Bai li yue shook her head at the situation. She looked at the food and drink with distaste.

'This is blatant bullying.'

Blatant or not, she noticed that apart from them, nobody was raising any objection. They clearly know what is going, but chose to turn a blind eye. Was it because the Purple wind was powerful or were they just looking out for themselves?

Her first introduction to the larger cultivation world had already left a bad taste in her mouth. Fortunately she wasn't discouraged. It would be naive of her to believe that harmony was status quo everywhere.

I have to go into the world to gain experience. So even though I dislike these kinds of dealings, I must face them. This is the world I am now a part of.

The matches began with little fanfare once the initial outcry from the Thousand bamboo immortal sect students died down.

Wang do was one of the unfortunate ones. He met Wen shan shan in the first round and admitted defeat without drawing his weapon. The crowd jeered when he walked away without fighting. They had come to watch a fight and they were being denied their due. The same thing happened a few more times when contestants of the Thousand bamboo immortal sect met each other on the battle stage. Aside from contestants who were closely matched, and couldn't determine a winner without fighting, the others chose to admit defeat. Kong tian, Li long and Du meng were eliminated in this manner.

An elder announced the first match between the Thousand bamboo immortal sect and the Purple wind sect. Zi yu, turned out to be the tall senior who had spoken to them during the rest in the compound. She stood in front of a muscled man. His robe stretched tight over his flexing muscles.

Sect leader Chen miao yen, sighed.

Chief three horn? When did he become a student of the Purple wind sect?

'Sect leader lei, aren't you looking down on us? Isn't that the chief of the three horn gang? She asked.

Sect leader Lei wasn't the least bit perturbed by the question. He already had an answer prepared.

'What you see is true. He is the chief of the three horn gang, but what most people don't know is that he is now a student of my Purple wind sect. We are always on the lookout for extraordinary talent. I see no reason to reject a good seed.'

She scoffed at his explanation.

'You are working too hard. Someone might think that you are afraid of the Thousand bamboo immortal sect.'

Lei xiao yu gnashed his teeth and hit the arm of his chair with a loud bang. She ignored the angry waves rolling off him.

'Sect leader Chen, the conflict between my Purple wind and the immortal sect is no place for you.'

'So now i can't even comment? Lei xiao yu, you are still too young. Do you think you are the first person to target the Thousand bamboo immortal sect? Many have come before you but what happened? They are still here. Maybe your hunger makes you believe that you are capable of swallowing them, but i am still waiting for you to stop acting like a coward.'

'You've always remained neutral. Don't tell me that this is you choosing sides.'

'If i was indeed choosing a side, do you think you can take me on?'

'Ahem', sect leader chang kong cleared his throat, interrupting them.

'We are here for the tournament. It is not the time to wash our dirty laundry in front of delegate Wu.'

'Sect leader chang kong is right. We'll forget the matter for now.' Chen miao yen nodded at chang kong and went back to spectating.

Zi yu was on the attack, her sword still in its scabbard hit her opponent in the chest and sent him stumbling back. He caught himself at the edge of the ring and stalked forward like a predator eyeing its next prey. He twirled his sabre in a dance around him.

'Little girl, bring out your weapon, or you'll lose.'

'You're not worthy.'

'Then prepare to lose.'

He barreled towards her with his sabre aiming for her neck. Zi yu stepped out of range with ease, tapping his leg with the scabbard on her way out. When he attacked again, she danced around him and tapped his arms. The dance continued for a few minutes until chief three horn, now known as zhong yuan began to see red. His attacks grew more ferocious. If his weapon were to land on her, then she'd be lucky to get away without serious injury.

'Little girl, he bit out between his clenched jaw. 'I told you to bring out your weapon.'

'If you say so' she sighed and grasped the hilt of her sword to unsheath it. She drew the sword an inch out of its sheath when a piercing sound rang out. It was coming from the sword. Zhong yuan fell to his knees with a loud cry. He felt a thousand cuts opening all over his body as the sound struck his ear. Through his pain he heard a calm voice.

'You should admit defeat.'

'No'

Her reply was more pain as the sound grew louder and then vanished. He breathed a sigh of relief and collapsed in a heap of trembling flesh.

'Zi yu wins!' The elder overseeing their fight announced and ordered healers over to cater to the injured zhong yuan.

The win sent the immortal bamboo students into a frenzy of celebration.

'Congratulations sect leader chang kong. It is good to catch a glimpse of the former great sect once in a while.' Chen miao yen said with appreciation.

Wo dong shi stroked his beard as he watched zi yu walk back to her seat.

'That martial skill is quite impressive. I would like to satisfy my curiosity. Would sect leader Chang be willing to let me have a look at it?'

This man's greed knows no boundaries.

'Delegate wu must have had his facts mixed up. Ask anyone here, they will tell you that my immortal sect does not have such a wonderful skill lying around. We barely have enough to support our students. What they have, they earn it themselves through hard work.'

'What about the flying aircraft?'

'Of course, it is the same. Second elder Qi acquired the fan during his travels. I hope delegate Wu will remember his dignified position and pay no heed to those who seek to sow contention.' He bowed to Wu dong shi who continued to stroke his beard in silence.

Back on the battle stage, it was Huang rong's turn. He was also one of the six facing the Purple wind sect. Bai li yue's mood had been elevated by Zi yu's victory. She was excited for what was to come. She had seen Huang rong fight before so she knew that if he grasped the right moment to attack, he could attain victory despite the difference in levels.

His opponent was similar to Zhong yuan in muscle mass. He withdrew the heavy sword strapped to his back and stuck it into the ground with a heavy thud. He looked at Huang rong with a condescending look when Huang rong didn't immediately admit defeat. He stood calmly with a firm grip on his sword.

'Begin!'

His opponent heaved the heavy sword off the ground and swung it at Huang rong's head. The sword cut through the air without difficulty. He whirled around to face Huang rong who had dodged a moment ago. Sword raised, he closed the distance between them with aggressive pinpoint precision. He had seen zhong yuan crash and burn in an instant. He'd allowed a girl to play with him. That wasn't happening to him even though this boy didn't look like much of a threat. Appearances could be deceptive; better to finish the fight quickly.

Huang rong was constantly being forced on the defensive. His sword arm was tingling from the couple of times he had tried to block an incoming blow. Ever since, he decided to dodge for the time being until he found an opening. No matter how small, he would take it.

Bai li yue and the other immortal bamboo students watched with bated breath. They were all hoping for a miracle. That miracle came true a second later when Huang rong's rhythm changed. He appeared transformed, a new being, no longer restrained by the same laws that bound his opponent. His body flickered here and there for an instant, swinging his sword and appearing a few metres behind his opponent. He flicked the blood of his sword and sheathed. Behind him, there was a spray of blood and a thud. Another Purple wind student was down. The frenzy of celebrating students doubled.

'Did you see that?'

'I couldn't see anything. Too fast. Too fast.'

His speed was too fast for some of the spectators to follow, but the result was clear for all to see. Amidst the jubilation, Bai li yue felt a tug on the end of her robe. A green robed student was beside her.

'The first elder sent me to call you. He is waiting for you in the immortal sect student residence.'

She nodded and slipped away with a worried frown. She walked to the meeting place in a small wooded section of the Purple wind sect to find the first elder frantically pacing.
