: something that is limited only by processing power.

Humanity: currently a Type II civilization harnessing the power of innumerable stars.

Combine the three together, and the result is…

The singularity.

A brain—no, a cogitation unbounded by time. Rather, overcoming time itself.

A nootropic in which its effects can be stacked infinitely.

A machine that could solve the universe.

In theory, the solution was possible.

However, in practice, its complexity was of magnitudes too high.

An overwhelming theory that was too sanguine to be realized.

Proof that humanity was not yet adept enough.

And so, to evade despair, a remedy was needed. A stopgap that could serve as a convenient band-aid:

Explore the universe.

Find other planets with intelligent life.

Infiltrate them.

And reap their knowledge.

Great.

The process should be simple, right?

1. Find a planet with intelligent life.

2. Inspect it with nanomachines—codename: Inspection.

3. Send down people to confirm the data—codename: Infiltration.

But, after ten planets, something was clearly wrong.

The same problem had occurred every single time: conflict would arise, technology was exploited in retaliation, and the world ended in ruin.

And so, the process was altered.

1. Find a planet with intelligent life.

2. Inspect it with nanomachines—Inspection.

3. Send down someone to confirm the data—Infiltration.

4. No supervision, observation, or interference.

And a promise: Do not reveal human technology.

In other words, only a single person explores the planet and everyone else is completely shut out.

Now for the real question: who’s going to do it?

No—Rather, who is the best suited for it?

The answer was left to be calculated by a supercomputer. After Inspection had collected a sufficient amount of planetary data, that data would then be compared with a list of special candidates, and among them, one would be selected.

So then.

It’s time for an introduction.

The year is 3052.

The process had been proven successful by several other planets.

Another planet was discovered three years earlier.

And today, step two was deemed sufficiently complete.

Therefore, it was time for someone to be chosen.

Below, the record of the selected one:

UID: Aria,

Name: Cerelious,

Age: 2.1EY,

Type: Scion,

Progenitors: {

    Genitor_UID: Ainz,

    Genetrix_UID: Anna

},
