Chapter 154 - Mad Doctor

"Well, you're back, aren't you, Mosh-kun? Well, well, well. Welcome back, my comrade."

"Hello, Mimu. Your partner painter was wandering around the castle, so I brought him here. Next time, don't let him get away."

"Oh, I'm sorry about that but I've been working on a few details. I've been concentrating a lot on that, and it seems to have escaped me in the meantime."

"Be careful, even though you are very passionate about the development of medicine, your drawings are so bad that they are not worth seeing. It's not every day you get a partner painter of this caliber, Mimu."

"I know, Comrade Ars. Now, Mosh-kun, I'd like you to draw this part of the body. You can start right away."

"Hiiiiiia! Why are you guys so calm? Ugh, I'll do it. I'll paint it."

With Mosh, the painter from Barcan Castle, I came to a place called the Research Building.

We are building a research building in the southeastern section of the outer walls of Barcania, and these two are working there.

Along with churches, orphanages, and schools, we are planning to set up a research building and other university structures in this southeast district.

When we entered the research building, we were welcomed by a person who was Painter-san's partner.

 The person's name is Mimu.

To tell you the truth, it was because of this man that I decided to start my medical research.

Mimu is from a different territory than Fontana.

However, he did not leave his native land to come here by choice.

He was forced to do so by a certain incident.

The reason for this was the incident of him damaging his body.

In the land where he used to live, Mimu made a living as a doctor.

In this area, the bishops of the church and others can use Healing Magic.

However, not everyone can easily have access to the church's magic.

The cost of treatment is quite high, after all.

This is not because the church is profiteering, but because if they didn't set a certain high amount of money for the use of its' magic, there would be no end to the line of people outside, begging to be healed.

No matter how much mana a bishop has, there is no way he can keep using Healing Magic indefinitely.

In addition, a bishop who controls a large area can't just spend the whole day casting healing spells.

The price was set to prevent that.

That's why there are people like Mimu who treat people as doctors.

However, unlike the church's magic, each doctor uses his or her own experience to help people, so each doctor is different.

Mimu seemed to be one of the more popular doctors among them.

However, as he treated his patients every day, Mimu was troubled.

He wondered if what he was doing was really right or if there was a better way.

In the first place, how does the human body live, and how does it heal?

There was not a day that went by that he did not wonder about the wonders of the human body.

Finally, one day, an incident occurred: he was seen tearing up the body of a dead person in a sanitarium.

Even though he had been popular, the desecration of the dead was an unforgivable act.

In no time at all, the rumor spread, and not only did it create a bad reputation for him, but it also reached the ears of the lord.

With the powers that be on their radar, it was impossible to even live as before.

He had no choice but to close his clinic and leave the area.

However, the man in question did not feel bad about his actions.

He himself said that he could only think that the lump in the patient's abdomen was the cause of his death, and he needed to confirm it.

However, no one said, "Oh, yes, that's right," upon hearing such words.

Therefore, he had been wandering from place to place, moving from one territory to another.

"Well, this is a good place to be, my comrade. To have someone like you, who understands medicine, to be able to set up facilities like this, and even to be able to perform dissections. Isn't it truly lucky that I stumbled here?"

"....It's hell, no matter how you look at it."

"Did you say something, Mosh-kun?"

"No, not a word. So... Mimu-san, do you want me to draw a picture of this?"

"Oh, yes! Yes, yes, yes, please."

The reason why Mimu, who had been traveling from place to place, came here was that he heard about Kyle's magic.

He thought that if he had [Speed Reading] he might be able to read medical books more quickly and learn more.

 That's when he met me.

When I asked him to do some self-promotion, he started talking about himself at length, and as expected, everyone except me was turned off from the lengthy biography.

But I didn't really understand what he was trying to say.

When I heard that this world didn't even seem to have an image or a vague idea of the human anatomy, it became clear to me that there was no proper medicine in this world.

So, I gave him an appropriate response that was, "I understand, dissection is necessary," and Mimu was so impressed that he started calling me a comrade.

The only thing I regretted was that Kyle looked at me like I was some kind of freak.

"So, how are the anatomy diagrams coming along, Mimu?"

Yes, it's going well, comrade! So, once most of the dissections are done, what are you going to do next?"

"In the meantime, I'm having my craftsmen see if they can make a microscope. If we can make an optical microscope with lenses, we can go one step further."

"Optical microscope? What is that?"

"Simply put, it's a tool that can magnify small objects that are invisible to the naked eye. Well, I don't know the exact processes on how to make one, so I don't know if we'll ever finish it."

"I see. Maybe it's a technology from the East. I'm looking forward to seeing it in action!"

"Don't get your hopes up too high, Mimu. However, until the microscope is ready, you'll have to go through clinical trials. I'd like to know if each and every treatment that's actually being performed by doctors now is really effective or not. I want you to test them and give me the data."

"Oh, that's what my comrade was talking about before. I understand. I'm interested to see what kind of results I can get. Let's do it~!"

"Good luck, Mimu."

"Leave it to me. Let's master the art of medicine together, my comrade."

Mimu, the doctor, excitedly shook my hand and talked to me.

It is true that dissection is a necessary act for the development of medicine, as Mimu says.

However, there is also a certain danger.

Let's have the painter be a stopper so that Mimu doesn't end up doing anything and everything for the sake of medicine.

It would be better to use these two as a set from now on.

In this way, I decided to entrust Barca's medicine to these two opposites.

So, we introduce a new character. Mimu. However, is that really his name?

First of all, Mimu's name is written in Katakana. Here're the characters: ミーム

I kind of feel conflicted on what I should name Mimu... because his name would literally be Meme. The "ミ" character is mi. A hyphen can be used to make a sound more vowel-y. So, "ミー" is read like 'me'. The "ム" character is "mu". We now have Memu. And, because this is English and not Japanese, we would pronounce it as Memuh. Or, meme. But I don't know if I should do that... vote below.

Mimu or Meme for the character name?

should mimu be Meme or Mimu?
