Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha and Co.

When the month of July rolled around, and Inuyasha was still giving her the silent treatment, Kagome decided that that enough was enough. It was time for them to have a heart to heart. That was why she was currently in a vacant classroom, glaring up at a pensive looking half-demon.

“We need to talk.” She demanded hands moving to her hips and a foot slapping rapidly against the floor.

His arms clasped over his chest in agitation as he coolly replied with a shrug. “What’s there to talk about?” The tick in his chiseled jaw moving a mile a minute while glancing shrewdly at the exit.

A frustrated sigh escaped the small teen as her manicured hands left her hips and agitatedly waved in the air. “There is plenty to talk about, Inuyasha.” Yeah, like how he has been a gigantic asshat for several weeks.

The hanyō’s icy gaze quickly returned to her agitated form. His next response knocked Kagome off-balance and caused her to temporarily abandon the exasperation. “Why him?” he asked, his arms unlocking to thrust a hand roughly through his silver tresses.

“What do you mean?” The frowning woman questioned, eyeing her friend as his cold features suddenly melted, and his fluffy ears pressed against his skull.

He shoved another clawed hand through his glossy hair while his golden eyes peered down at her pleadingly. “Why did you choose him?” whined Inuyasha, seamlessly stepping closer as he carried on. “What does he have that I don’t?”

A rush of guilt washed over the teen, head bowing to stare at her twisting fingers. Kagome realized that the yōkai was emotionally wounded by not choosing him, but one could not help what the heart demands. She tried expressing in plain words her feelings for his older brother. “We connect in a way that I have never experienced with anyone else.” Softly explained Kagome, still eyeing the busy digits. It was true. She never felt anything like what she felt for Sesshōmaru. Being with the inuyōkai was as natural as breathing.

“A bloody connection!” Inuyasha’s abrupt reaction caused Kagome’s head to shoot up and jump slightly. “We have that too. Don’t you feel it? It’s always been there.” He desperately said, taking another step forward.

They did have a connection of sorts, but it wasn’t what the yōkai was hoping for. It was platonic and would under no circumstances be anything more than that. “Inuyasha-“ she began only to be cut off when he pulled her slight form against his hard chest and kissed her soundly.

Kagome's body stiffened as his lips continued to glide over hers. A flash of silver caught the teen's peripheral, causing her to shove the half-demon away and turned to the open doorway where a blank-faced Sesshōmaru stood. She opened her mouth to respond when the inuyōkai swiftly turned around and left the pair.

Jerking around, she glared up at Inuyasha, screaming furiously and pounding her palms against his chest. “What the hell?! I’m sorry, Inuyasha, but I don’t feel the same way as I do for Sesshōmaru. He is the one I want to be with. Please respect my choice!” Snarled the young woman finally putting her foot down and setting the hanyō straight.

The sudden comprehension that this whole incident could end her budding relationship had the teen’s anger swiftly moving into a full-blown panic. “Shit. I got to go.” She said, turning away from the half-demon and hurrying out of the room.

“Maru, wait!” Kagome yelled, quickly catching up with the silent demon and snagging his sleeve. “Please give me a minute to explain.” She begged, praying to the gods that he would listen.

His long fingers wrapped around her dainty wrist and easily dragged her into a darkened alcove. “One minute.” He coolly stated, his jaw clenching rapidly, indicating he was indeed furious.

A relieved sigh unknowingly escaped the teen and was thankful he was willing to hear her out. Kagome then hurried to explain what he had witnessed minutes ago. “It’s not what you think. I went to talk to Inuyasha about how he has been behaving, and he kissed me.”

“Yet, you did nothing to stop it.” He said dryly, his hands clenching as he spoke.

What was he getting at? Did he think she wanted to kiss Inuyasha? This was so not her fault, nor did she kiss his brother. Kagome couldn’t help but feel irritated at her boyfriend for insinuating such a thing. “I was surprised and caught off guard. If you had seen past your anger, then you would have noticed how uncomfortable I had been. It was not him that I wanted to kiss!” she snapped irritably and stamped her feet.

“Hn.” Replied the yōkai clearly still mad at what he had witnessed.

Her boyfriend's snarky reaction naturally caused the waspish teen to bark harshly at him. “Cut the shit. It’s you, damn it! It’s always been you!” She said, jabbing a finger into his chest and carrying on, “You’re my choice and the man that I love. I only want to be with you!”

Sesshōmaru grabbed at her wrist once more and pulled her flush against him. “Prove it then.” He declared, peering down at her with molten gold.

“Fine, I will.” Tossed out the tiny woman quickly. She wasn’t sure how she was going to do that, but she would so her boyfriend knew she was serious about them and their relationship.

“Be my mate.” He announced without batting an eye.

Her mouth dropped in shock, surprised by his sudden request. ‘He wants me to be his mate.’ Kagome thought, staring at the demon nervously. Wasn’t that like getting married in yōkai society? Weren’t they too young? Plus, they just reconnected, and wouldn’t that seem like they were rushing into things.

Noting the flustered expression of his girlfriend, Sesshōmaru reached up to smooth the furrow of her brow as he began explaining. “We don’t have to do it right now, but as soon as we are out of school. Think of it more as a betrothal.”

His explanation soothed her raging nerves and seemed rather sensible. It is over a year and several months away and would be enough time for them to strengthen their relationship before mating. “So, you’re basically asking me to marry you?” She shyly asked lashes fluttering as she gazed up at him.

A pale digit lightly brushed across her cheek while he bent forward. “Would you be opposed?” He softly questioned, his breath ghosting her lips.

“No…” She heard herself whisper, not even having to think about it.

Sesshōmaru’s golden gaze warmed immensely at her quick response before he closed the distance and kissed her senseless, making his chosen female forget about the incident with his half-brother.

For the rest of the day, Kagome had been in a happy daze, barely paying attention to any of her studies. It took all the willpower she had not to spill to her best friend as they took the bus home. Presently she sat at the coffee table doing homework while Malakai placidly sat on the floor. She could tell it was almost time to put him to bed since he was no longer paying any attention to either his toys or the cartoons playing on the television. Occasionally, he’d rubbed at his eyes while yawning.

The glowing sun was sinking into the horizon as Kagome began chewing thoughtfully on the end of the pen in hand. Her mind moved swiftly from the sleepy toddler to his missing father. It was getting relatively late, and Sesshōmaru had yet to show. He was supposed to have come after cram school. She couldn’t help but worry.

Since the memorable weekend in Mito and the fierce fight with Inuyasha, the tension in the Tatakau residence had risen to an all-time high. It was only a matter of time before it all bubbled over. That was why he was practically at her place more than at his. He only went back to the house late at night to shower and sleep.

Glancing at the clock, Kagome sighed, setting down the pen and snapping the textbook shut. She rose from the floor and went to the droopy-eyed toddler to collect him for bed. “Come on, baby.” She softly cooed, gently caressing his back as he propped his head on her shoulder.

By the time she reached his bedroom, Malakai’s tiny snores echoed in her ear, indicating that he was out cold. Kagome laid him carefully in his crib, covering his chubby form and leaning in to kiss his forehead. She quietly turned around to sneak out of the room and jumped in surprise when she spotted her boyfriend standing in the doorway.

His brow dipped in disappointment as he came forward. “He is already asleep.” Whispered the yōkai gripping the bar and peering into the crib to watch his son peacefully sleep.

It was more of an observation than a question, but Kagome answered it anyway. “Yeah, he crashed as soon as we hit the stairs.”

A muscular arm encircled her waist, drawing her in so that their sides touched as he sighed heavily. "It was never my intention to be late," said the yōkai, tenderly kissing her temple.

She carefully turned in his hold, burrowing into the added warmth and shrugging as she spoke. “It’s okay. Things come up. Malakai will be happy to see you tomorrow.” It was true. The demon would be there in the morning, as usual, to have breakfast with Kai Kai. Kagome knew Sesshōmaru didn’t want to miss any more time with their son, so she could genuinely understand why he was saddened by the missed opportunity.

“As will I.” The inuyōkai responded with another affectionate kiss before explaining what had hindered him from coming sooner. “I had to make a stop at home after cram and got stopped by my father.” He didn’t sound thrilled when he mentioned his sire.

“What did he want?” She softly asked, keeping her voice down as to not wake the sleeping toddler.

The yōkai’s flawless face warped into an annoyed sneer as he spat out the words. “He wanted to discuss arranging a dinner with a friend of the family and their daughter.”

That sounded a heck of a lot like a setup. The anxious thought caused the petite female’s stomach to twist violently and throat to tighten. “Why did he want to do that?” She forced out, not sure if she genuinely wanted to know or not.

“He believed the daughter, and I would make a good match.” He scoffed drily.

“Oh…” It was just as she had previously thought. Stomach wrenching some more, her mouth went dry, making it difficult to swallow. “So...” She trailed off, blue eyes adverting to the cotton button-up while her jeweled fingers picked at the fabric of his sleeve before softly continuing. “are you going to?”

“Why would I want to go?” inquired the demon scoffing yet again.

His affronted response caused her head to shoot up, staring at him wide-eyed while stumbling over her words. “Well…I just thought…”

A reassuring hand came up to cup her rosy cheek and gently stroked the warmed skin as his gaze softened even though his tone was heavy with contempt. “You thought what? That I would go along with that ridiculous setup simply because my father deems it a suitable match.”

Kagome didn’t take offense at the harshness of his reply; instead, it made the swirling in her belly cease. She knew his disdain wasn’t directed towards her but the situation itself. “What did you say to him?” She asked, curious to know what her boyfriend’s response had been to his father’s attempt at matchmaking.

“I told him I was not interested and did not appreciate him trying to tell me who he thinks I should be with.” Stated Sesshōmaru smiling as he continued. “I also informed him that I wanted to focus on my schooling before settling down.”

“So, you lied.” Retorted the small teen brows disappearing into her bangs.

His pleasant smile slightly dimmed while lightly tugging her body closer. “I did not lie. I skated the truth. Our relationship is none of his concern. I do not want him involved.”

Hurt flashed across her big blue eyes, and a frown marred her delicate features as she whispered. “Would it be so bad if he did know about us?”

A tired sigh escaped while he leaned in to kiss her raven locks before pulling away to peer down at her. “If he were to know, then he would demand we mate as soon as possible, and we have both decided that we will do it on our own time.” He gently explained, his hand coming back up to tenderly caress her cheek while trying to get his distressed girlfriend to see his side of things. “I do not want him messing with our relationship, especially when we have come so far.”

Oh...that made sense. They didn’t want or need anyone butting into their budding relationship, especially someone who would try to order them on how to live. If that was what Sesshōmaru believed his father would do, then she would go along with it. After all, he grew up with the elder inuyōkai and knew him better than she. “What did he say after that?” Kagome questioned even more curious about how his father had handled the situation.

“He said I was being unreasonable and could not understand why I insisted on defying him at every step.” Amusement danced in the yōkai’s eyes as he recounted the moment. “I said I wasn’t defying anyone and that my life and decisions were mine alone.”

She could imagine that his father wasn’t too happy with his eldest son after the snarky reply. “I’m sure he wasn’t too thrilled about that.”

A snort resounded within the room, and his silver hair swung about as he softly chuckled. “No. He told me I was more like my mother each day.”

Kagome was genuinely surprised that Mr. Tatakau even mentioned his deceased ex-wife. From what she knew, the past Mrs. Tatakau was a sore subject in the family homestead. It was odd to see her boyfriend, not as angry as she expected because of this. “What did you say?” sought the teen staring up at him with cautious baby blues.

“I said, then mother would be proud.” He smugly stated, the brilliant white of his teeth flashing as his shoulders shrugged. “I left after that and came straight here.”

Her brows dipped lowly, concerned that her boyfriend was acting little to cool about the confrontation with his father. “Are you okay?” She asked, fingers playing once again with his sleeve.

He lightly placed a kiss on her lips before soothing the worry. “Yes.” The inuyōkai stated, sighing wearily with a slight shrug before carrying on. “The topic of my disobedience is nothing new between my father and me."

The issue with his obedience or lack thereof seemed to be a frequent occurrence in the Tatakau household from what Kagome could understand. It was no surprise that he would want to spend more time with them than at home. Her thoughts wandered from her boyfriend’s complicated relationship with his sire to whether he had been able to attain something to eat before or after cram. “Have you eaten anything?” She asked, dropping the uncomfortable subject of the confrontation and his sire.

A frown furrowed his noble brow as the yōkai thought on her question. Sesshōmaru was surprised to realize he had not consumed any substance since lunch and was feeling rather peckish. “I have not.” He admitted, stomach rumbling in tandem as he spoke.

It was a good thing that Mama had made extra just for Sesshōmaru. Kagome found it amusing that her mother had taken her boyfriend underneath her wing and went out of her way to spoil him whenever the opportunity arose. “Then come on, Mama made Yasai Itame tonight.” She said, wriggling out of his hold and carefully dragging the yōkai out of the room. “Don’t give me that look. It has sausages with it, so you get your meat, you carnivore.” Snorted the young woman rolling her expressive gaze to the side as she pulled him down the hallway.

“Is that so?” commented the willing dog demon, his lips twitching as her head whipped up to eye him with a light huff.

“Yes,” She primly noted. “Now sit.” The teen promptly said when they entered the kitchen. She lightly shoved him towards the empty table before hurrying to the refrigerator to pull out the leftovers. It didn’t take her that long to reheat the plated food and slide it in front of him.

Sesshōmaru eyed the stir-fried vegetables and sausage for a few seconds before digging his chopsticks into the full plate. He emitted a low moan of pleasure as the bits of the flavorful sauce tickled his sensitive taste buds.

The uncharacteristic action caused Kagome to giggle silently into the palm of her hand. The way he was eating was much like Inuyasha, not that the teen would tell him that. He would not find that funny in the slightest. She swallowed the amusement, her hand falling away so that she could speak. “It’s good, right?” she happily asked the hungry yōkai, smiling widening when he shook his head in agreement.

“Your mother knows her way around a wok.” proclaimed the inuyōkai between bites.

“I know I wish I could cook like that.” She said with a sigh. “Are you thirsty?” Inquired the teen, leaving the table to peer into the refrigerator to see what they had. “We have melon soda, cold barley tea, or water.” She quickly threw out the few options over a shoulder, patiently waiting for a response.

“Water is fine.” He replied already halfway through with the mound of food.

Coming back to the table, she passed him the water and plopped in the seat on the other side to wait for him to finish eating. It wasn’t long before Sesshōmaru was done, and Kagome was carrying the soiled dish and chopsticks to the sink to wash them quickly.

“It's only eight-thirty," Kagome said, gaze flicking from the clock to the demon beside her as she rinsed off the soapy plate. "You want to watch a movie or a show?” She curiously proposed while handing him the wet dish to towel dry.

“Sure.” He remarked thoughtfully, placing the plate in the cupboard and chopsticks in the drawer. “Why don’t we continue watching Jin?” suggested the dog demon hanging up the damp towel to air dry, then followed her out of the kitchen and into the family room.

Grabbing the remote, Kagome fell back on the couch, pressing the buttons to turn on the television then the streaming service. She scrolled through the playlist finding the historical sci-fi drama rather quickly.  “We were on episode 5, right?” inquired the lounging female glancing at the yōkai now reclining in the seat next to her.

“I believe so,” said Sesshōmaru as a hand shot out to gently wrap his fingers around her slim wrist, preventing her from starting the video. “Before we start, I have something for you.” He announced while his other hand reached into his pocket.

“You do?” She softly uttered, staring at the demon in genuine surprise. The last thing Kagome expected was a gift of some kind. She pondered what it could be and why he was giving it to her. The only special thing that happened was their betrothal, but from what she knew, yōkai didn’t give engagement tokens as humans do.

“Yes. It was the reason I had to pop into the manor. Now hold out your hand,” He lightly demanded, his eyes twinkling with mirth as he spoke and let go of her wrist.

“Do I have to close my eyes?” retorted the teen flashing a mischievous grin and nudging him with a socked foot.

“If you wish.” The yōkai bantered in return flaunting the whites of his teeth and sending a wink her way before chuckling deeply.

She giggled along but didn’t close them too curious about the surprise. His hand slid from his pocket, carefully pulling out a small black box and setting it in the center of her palm. Big blue eyes widened at the sight, and shaky fingers carefully open it.

Inside nestled in the middle was a rose gold ring. The center was a spherical white gemstone with two circular diamonds accents on each side. It was beautiful and delicate, just as she preferred her jewelry to be.

Her tone went airy as she carefully seized the ring from the case and held it closer, witnessing a shimmery sheen of color shift in the light of the lamp. “It’s lovely.”

“You like it then?” He timidly asked, meticulously watching the small teen for a response.

Tucking a strand of lustrous hair behind an ear, Kagome peered up from the lovely ring and smiled largely. “Very much so.” She said before glancing back at the piece of jewelry to admire the sparkling gem yet again. This looked a lot like an engagement ring of sorts. Could it perchance be for what she had thought earlier? “Is this for our betrothal?” Eagerly questioned the curious female dying to know if it were or not.

“Yes.” Sesshōmaru gently confirmed. “It is usually not done with yōkai mating, but I know it is with human customs.” He explained carefully, plucking the delicate ring from her fingers and eyeing it in silent contemplation.

Her brows furrowed as she observed her boyfriend cautiously. Kagome cleared her throat, commanding the demon’s attention away from the tiny jewelry. “You said you had to grab it from the manor. Does that mean you have had it for some time?”

“It was my mothers.” Came the yōkai’s soft reply, gaze clouding with emotion before quickly disappearing. It was like it was never there in the first place. “I know that not everyone wears their rings, and if you don’t want to, we can get a necklace to place it on.” He informed the teen, gently twisting the small piece between his fingers and glancing up at her anxiously.

The ring was his mothers, and he was entrusting it to her. That was a big deal since Kagome knew how special the deceased woman was to Sesshōmaru, so that would mean anything from his mother would be very precious. It would be a shame to conceal something obviously cherished on a chain. Plus, she really did love it, and would rather it occupy a finger than on a necklace. “I would like to wear it.” She revealed, smiling when his apprehensive features morphed into that of joy as he slid the ring onto her left hand.

Admiring the ring once more, Kagome wondered about the center stone. “Is this moonstone?” She asked, watching the white gem change to an iridescent gleam of blue.

“Yes.” He confirmed continuing to explain the importance of the stone itself. “It signifies that a love will last a lifetime and help guide the person throughout life’s many changes.”

Had it been a wedding present? Though the mounting appeared to be new, not that it mattered any, the stones could be much older. Whoever had given this to the past Mrs. Tatakau, must have cared for her greatly. “It’s perfect!” She happily gushed, flinging her arms over his shoulders, crawling into his lap and brightly beaming at him. “Thank you, Maru.”

“Always.”  He tenderly said leaning forward to nuzzle the juncture of her neck before moving to kiss her temple and whisper into the dark silky waves. “I love you.” Came the muffled words and caused the fluttering of the other teen’s heart to beat wildly against her sternum.

“I know,” Kagome whispered in return and pulled away to get a proper look at her fiancé. She realized it was the first time she had thought of the yōkai as the man she was going to mate. It was terrifying and beyond thrilling all at the same time. It instantly made butterflies bloom within her stomach and body to hum with eager anticipation. The teen knew without a doubt that she genuinely loved this demon and couldn’t wait to see where their extraordinary journey would lead them. She shot him a watery smile, hand reaching up to caress his flushed cheek as she spoke. “I love you too.” Murmured the happy woman before swooping in to show her yōkai just how much she loved him.
