Chapter 13

“Ge, it’s been a while now and we still haven’t seen him come out, did he ditched us already?”

“——Can’t be! This restaurant doesn’t have a back door and there’s two of us watching here, how can he leave?”

“Pffft!” An old man that walked besides them chuckled all of a sudden. The older kid frowned at the old man who promptly faked coughs and walked in rushed steps with neat and straight posture.

“Why does that man’s walking posture looked familliar?”

“You thought so too?”

The older kid scratches the tip of his nose. All of a sudden, his heart jumped in alarm. His eyes widened as he exclaimed at the other person: “Let’s chase——“

Zi Li felt even more proud of his own skill for disguise when he successfully passed through the two little demons. He can be seen walking through the stables selling horses in the market with heroic squared shoulders and large strides.

“——Don’t miss this once in a life time deal! Male horses! Female horses! Stallions! Neutered Horses! A lot of selections for you to pick! Everyone come and take a look——‘ A horse merchant was peddling with a loud scratchy voice.

“Hey! You there uncle, you look like your buying. Come, come, come and have a look, ” That shady guy walked towards Zi Li who was standing in front and pulled him by the shoulder to an extremely underweight and low-spirited horse, “take a look at this horse. Figure is slender and tall, sleek forehead and sharp eyes. Not only that, it can breed everyday, more offsprings will be produced guaranteed——“

Black lines streak across Zi Li’s face at this grey horse that was evidently been used to excessive mating: “The horse I want to is not this sort of type——“

“You’re not buying a stud horse? Then how about checking this neutered horse? Without its genitalia, it won’t be affected by the female horses’s oestrus anymore. Not only that, its four legs are well developed, great stamina, hardworking and can endure hardship. It can carry hundreds of various goods in its back——“

“Woah, woah, young man, I want to buy a mount, mount that can travel on the road? Not these kinds of horses!” Zi Li couldn’t endure anymore being splattered with saliva of this merchant bluffing about his merchandise so he cuts him off. He was about to turn around when his sleeves was grasped on firmly. At this point, Zi Li was once again reaching the boiling point of his temper.

I’m on the run right now! My time is running and unfortunately, I don’t have any to waste to deal with this annoying horse merchant!

Just as Zi Li was about to flare up, that shady young lad opens his mouth to talk again: “We are not selling mounts here in the market. If you want to buy one, there’s a horse ranch three li (1.5 km) outside the city.”

Hearing him say that made Zi Li really anxious. He went all that effort to reach this place because he thought he can get a horse good enough to outrun the soldiers the emperor may have dispatch to catch him. But now this peddler is telling him, that he can’t even get a single decent mount let alone a quality steed here?!

“——However, you sir are in great luck. A few days ago, it so happened that our boss brought back a young steed from the ranch. Although its just three years old and have a bit of a temper, but this one is the famous Hequ horse breed!”

After the merchant said so, Zi Li was strucked with an uplifting feeling of ‘after endless mountains and rivers that leave doubt whether there is a path out, suddenly one encounters the shade of a willow, bright flowers and a lovely village’. He gave the merchant a look as if saying ‘why didn’t you say so earlier’ and said: “Stop your nonesense! Quickly take me to the horse!”

After arriving to the stable, he did saw a juvenile Hequ horse hoarded inside. Zi Li had experienced riding a horse before and horse-riding is also his favorite hobby. He read a lot about it on the internet so of course he knew that this one is a Hequ horse, a breed that is famous in ancient times. The only thing he didn’t expect was finding such breed at this moment.

When that Hequ horse saw people coming nearer, it immediately spouts mucus from its nose as sign of warning. It’s clear black eyes was staring arrogantly yet somewhat afraid at them.

Since this is the first time Zi Li saw a reknowned horse, he carefully scrutinizes it. The horse’s head is big and long, the size of its nose is as big as a rabbit’s head, neck is thick and broad, and the width of its thorax is wide. It’s body is not yet fully developed but its almost as well built as an adult one!

“How much?”

“Hey, hey, it’s not too expensive, it’s only for two hundred!” The horse merchant knows that Zi Li is in urgent need of a mount so from the initial price, he demanded an exorbitant price.

The asking price is actually enough to buy an adult one. However, Zi Li is indeed in dire need of a mount and he cannot tarry any longer. It’s already noon and that perverted emperor may have already found out that he escape so Zi Li grinded his teeth and was forced to say: “Ok, it’s a deal!”

Watching the transaction happening before its eyes, the horse neighed in displeased and stomps randomly with its hooves. Upon seeing this, Zi Li gently and cautiously went near to it, black sincere eyes locked gaze with the others’ big round and same black eyes. He softly said soothingly: “Good boy, don’t be afraid, I won’t hurt you.”

It quieted down as if it understands his words. Zi Li was overjoyed, he slowly reaches his hands out to touch its forehead. It stood still and let Zi Li pet it like an obedient child.

The horse merchant exclaimed in wonder: “Sir, do you train horses? No one could usually get within five foot near it, don’t even talk about petting it!”

Zi Li felt more complacent hearing this. He was barely immersing himself to the complement, when the Hequ horse suddenly turn its head and chomped Zi Li’s hand.

“AHHH!—–” Zi Li screamed loudly. He was pulling his hand back in panic yet he couldn’t take it out. He could only shed tears and looked at the horse with miserable begging eyes.

If Zi Li wasn’t mistaken, he swear he just saw the gleam in its proud eyes mock him and only then did it open its mouth.

Zi Li pulled his hands out at once. He saw his hands intact but completely drenced in saliva. He glared at the haughty Hequ horse once he recovered.
