Belgian Trivia

Zwaantjes: In Flemish, we call police officers on motorbikes “Zwaantjes” which translates to “little Swans” or just “swans”. This stems from the time when they all used to have the same license plate “22” which looks like two little swans. Because of that it also used to be slang in certain circles to call the cops “22” in Belgian French. I have no idea if people still do that though.

The six of us were being driven together in a big white limousine toward the royal palace. We were followed by a few cars of close friends and family that were also allowed to join us at the palace.  Mia’s warning hadn’t been in vain. It wasn’t only the Avenue de Parc Royal that had been blocked, but at regular intervals, the roads were diverted because the people had arranged for big screens on marketplaces to watch the wedding together because it would be broadcast live on national television.

The biggest mistake our driver made was passing the Heizel and the Atomium. He wanted to take us via the scenic route for the occasion, but a lot of people had gathered near the large bronze statue of the yuri Jeanne D’Arc they had placed at the foot of it. I always felt incredibly embarrassed when I had to pass a statue of myself.

When those people realized who was in the limousine, they surrounded us and walked with us, forcing us to go at a snail’s pace. When we were still in that same square after twenty minutes, I knew we would most likely be late. I sincerely hoped Anna and the others weren’t facing similar troubles.

Luckily for us at one point 2 swans arrived to clear the traffic for us. When I took a closer look, I could see that they were palace guards. Trixy must have sent them to help us.

After that we drove toward the palace with an escort and traffic lights were even changed to let us pass.

“I could get used to that kind of treatment,” Elsa said. “Absolutely!” Therese agreed. “It could even become enjoyable to drive around in Brussels like that,” Mia said. Fien stayed quiet. I think she was more nervous than the rest of us. It always surprised me to see that instead of the usual excited Fien, we got to see a timid quiet Fien when she was really nervous. It was the best way to gauge if something was seriously affecting her. I gave her a little shoulder pat and asked if she was alright. She looked at me a bit surprised, showed me a bright smile, and said “Just a little nervous.”

That honest smile was enough to let me know she would be fine. I remembered the first time we met when she just talked nonstop about all the yuri she had read. Fien had sure grown over the years and had become an impressive, beautiful lady.

The Avenue de Parc Royal was an amazing sight to behold. Literally, thousands of people had gathered here holding signs of support for our wedding. Even though I did not know these people I did feel a little emotional from this sight. It was a good feeling that so many people came outside to celebrate our big day with us.

When we arrived at the palace and the gates opened, I could see that all of us were tense. Not only were we about to get married, but this would also be the first time any of us entered the palace. You could only visit the botanical garden of the palace once a year, but the main part of the palace was always closed to the public, so this would really be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most of us.

We drove through the palace estate, and I noticed an identical ar as ours was already parked in front of the main entrance. I felt relieved to know that the others had already made it.

I felt antsy all over. This was really it. The day we had all been looking forward to for all these years. I could see the other girls were feeling the exact same way.

The driver opened the car door, and I was the first one to emerge. I looked toward the other car and noticed that Anna stepped out of the car at the exact same time as me.

Her beautiful dark hair fell beautifully on the exposed skin on her back and shoulders. Her white silk dress was very elegant, and the long embroiled white see-through gloves added a hint of mystery to her. The second our eyes met; I knew my eyes made a photograph for my memory to remember this very moment for the rest of my life.

We walked slowly toward each other, and she offered me her arm, which I gladly accepted.

I looked at the other couples. We had formed a row and they were all standing arm in arm. Even though they all looked beautiful, none of them could compare to Anna. By the look of the smiles on everyone’s faces, my guess was that everyone was having similar thoughts.

While we entered the palace and were led through the large hallways, I took a closer look at the other couples. As usual, Thea had done an outstanding job with the dresses. Everyone fitted so perfectly together.

Tina was wearing a dark purple suit which might have looked a little plain if she was by herself, but with Elsa next to her, it looked just perfect. She had a golden flower accentuating her purple hair. Later I found out that that flower had been the first gift she had ever gotten from Elsa on their very first date. That little fact had really touched me when I heard it. Tina was a lot more of a romantic than I gave her credit for.

The biggest contrast could be seen between Mia and Valerie. I was surprised by how feminine Valerie looked. She looked almost fragile in her Cinderella-type wedding gown with her hair down.  Next to Mia’s suit, it looked like Mia was protecting Valerie. You would never guess that Valerie was the black belt head of security out of those two.

Elodie was dressed in almost the same dress as Gazette’s, but her dress was accentuated with pastel pink instead of the blue on Gazette’s dress. Her blonde hair was done in a braided ponytail, just like when they first met. It had been years since I saw her with that look. They both beamed with happiness. I was happy that we were able to make this marriage happen for them. They were the ones benefitting the most from Trixy’s generosity today.

Eve had stayed true to her tomboyish public image and wore a black and white female tuxedo that was cut out in an arty way. Even though it was a tight suit, the arms and legs gave an oversized impression at the ends. It was a stylish look that fit her perfectly.  Her short green hair made her look like she was on top of things. Even though it was a strong contrast with Therese's dress somehow she fitted perfectly next to her cute pink-haired Therese.

It was amazingly cute how shy Fien and Maura had become the second they saw each other in their wedding dresses. They had remained cute to watch like that even after 10 years. Maura’s gawn was a lot less prominent than Fien’s, but at the same time, it made it easier for them to walk closely together. Maura’s dress was accentuated with beautiful jewelry. Seeing them like that reminded me of how they used to be at first. Sitting shyly together with Pussyni on their lap. Seeing these two beautiful ladies sure showed me how much time had passed.

The door in front of us was opened for us and we were led into the large throne hall. Where chairs had been prepared for all the guests. Trixy sat on her throne at the end of the hall, and they had prepared a red carpet for us to walk up to her.

Trixy smiled broadly at us, as she welcomed us like old friends. Completely not as stately as you would have expected this ceremonial occasion to be.

When all the guests sat down, Trixy’s demeanor changed and suddenly she was exuding leadership. She was not just an old acquaintance now. She was projecting her leadership as the queen of our country when she started her speech.

“We have gathered here today for a happy occasion, a wedding of six of the most known couples of our country, but before I will proceed with the ceremonial part that is of course part of a wedding, there is another ceremonial matter I wish to attend to.”

Next, she proceeded to call Aunt Bernie and Ms. Odes to the front too and asked us all to kneel.

Then she took out a rapier and from left to right she knighted each and every one of us, one by one with the words. “For exemplary services to our country, I knight you.”

I could see that Aunt Bernie was crying. She was clearly not expecting this honor. Charismatic as she was, I learned over the years that she started to cry rather easily when she got thanked or was honored.

After Trixy finished knighting all of us, she whispered loud for us to hear, but not loud enough for the crowd to make up what she had said “After seeing all Annya’s puns naming all your yuri organizations, I wanted to join in on the fun, and from now on you will be my knights of the yuri table.

Several of us snickered at her pun, Anna’s cheeks turned completely red. Now that the knighting ceremony was over, Ms. Odes and Aunt Bernie went back to their seats.

Trixy promptly started acting like the leader of our nation again and proceeded with the wedding ceremony.

Even though there were six couples, she took the time to say something personal to every couple. She started out with the couple that would not be able to get married without her and asked, “Are your mothers still happily married?” I am pretty sure she knew the answer to that question before asking it, but the fact that the queen was so friendly toward them, seemed to calm Elodie and Gazette down, they nodded with big smiles on their faces. “Well, you both look beautiful, it will be my honor to perform your wedding service.”

Then she went through the ceremony with them and when we heard them both say I do, loud applause went through the crowd.

Trixy went through similar proceedings with all the couples but intentionally kept Anna and me as last.

When it was finally our turn, she said “Rest assured, tonight I won’t steal your dance partner at the wedding party.”

A few of the other girls snickered at her remark, but I wasn’t laughing. I knew she was only speaking in jest, but did she really need to bring back those memories? Due to the whole setting, I was just starting to forgive her for that…

Trixy went through all the steps with us and after we both said, “I do.” Trixy said, “I present to you, the six newest married couples in Belgium!”

Loud applause roared through the hall; we could even hear cheers from outside the palace.

“You can now all kiss your brides.”

Even though I had kissed Anna many times, the feelings that we shared with this kiss were special. We were the same, and yet we weren’t. Our lives were now locked together for better or for worse until death do us part, and we were wearing a ring that was proof of this bond.

yuri marriage

When we got back out of the castle, we were greeted by the broadcasting crew that had filmed the entire wedding. They looked at us hopefully, so I said, “One question and one question only. As you might be able to deduce, we have plans for today.”

The team snickered at my little joke and the interviewer thought about what to ask before saying “Today, you have written history once again by letting the queen perform a gay marriage. What will be next?”

Ah, an opportunity presented itself just like that. Now I could make the first step for Trixy’s case without making it obvious that I was a secret yuri agent.

“Next we will have to witness the first married royal yuri couple. So that we know this change isn’t just for show. I wonder if any of them will be brave enough to follow through.”

Nobles usually get riled up when you question their braveness. I hoped this would at least give Trixy the momentum she needed when she went to ask for Emilia’s hand at the Dutch court.

Later that night at the wedding party at the Lyst estate, princess Emilia came to thank me for what I did. I feigned ignorance of course, but she told me that she would remember to who she owed this favor.

Anna asked me what she was talking about, but instead of answering I held my hand out to her and spoke the words

“Tonight, I am not letting anyone else dance with you. Tonight, I get to show the world that you are all mine.”

Anna gulped and answered, “Lead the way, my dearest wife, I’ll be in your care.”
