The Soleans and their two cousin races possess some of the most effective and unique armor in the known universe. This highly effective armor also played into the early Solean mentality to dismiss shields as a viable defensive mechanism. It didn’t help that they were also quite talented at defeating energy shields. Another factor that played into that dismissal of energy shielding and perhaps the most important was their reliance on stealth technology. All Solean ships of that era possessed cloaking technology, and the Soleans were very good with cloaking technology. Most races could fire torpedoes while cloaked, but the Soleans were also able to fire their energy weapons without disrupting their cloak. This led to a tendency for them to engage opponents while cloaked during that era.
This tendency also meant they couldn’t really use shields. Cloaks and shields were fundamentally incompatible. This meant that if an opponent could see through their cloak, and they were hit, it would be their armor that absorbed the hit. As such good armor was very important to the Solean people.
Now then you may be wondering what makes Solean armor so special? The answer is in how it operates.
The armor itself is a multilayered construct of floating plates and shock absorbing gel integrated with advanced circuitry. This circuitry allows an energy field to be run through the plating, a field that drastically strengthens the integrity of the armor, and also absorbs some of the energy directed at the hull. In addition, a number of special devices called energy absorbers are embedded in the plates. They absorb some of the energy from incoming weapons fire and shunt that energy directly into the Armor Integrity Field often shortened to the AIF. Those factors alone make their armor very impressive, but in addition to that a dispersion field is also projected around the hull. This field acts on incoming weapons fire and attempts to disperse it. Concentrated energy bolts traveling through the field often end up hitting the hull in a much wider area than they would have otherwise, because of this field.
Forcing incoming fire to hit a wider area has the benefit of not only weakening the penetrating force of incoming energy bolts but also allowing more energy to be absorbed by the energy absorbers and the AIF field. This makes the armor very effective at stopping energy weapons fire, especially pulsed energy weapons.
Projectile weapons can bypass the dispersion field. However that is where the shock gel layer comes into play. When a kinetic impact hits the plating, the energy of that impact is dispersed through the gel over the surface of the hull. Thereby allowing more absorbers to act on the impact than if the gel wasn’t present. The gel also absorbs a significant chunk of the impact on its own.
The same deal happens with the explosive burst of a missile or torpedo. The energy of the shockwaves would be absorbed and dispersed by the combination of the gel and absorbers. While the AIF ensures the hull maintains integrity and even absorbs a chunk of the blast itself.
As such Solean armor is highly resilient and able to withstand phenomenal amounts of weapons fire before failing.
but would it survive a kinetic weapon going at FTL speeds?
yes, its virtually immune to kinetic impact. The shock gel, and absorbers deal with the kinetic shock, while the AIF hardens to plates to the point that even translight projectiles can't penetrate the armor. Solean vessels typically don't include navigational deflectors in their design because their armor renders them unnecessary. A factor that aides with their stealth profile. A sensitive enough FTL scanner could pick up a running deflector's energy signature. The armor is much harder to detect.
If you wanted to get through the plate, I would recommend using either an energy weapon or torpedoes. Both have a much better chance of penetrating the armor, than kinetic rounds. Although that isn't to say a kinetic round can't get through. Get one going fast enough with enough energy behind it, and it will get through.
@JCountry I see so the gel could be considered a type of non-Newtonian fluid... probably programmable so that it can stay on the ship... in my hypothetical case, I meant it as both ships knew each other positions and were at relatively short range... and to give the ramming ship the best chances lets make it a medium-size ship lets take a... frigate or corvette ... maybe a fast Battlecruiser designed with a enfaces on firepower, speed, and frontal armor and shields against a battleship or dreadnought class ship.
my question then is... considering the scene in the movie of star wars...mm was it on rogue one? Were that small ship went FTL on the massive one and wrecked it as a reference... how would a Solean ship fare to that type of offensive maneuver?
@Nemesis_nc I'll ignore everything wrong with that maneuver in Crapney Wars. To answer the question, it would not work.
Solean ships have Ftl dampers, meant to disrupt Ftl drives in proximity. We saw them earlier, when Megumi blocked the Neku retreat.
Now assuming those were offline for some reason and given the mass of the ships in question. The damage would be light and that is assuming the ramming vessel was moving at high translight and the Solean ship's shields were down.
@JCountry *impressed whistle* that's one tough nut to crack... ñe whatever it was to get a better idea on how strong the armor is...
also... that opinion on "Crapney Wars" I'm inclined to think that comes from the moment the stupid mouse bought it? ñe doesn't matter I also don't really like the newer moves...(haven't really seen them) they kind of lost their soul...
well I'll see you around I won't leave you any cookies as I already know you don't like the ones I bring so see ya
@Nemesis_nc yep, everything the mouse added is bad. It doesn't get better either but worse
my great doubt the Neku race was not part of the terran race? split from the terran race in the year 2559 during the big war that destroyed the earth?? If so, what happened to the other race that lived with humans? The Dogys race perished during the war? Or did they escape from earth prophesying that say his goddess Laika would guide them to a new world?? and they would found their great empire in the star called KAN Mayor.
@Dreckons ????? Um, where did this come from?
@JCountry that's obvious from the anime Asobi_Ni haha and also from other old novels from the 90's xD
both the race of cat girls and dog girls are races created by genetic manipulation in humans but after humans treat them as pets, slaves or toys; in many novels the context changes, but in the end they decide to escape from earth.
@Dreckons I see.
Well there are a few problems with connecting that with my timelines. The Neku have no connection to humanity. The year 2559 however would be an odd year for such a split, if they did. In that year the early Soleans were no longer in our galaxy, and the Terrans were in the middle of their clan wars. If you translate that to the Solean calendar, the year becomes 374 SDE. Earth had already been destroyed in a big war, the Cathamari war, and that was nearly four centuries prior.
@JCountry all this made me want to play with gallente in eve echo.
@Dreckons Hmm???
@JCountry Material strength is meaningless at velocities that approach c since the forces that constitute that strength, such as atomic bonds, is causal at c. At high enough percentages of c, most of the impacting projectile’s atoms and the target’s atoms would pass through each other’s volume without noticeably interacting until enough atomic nuclei struck each other to trigger fusion events to absorb enough kinetic energy to slow down enough to interact ( fusion events over the atomic weight of iron are net negative energy events ) and release the rest of the kinetic energy, but that potential moment would occur long after the projectile has perforated both sides of a ship and carrying of most of the kinetic energy.
@AKnightSky Not entirely meaningless, but I never said anything about relying on pure material strength. I said the energy field hardens the material, but the field itself is in and of itself technically one more factor that can absorb the impact. Its a layered defense, that weakens the impact, and uses the energy of the impact as part of the force that negates it.
@JCountry check the wiki gallentes weapons of eve online basically they are kinetic weapons accelerated by electrisity or plasma; really in the game you can overload them to accelerate their rate of fire but after they overheat too much the weapons explode they cause damage to the ship and you can not use them until you repair them or replace them with new ones. also the gallente ships specialize in armor and drones there are even nanites that increase the repair of the armor.
@Dreckons Not entirely sure why you posted this. This conversation thread hasn't really been about the weapons. Rather its about a type of futuristic super armor. A super armor that uses an energy field to harden material beyond natural limits, combined with absorbers, and a powerful shock gel to help dissipate the energy of an impact. It can stop some fairly fast moving rounds, but a large round at a high enough velocity might get through. The armor would still absorb a lot of the energy of the round though, reducing its effect.
Honestly, I am strongly in the camp that kinetic weapons aren't a prime choice for your starships. They have their niche, namely long-range strikes against slow-moving targets. However, against energy shields? Utterly useless, their impact on such devices negligible. In addition kinetic rounds are relatively slow moving, which doesn't help their effective range against fast agile targets. Worse, they are rather expensive weapons to maintain logistically. The bigger they are the worse that gets logistically.
@JCountry exactly for this mention eve online it seems that you have never played it.
Gallentes reinforce their armor by diverting energy to the armor and it is difficult to manage the energy between repair and reinforcement since you also have to manage the type of damage that your enemy is producing. (thermal, explosive, kinetic or energetic)
As soon as the shield is wrong, Eve's Minmatar faction demonstrates it. They use literal cannons, they are not railguns, they are machine guns and heavy cannons, the difference is that they use bullets and specialized ammunition to pierce shields and armor materials, and even damage enemy weapons and engines or pierce the structure internal bypassing all the regeneration and repair of defenses, in addition to that to correct the accuracy of their weapons they use painting (lasers or radioactive markers) in addition to specializing in sabotaging enemy thrusters or warp engines to improve precision of their weapons and prevent them from escaping.
@Dreckons Of course, I've never played the game. Its not exactly the kind of game I can get into. I avoid MMOs because of their multiplayer only aspect. That aspect means a pause function doesn't exist, and since my life is full of constant interruptions, I can't really play those kinds of games.
