Not you.

Not you.

Certainly not you.

Ezme sat on a worn out bench, drinking a smoothie out of a straw in the square of a metropolis on Earth, appraising the humans that walked by.

Since given the task of selecting the human which would become a champion, she had been jumping from city to city, looking for humans that would fit the criteria. Ezme had already found several that did fill the base requirements; however they didn't satisfy her personal ones.

After all, her father had privately addressed her telepathically and told her she would be acting as liaison between the champion and the rest of the angels. Despite the appearances she put up in front of her siblings, she wasn't unhappy with the arrangement.

After all, her Father knew the hearts of all his children. So he knew her secrets.

But why did Father want me to choose one from here? They don't even have mana in this world. If the champion is going to have to fight, then every advantage is going to count. And coming from a world with magic would have been a head start, as our divine powers operate in similar ways.

Ezme sighed contently as she finished her smoothie and threw it in the trashcan. She once again marvelled at the ingenuity of mortals. For anything she wanted, she could simply create out of thin air with her divine powers, even if those powers had limits, lacking authenticity for one. To Ezme, the small imperfections gave the smoothie character.

To mortals, who had no such powers - even those who possessed magical ones - they found other ways to make life convenient for themselves.

Every step of the way from collecting the fruits and berries, to the recipes created to come up with the tastes, down to the craftsmanship of the container and the straw the end result ends up in.

All those ideas and all that work done by so many different people, whom they would never meet. All so that one could experience the pleasure of drinking a delicious concoction in a plastic cup out of a straw.

And all with little to no effort required by the one who wishes to experience it. Simply walk up to the café or stand that has them, and give them a few coins. A process, which too, was getting ever simpler.

And that was only one of the mortals' outrageous creations. Truly ingenious.

Ezme stood up and put her hands in the pockets of her coat, another masterpiece of human ingenuity and cooperation, as she started walking through the city. Angels were not permitted to make themselves known to mortals in any world other than those that were part of their own domain. Unless the caretaker of the domain granted permission of course - however this world had none.

As such she had blended in by dressing in what seemed most appropriate for the local culture. Underneath her coat one could see a comfortable-looking sweater, jeans and untied sneakers. She hadn't figured out how humans tie their shoes. Buttons were easy enough to understand though. Ezme walked along the paved streets, subconsciously appraising the humans that passed her view as she sank into thought.

{"Go and select the mortal. And do not belittle your wings in my presence again."(God)}

Her Father's voice still echoed through her head. She didn't really dislike her wings, but her Father had to know that. She was more than anything, unhappy with herself.

All her siblings were proud - too proud in most cases in her opinion, with their way of looking down on mortals. And she knew she had to make the same appearances as them, if she didn't want to be looked down upon even further.

Always treated as the little sister without any talents. Every angel was more beautiful, wiser, smarter and stronger than her. She only excelled her siblings in one way. A way which was frowned upon.

{"You want to learn from the mortals? Foolish little sister, those lowly animals have nothing to teach you. You are better than them in every way, speaking of them with such admiration is to look down upon us! You are an angel, behave like one!"(????)}

Ezme had once opened up to the sister she looked up to the most. The most beautiful amongst the angels, and in Ezme's own opinion, the coolest. An ice queen if there ever was one.

Her words had hurt Ezme deeply, but she took her words to heart. From then on, she never spoke well of mortals again to her siblings, but despite how much she ranted about how lowly mortals were, it could never change how she felt. And no matter how much she spoke ill of mortals, it never changed the look in her sister's eyes that were filled with contempt for her.

And so she never stopped visiting the mortal realms in secret when she had the time. This time it wasn't in secret, so she was happy she had an excuse to waltz around the cities as she pleased. Her only regret was that she had to do this quickly. Ezme let out a sigh as she had passed hundreds of mortals, but none fit her criteria. The latest one too had gotten her hopes up for a moment.

She is happily married with two kids. I'm not heartless enough to tear a family apart like that, even for my own hopes and dreams.

Perhaps that was why Father chose me. Most likely. Had it been sister, she would have taken the first best choice, disregarding their personal circumstances completely.

Ezme continued walking with leisure through the streets and noticed she had gotten away from the more crowded areas. She rounded the next corner so she could get to a larger cluster of people. After all, time was of the essence - which called upon efficency.

Only a thousand years. It's a hopeless task, I already feel guilty for the fate of the person I choose. But at least I will give my all to give that person some comf- hold on.

Ezme stopped and looked at the young, black-haired woman who just passed her and stopped at the crosswalk, waiting for the light to turn green with another ingenious item in her hands. Ezme's appraisal of her looked promising.

Doesn't believe in god and/or views him with contempt - Check!
Would have no lingering attachments - Check!
Just my type - Check!

And is that...SH? Then she must also hold a desire to be reborn somewhere else! It's perfect!

Ezme was filled with excitement as she realized she had found a perfect candidate.

Let's ask her! All that's left is to convince her!

Ezme hurriedly walked towards the human and opened her lips as she got closer.

"Excuse m- UAH!"(Ezme)

In her haste, Ezme tripped on her untied shoestring, stumbling forward as she was falling.

Crap, I don't have my wings out!

However, as she had too much momentum, she ended up pushing the woman out into the street.

A moment later the duet between horn of the truck and the screeching tires could be heard, followed by a crash and ended by a thump.

No way...

Ezme stared, jaw gaping at the sequence of events before her until she stood up and brushed off her hands on the coat.

Guess that settles it. She'd probably get mad if I tell her I killed her by accident...right?
