It's like Earth if a time-traveling butterfly dropped in...10 million years ago maybe? And someone cranked the sea level waaay up.
Looks like someone took a steamroller to mainland Europe and a hammer to the British Isles.
whens the next chapter?
Where is Roxy's home? Somewhere in Confederacy?
Yep. South-eastern part, close to Pharos.
Ok i have a question I just thought of. You said in the comments of chapter 49 that alyssa was born in the USSR... but how could she have played the otome game if they were born then... unless she was born at the end of the USSR's reign say 1980-1991. Then the first otome games release was around 1994? But it only got a Japanese market release I think. Or am I just going to much into the details?
Also I can't get the image of Alyssa drunk on vodka out of my head now. thanks for the map! Have a great day
So? She was born in USSR, but that doesn`t mean she DIED in USSR.
@Chop To firm it up, she was born in 1983 and was almost forty when the accident happened.
@Ata_ Almost 40, 37 is almost 40. And why not be from very slightly in the future? Doesn't affect anything.
@BobTheDevourer the world failed all CON, DEX, STR, INT, WIS, and CHA saves that had a DC of 10
@Cytotoxin This discussion has revived my desire for the author to give us a list of the languages Alyssa knows. And while we're at it give us a map of Champagne with all the relevant places marked please.
@crazedreader You already have a map. Interlude 6.
Alyssa can speak english and russian fluently, is a little rusty with ukrainian, and can cobble together some words in french, german and yiddish, though none at the level where she can hold a meaningful conversation.
Game memories had added some second-hand knowledge of french to it.
Which means that Alyssa is conversant within Champagne high society, can get by in low society, though with some difficulties, can get the gist of what is said by Krauts and can converse easily within certain parts of Confederacy and with some difficulty - in others. She can also have a chat with any ork that crosses her way.
Alyssa does NOT know...
A) Elven, it drifted far enough from old Champaignan that her limited knowledge is not of much use.
B) Any southern/oriental languages, just as oijan, pharan, bharatan or imperial (China is VERY arrogant in this setting, they refuse to refer to themselves as anything other then Divine Empire.).
@Cytotoxin First, this is Interlude 6, and I mean the detailed map of Champagne(Magnified, Bigger Words, etc.), and second thanks for the summary.
@Cytotoxin Couldn't Alyssa just brute force her way into polyglot status by leveraging her Shoggoth nature to remember things, that she used to mind-glomp and entire library in a few days? She just has to get her hands on translated books of books she's already read. Or she could set up thousands of eye-spiders in each of the language zones and task them to just listening to people and trying to learn the languages that way?
@0xFFF1 You can`t learn spoken language by books. You need to get the verbal info from actual language speakers. And yes, Alyssa theoretically could learn languages easier then pretty much anyone. The thing is, she`s actually pretty lazy about things she does not deem to be sufficiently important.
@Nosoundpog She doesn`t expect Sultanate to remain an issue long enough for that time investment to pay off.
Looks like a land that's quite consolidated, with a small number of large empires and few smaller states. Rather like Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. And Alyssa just gave them all modern technology.
Oh this can't possibly end in catastrophe.
F in the chat for all of antiquity except Egypt basically, no Italy, Spain/Iberia, or Greece equivalents. Although it does make for a more interesting world, equivalent Roman influence and it's consequences are the death if so many interesting worlds.
Rip Italy.
Oh, Ashenvale is much more south than I imagined it to be. Say, the Gillespie Dukedom was mentioned to be 32% of the Champagne territory, but it was also mentioned to be a far northern holding. It'd be really neat if you could show a map with the Dukedom borders on it, roughly speaking, as I'm having a tough time imagining it.
If I had to venture a guess, I would assume it something akin to this: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/819357966146732045/1042173824826880010/image.png
Am I close to reality?
Actually, more "stretched along the mountains" then this. I`ll see what can be done. And, well... the exact borders of duchy are kinda a nebulous thing. The whole "who is who`s vassal" thing is kinda... complicated.
What is that "Marina" in purple, if you don't mind me asking. I'm rereading right now and I don't think it was ever mentioned.
A plot hook for much later.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3vQj9ECtcU - theme music for that arc.
Marina is the token land dwelling of undersea civilization that is maintained as their point of trade and diplomacy with surface dwellers. At least, it USED to be, right now it`s walled off enclave that is even more stringent about "no outsiders permitted" then elves in Evergreens.
As in, elves will just put an arrow through interloper. Marina dwellers will capture them and torture the everloving f*ck out of them to find out "who sent them". They`re really paranoid f*cks out there. At least the head honchos are. They kinda have reasons for it. Very... un-good reasons, but reasons nonetheless.
Oh damn. This looks promising then. Well damn promising.
So, Portugal and Spain basically don't exist, and the Thousand Isles are in their place. Italy and Greece don't really exist, and neither do the Black or Caspian seas. Central Europe has become the Transbalkan, and the Endless Steppe appears to cover Ukraine, Poland, and a good chunk of Russia. The Middle East is now Pharos, and North Africa is the Sultanate.
What I'm actually the most curious about now, is does Scandinavia exist?
Not as a separate political entity, no. Keep in mind that Mittelzea actually extends all the way through the landmass that normally separates black and caspian seas. That pink and violet lands on the far right? That`s not-China and not-India respectively.
@Cytotoxin So is Pharos Eastern Rome, the Ottomans, Persia, or the Levant?
@Ranamga Not quite. Roman Empire had NEVER existed in this setting. Oija is what would happen if Carthage was allowed to grow unimpeded. Pharos is a cultural alliance of Levant, Persia and Turkey, who in absence of religious divisions united over a common love for profit.
@Cytotoxin How flat and low is the terrain of southern Pharos? Because I'm looking at that and going 'If it is at all possible to build a canal there, people will make it practical to do so'. Alyssa bringing steam power, the industrial revolution and industrialised magic into things just means it's not a 'Chinese Dynasty's personal project' scale project. Like the Great Wall or Thousand L8 Canal I think it's called...
@PyroHawk Not very. If you noticed the mountains to the northeast and southwest? The whole thing is simply one continuous mountain range that stretches from the subarctic past the equator and well into southern hemisphere. It is at it`s lowest in the area you were looking at, but it`s still very craggy and complicated terrain.
Channel is possible, but so far just doesn`t look like it would be worth the expense.
