Chapter 51 — Mana Recovery Medicine and Armor

"This is amazing! Why didn't you tell me earlier that there were things like this, Ars!"

"No, I wasn't asked about it so ... But this has nothing to do with blacksmithing, right?"

"What are you talking about? These magic mushrooms are often used as a catalyst."

"No, I didn't know that. You could have said it first."

"And there are so many of them ... Ars, this is a dream place for a blacksmith." (TLN: Remember how Gran had talked about being a 'creator'? Well, I'mma change that translation to 'blacksmith'.)

He isn't listening to me as usual.

Well, it is true that magic mushrooms could only be cultivated on a small scale at first, but now they have started to be cultivated on a fairly large scale and the amount that can be harvested is increasing.

Part of my walled land is designated as a space for growing magic mushrooms, and the number of logs that they are grown on is increasing.

Apparently, magic mushrooms could be harvested for several years after the fungus was planted in the log once.

The fungai have been steadily increasing in number for many years, and recently it has become more like an easy game because now I am cooperating with the lumberjacks so there is no shortage of logs for the fungai to infest.

"So, will you use these magical mushrooms for making weapons? I don't know how much of them will be used, but it's a problem if you use it too much."

"On the contrary, why is Ars storing so many magic mushrooms, desu?"

"I've stocked up on them because I wanted to replenish my mana before."

"So you were making Mana Recovery Medicine*? I didn't find any while staying here ..."

(TLN: I don't know what else to call it. Could you give me a suggestion in the comments? Mana Recovery Medicine just sounds a little off.)

"No, I don't know how to make that medicine. I used to put dried mushrooms in my mouth and chew on them, which replenished my mana"

"What the hell ... You did it in a horribly primitive way."

"It can't be helped. I can't make medicine, after all."

"If so, couldn't I make it, desu?"

"Eh? Can Gran-san make Mana Recovery Medicine?"

"It's not my specialty, but I know the basics, desu. After all, even if you want to use them as catalysts, it's more efficient to use them to make Mana Recovery Medicine."

"Well, then I'll ask that of you. Can I see you making it, too?"

"What are you talking about? Of course! Rather, I want Ars to help me with the production and feel the joy of making things."

No, in your case, if I need to 'help' you, it's like having a trauma planted into my mind.

I think Gran-san's skills are good.

This is because the hard fang sword that he made has a strange elegance to it.

Even though Gran-san had the tools to make it, it's not that easy to create something that radiates some elegance to it without at least decent skills.

Perhaps he did not acquire the skills by himself, but practiced somewhere properly.

"Well, okay. I took a little rest, so I can move a little again. I'm back in good spirits. Do you need to take some time to rest, Gran-san?"

"I can still keep making it. Come on, Kyle-kun. Quickly wake up."

"Arrrrg... everything's murky, I can't move anymore."

"Kyle doesn't have to overdo it, but if you want to take a break, come back here again afterwards. You can just look at where I'm working."

Apparently Gran also likes Kyle's help.

However, if Kyle overdoes it, he will break his body.

 Let's let him rest properly.

However, it's hard for me to be alone with Gran-san all the time.

After Kyle wakes up, let's have him come back here...

Just looking at Gran-san making the Medicine will be a learning experience for Kyle.

So I started working with Gran-san again.

 * * *

"Mana Recovery Medicine ... this looks like tea."

The image of the Medicine I had in my mind was like a potion or something.

However, the magic recovery medicine created with Gran-san was like tea.

But this tea is not an ordinary tea that uses tea leaves.

Mushrooms that look and taste like shiitake* are dried and roasted appropriately before being made into a fine powder.

(TLN: Shittake is a type of mushroom, as mentioned in a previous chapter a while back.)

The Mana Recovery Medicine can be made by dissolving the powder in warm water.

When I took a sip, it tasted like shiitake tea, which I drank only once in my previous life.

"Because I had made some good charcoal with Ars-kun first, I was able to generate a stable heat with a certain amount of firepower, so I was able to make high-quality Mana Recovery Medicine, desu."

"Will this be stored in powder form?"

"That's right."

"So, will this powder act as a catalyst when you're making weapons?"

"Oh, that's not the case. This time I'll be using it for armor, not weapons, desu."

"Armor?"

"That's right. It's not just the fangs that can be taken from the big boars. I am able to make leather armor from the fur of the big boars, too, desu."

"Oh, leather armor?"

"I'll use the Mana Recovery Medicine to tan the fur by keeping the fur soaked in it for a few days." (TLN: Not in the powder, but in the liquid form)

"Why do you need to use that medicine?"

"It is the same as when crafting a weapon. If I make it with a proper catalyst, the leather armor will have a magical effect rather than just being leather armor. However, it is not as effective as it is on a hard fang sword made from fangs. I'm sorry, but it will just be a leather armor with a bonus of certain degree of defense, desu."

"No, it's great enough. Even so, Gran-san can really make a lot of things."

"Hahaha, not really..."

He's humble while scratching his head, but it's actually amazing.

Gran's a little weird, but he's a very versatile person.

He must know more crafting techniques.

He would have been a better person in my mind if I hadn't been forced to work all night, every day.

However, I think that people who I've never seen in this village often might seem like eccentrics to me...

I was grateful for our encounter, and spent the nights for a few days working on other things again.

TLN: We don't really need a chapter summary for this... it's not that I'm lazy... truly that's not the case... hehehe....

Anyway, if you are here from Novel Updates, there's a Latest Chapter Discussion (LCD) that I've started in the forums. To get there, you can go to the contents page on NU for this novel, the page that has the links to these chapters.
