Benny arrogantly nudged Zoe's shoulder, a confident, defiant expression on his face.
Angston heard this and immediately went into the room, turning on the computer and setting up equipment. He also prepared a pile of fruits and snacks that had been bought for the opening celebration.
"Can't go a day without bragging, can you?" Zoe teased Benny with a smile.
She rolled her eyes at him.
"What do you mean by bragging? With our combined gaming skills, we can't beat the pros?" Benny puffed his chest, speaking as if it were perfectly reasonable.
Zoe left speechless.
To be honest, Zoe could indeed carry Benny, a "dead weight," through professional matches, and Benny wasn't even that much of a burden.
After a moment of silence, Zoe didn't reply.
However, Benny was still in high spirits and continued his boasting. "Let me tell you, back when I was in the Arab Kingdom across the Red River, do you know why I was wanted and had to leave the country?"
"What?" Zoe raised an eyebrow, curious.
Though she suspected Benny was likely exaggerating, there was a chance some of it was true, and her curiosity got the better of her.
"I joined a famous gang and helped them design counterfeit banknotes," Benny said.
"And then... heh heh heh..." Benny's laugh cut off abruptly.
Zoe, not sparing him, rolled her eyes. "Come on, tell the truth."
"Alright, alright."
"To be honest, we were planning something big, to deal a blow to the Arab Kingdom's financial system."
"But that guy who was supposed to handle the color-changing ink was too careless. He got caught, and we were all arrested. Lucky for me, I ran fast."
"I should've handled the color-changing ink!" Benny said with a hint of regret.
Stealing and forging artworks was one thing, but the attention they drew from forging banknotes was unmatched. Half of the Arab Kingdom’s Security Bureau was after them.
That famous international gang ended up with very few survivors. After that, Benny never got involved in such risky operations again. Looking back, he kind of missed it.
Hearing this, Zoe smiled and patted Benny on the shoulder.
She had to admit, Benny’s past was certainly colorful.
Just as she was about to say something, her heightened perception detected Lynette and Dahlia downstairs.
Lynette’s call soon came through to Benny’s phone: "Lightbulb, I’m downstairs. What’s the plan for the opening celebration?"
"Let’s play some games first, test out the gaming configuration of our esports guesthouse, then we’ll link the guesthouse on all platforms and officially open. After that, we can go to a restaurant for lunch?" Benny responded.
"Angston, open two more computers. When your sister-in-law and the others arrive, we’ll do a five-player team."
Benny grinned, then grabbed Zoe to go downstairs and meet the two women.
The purpose of today's eSports guesthouse opening was to show his girlfriend, Lynette, that he wasn't just sitting around doing nothing. So of course, he invited her over.
When the four of them returned to the fifth floor, Angston had finished setting up and was waiting.
They sat in front of the computers in the living room. Even the workaholic Angston was asked to sit down by Benny.
"What are we playing? Counter Strike again?" Lynette asked, casually biting into a slice of watermelon from the table.
"Sure, Zoe’s good at CS, let her carry us," Benny said with a smile, opening the gaming platform.
Since CS's official servers often had unstable connections and were rife with cheaters, most players preferred gaming on the platform.
"Zoe, carry us!" Dahlia said while peeling an orange, carefully handing a segment to Zoe as if it were a reward for helping them.
Zoe couldn't help but smile as she took the orange.
She opened the game platform and saw a large ad on the homepage: 【Sun City IBM will be held on April 8th at the Sun City Financial Center. Tickets are available online now!】
"Zoe, if you're not playing professionally, would you be interested in watching the matches?" Benny asked, noticing the ad.
Last time they played together, a former pro player had invited Zoe, but Zoe had declined. Everyone knew her ambitions weren't in that direction.
But watching the match?
"Do you guys want to go? If so, I can join you," Zoe replied casually while warming up in the game, quickly headshotting enemies with a USP.
Her response made it sound like she might be interested, but in reality, she wasn’t planning to go.
In the past, she occasionally watched CS matches for entertainment since the game itself was famous internationally.
But now...
Honestly, it was a bit harsh to admit, but watching the matches felt like everyone was just playing house. The strategies, teamwork, and tactics were still somewhat enjoyable to watch.
But the pros' aim, positioning, and reaction times? She now felt like those actions were not even human.
Could the person on the other side of the screen really be human? She could do better just using her feet!
Of course, Zoe understood that it wasn’t because the pros were bad. It was because she was so strong that the equipment limited her performance. The intensity she could currently unleash wasn’t even close to her full potential. The refresh rate of the monitor only allowed her to display a fraction of her true strength.
She scored 100 because the test had a 100-point limit; pros scored 95 because their abilities peaked at 95.
So, she wasn’t interested in watching the match.
If her friends wanted her to go, she could go along. But if she were alone, watching the match wasn’t nearly as fun as working out at home.
"Alright, let me know if you want to go," Benny said, knowing that Zoe wasn’t interested.
The group played for a while, then went to a nearby restaurant for lunch.
After Lynette and Dahlia left, Benny spent some time teaching Zoe about signal modulation and demodulation, as well as baseband signals. To keep up with Zoe's impressive learning speed, Benny had reviewed some materials the night before, solidifying his knowledge.
They didn’t study for long in the afternoon, just about one to two hours. Considering that the material was enough for Zoe to practice with for a while and that she still had plenty of time to learn more later, Benny called it a day after a relatively tiring session.
Everyone went their separate ways and did their own things.
Zoe lay on her bed, reading a novel while listening to the increasingly smooth traffic broadcast music, playing with Platinum, and mentally preparing for her training later in the evening.
This was the simple, peaceful routine of Zoe’s life, quiet but comforting.
As she gazed out at the gradually brightening moon, she squinted her eyes slightly.
Tomorrow was February 24th, Tuesday.
The seventh cycle of her sleep evolution was almost upon her, and she felt a tinge of anticipation.
Or perhaps, she was always eager for each evolution. The visible growth, the rewarding feeling of constant improvement, and the excitement that came with each new ability were unparalleled.
