Drip.
A single droplet of a blue liquid dribbled from Frost’s chin.
It stained the dry, coarse stone beneath her feet as she swiftly tried to regain her bearing in this deep subterranean place.
Nothing but jagged walls surrounded her. They were lathered with a strange coat of red, with golden and silver veins, rich in minerals. A cavernous pocket best described this bizarre location that only the Blessed knew as the Derma layer.
Drip.
Another drip fell from elsewhere. Not a single breeze swept through, and dusty minerals puffed into the air with every fine movement. Just merely breathing was enough to awaken the sleeping layer of dirt.
The cavern itself was approximately tens of meters in height, and around a few hundred in every cardinal direction. It was massive and saw plateaus and other natural rock formations rise like blades.
But those were not stalactites. And neither did stalagmites exist, indicating that this cavern was effectively isolated from the Epiderma layer above. Either that, or this was a freshly carved cavern, although it was unlikely judging by the layer of undisturbed dirt here.
Though these meandering thoughts were only present to distract her from the rage that continued to gnaw at her chest like a stubborn flame.
“DAMMIT!” Frost pulverized the wall behind her. A sunken crater formed as dust bled through its cracks. She could not believe that she had allowed the Bloody Herring to escape her grasp. “How… Just what kind of skill did it have!? My foresight – my coat! It’s like it was leading me astray!”
Her voice echoed like a demonic throe. The crackling of the loose rock continued to play as dust spilled over her shoulders like a grey waterfall. Her form slowly began to return to normal now that there were no longer any threats in sight.
Frost resisted the urge to destroy this innocent wall, her balled fist trembling as if restrained with invisible chains. Her inability to snap up that Bloody Herring grinded at her heart to no end.
It was weak. Terribly weak. A single hit would have sufficed and yet she was unable to land her most powerful skills.
Her fist eventually fell to her side as she stepped away from the gushing dust, blasting her feathers clean as her hair finally returned to its short, messy form. Her eyes illuminated this darkened place, which was only lit up by the strange, red glow of an unknown material.
If it weren’t for her eyesight, then she would have never realized that this place was a cavern. But she had groveled in darker places. This kind of limited light was nothing to her…
And nothing to Jury either.
Frost let loose of a quivering sigh unlike herself when Jury came to mind. Her frustration instantly shifted to concern as she immediately consulted Nav regarding Jury and the others.
“Jury and Ignis are alive. Snap is rapidly returning to the City of Diamonds to seek information. Possibly help.” Nav swiftly answered as Frost clutched at her heart in relief.
“Snap managed to escape?” Frost whispered, now venturing into the foreboding darkness, approaching the edge of her plateau.
Drip.
Something else was dripping here, and it was not water judging from the lack of speleothems. The cavern was sterile in a way. Cleansed, and left to rot to the ebbs of time in complete isolation.
“I ordered Snap on your behalf. I assumed it was what you would have wanted.”
I see. Thank you. And… I’m sorry I couldn’t hear you.
“Your apologies mean nothing to an enigmatic existence like myself.”
Enigmatic or not doesn’t mean I shouldn’t treat you like a person. I hope you’ll understand some day… Hey, what about the triplets?
“Ber is currently with Ignis. And unfortunately, it is only her who has been sighted.”
Cer and Res are down here as well, right?
“Indeed. Likely a thousand more.”
This can’t get any worse, huh. But I’m surprised. I was expecting to get swarmed by Impuritas monsters the second we arrived. But nothing’s happened. This place… it’s lost.
Frost, teetering on the edge of this place, took in the sight of the cavern once more, spotting the source of the dripping sound with mournful eyes.
It was the wreckage of the express train.
Drip.
Blood dripped from the shattered windows of the train, which had found itself turned onto its side. The entire nose of the train was crushed like a tin can. The stench of death was ever prevalent, and she could not help but to feel unnerved by such a tragedy.
It’s awful. Nav. We’re in a cavern, somewhere deep underground. And I’m looking at the same train… I don’t think anyone’s alive in there.
“I am afraid that it is highly doubtful… but for your heart’s sake, I do hope for the best.”
And so, Frost dropped meters down and rushed to the train in hopes of finding a survivor… as unlikely as it was. The train itself was wedged between boulders and pillars of stone.
The stench of bitter iron was unbearable even from the outside. It worsened when she jumped on top, the metallic thud reaching every corner of the cavern like a banshee’s scream. Her size allowed her to fit into one of the shriveled windows as she began to call out for any survivors.
But she was only greeted with the harrowing drips, and the sound of moist squelching as she landed on a small mound of gore. Her heart sank to the immediate sight of unidentifiable bodies, all pilled up at the sunken end of the compartment.
Tens of mangled bodies were effectively reduced to paste, with entrails latching onto the walls and seats, decorated like grotesque crimson tinsels. Most of these people were thrown from their seats and were severed in half by the table.
There was no question about just how powerful the force of impact was, not to mention the sheer power of the manipulated gravity. It was not the first time she had seen such a sight, but it still never failed to disgust her from the very depths of her gut.
“Hello? Is there anyone still here? Hello!?” Frost continued, breaking through the doors of subsequent compartments where she was greeted with the same exact sight. There were children amongst them, strapped to their seats with their necks snapped.
“The price of manipulating a worldly law. Gravity is a dangerous fire to tame.”
A price, but I don’t believe Caldera Industries is to blame here. The Impuritas had a hand in this. I’m sure of it. They had some sort of goal. To collect people if that ‘eat or cannibalize’ phrase is anything to go by…
“You trailed off.”
… but I don’t know how much I can believe anything that left those fucked up lips of that fucking fish. To think Iscario had a hand in with these things. The supposed Prince of the Kingdom of Puritas, working with the Impuritas… can it get any more hilariously skewed?
“The perfect irony.”
Frost concealed her rage, paying every ounce of respect to the fallen as she cleared out the entire train, save for the final compartment. She burst through the door, pushing bodies away as she stepped over the horizontal door frame and stumbled across a hanging figure.
“Ahaha… hello… Black Dove. Have you come to save me in this gauntlet of bloodshed?”
It was L.S.
The Impuritas acquainted directly with the Golden Index. She hung from a window above, her long legs hooked outside as her hair dabbled into a pool of blood like a paintbrush.
The already on edge Frost was close to cleaving her head off just for being an Impuritas. But there was something else. Something that brought her to another near melting point.
“Calm down Frost –!”
“Where the fuck did you get that tail from!?” Frost grabbed L.S by the throat and dragged her straight inside, snapping her legs in the process as she doused her with Greater Healing.
There were far worser fates than death. Among them would be in the hands of a violent healer like Frost, who had every potential to keep a victim suffering perpetually. This was no grueling brawl. It was a one-sided interrogation.
And from a healer of all things.
The woman only giggled in response, but between each breath was a certain cry of pain. There was confusion in her golden eyes as she found herself at the mercy of a healer.
What was wrapped and impaled around the red spines was a piece of Jury’s fluffy tail. Frost could only presume the worse as she took L.S and pinned her against a wall. Her crumpled legs easily closed the massive height difference, although, it mattered little when Frost’s strength alone could have easily made her kneel.
They flailed like no more than bags of sausages, with her trousers serving as the half-burst casing.
“You’re part of the Golden Index and yet you’re one of them! What the fuck is an Impuritas like you doing with them!? Staining every little fucking thing you touch! Give me a single reason as to why I shouldn’t just kill you right now!”
“Frost! That is no fault of her own! Jury tried to save her! Do not put Jury’s efforts in vain!”
“Then Jury’s too kind for her own good. Just look at what you did to HER TAIL!” Frost rocked the woman, stabbing the many rods deeper into her body as she screamed and giggled.
“FROST PLEASE LISTEN TO ME!”
“Black Dove… are you perhaps a traitor as well? Ahah… Ouch… Ouch ouch ouch. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” Frost twisted the barbs that riddled the woman’s body.
Her HP never dropped below 1 no matter the injury. Frost could not see this person as anything other than a monster after having been faced with the Bloody Herring. For all she knew these people were also involved with Iscario’s plot.
“Traitor!? Like Iscario!? Like you!? For all I know you’re with that Bloody Herring, plotting something against the Nexus!”
“Wait wait wait wait. Ouch ouch ouch ouch! Why – Why would I betray the Nexus after I was given a chance to LIVE by my savior Carpalis!? I don’t believe… that she – that AAAAGH! That she would have sent a brute like you to help people in need! You’re kinder than that, aren’t you miss healer Black Dove!?”
“Listen to your feathers! I can hear them rustle! I implore you, please do not make unnecessary enemies out of normal people! The Archivist is begging you!”
“The Archivist!?”
Frost’s feathers rustled normally this time. Her words resounded deep with her coat, and it answered clearly. What she spoke of was undoubtably the truth, unlike the ambiguous words of the Bloody Herring.
It seemed to calm her down. Slightly, but enough that she was able to think rationally now. The woman’s breaths were ragged, croaky and she gargled on blood. Her hands drooped weakly to her sides, surrendering to Frost entirely.
She did not try to escape. Rather, she was confused by Frost’s actions. Because Frost, the Black Dove, was supposedly an ally. Therefore, this could be seen as an act of betrayal from her perspective.
Also, she didn’t even know what she did to anger Frost.
The fear she saw in this woman’s eyes shock her. Frost’s ugliness was drawn into the limelight. Being so close to these existence that caused nothing but calamities and suffering morally blinded her.
Ironically, Frost had administered her own dose of prejudice upon this person, who in the end, may not even be related to this entire ordeal.
“Have you realized that she may not even be an enemy?”
Yeah. I have. I’m sorry Nav. I’m on edge. Seeing Jury’s tail tripped me up. But I’m still wary.
And so, her grip weakened as she began casting various healing magic. With one hand, she held onto one of the metallic skewers and asked in a more reasonable voice:
“Carpalis knows you?”
“That… that she does. Yes. I mean yes. She does. I am the Golden Thumb Captain. L.S… short for Laughing Stock. Ahahaha. O-Ouch.” The woman recoiled as Frost slowly dragged the skewer out.
“Sorry… I’m sorry. Hold still. It shouldn’t hurt anymore. Fuck… Hey. Tell me, just what the hell are you? You’re an Impuritas. Just like that Bloody Herring. And you sounded like you knew them. Traitor?”
“… Impuritas? Me? What... A-Ahhhh! AAAAAAA! Ahahaha! Oh… ooooh. Oh dearest me. Oh benevolent laughing Carpalis…”
“I’m sorry. But there's no other way those things are coming out.” Frost’s Painkiller Passive soon kicked in, and she continued to free the woman from these thorns.
In the meantime, she continued to interrogate her.
“You didn’t answer my question. Lie, and I’ll kill you. Whatever skills or anomaly is keeping you alive will do little inside my stomach.”
“I… I don’t understand the name Impuritas. It’s unfamiliar to me. Ahaha. Believe me! I’ve only been called a Laughing Stock! H-Hence my name!”
“Then ‘what’ are you?” Frost glared. “You’re not normal as far as I’m concerned.”
“A-A person, no? Y-you mean my abnormal transformation!?”
“Transformation?” Frost was taken aback by this, freeing the woman from the final rod which rung as she threw it aside. “Transformation? Hey… L.S. Stand up. Turn your back to me. Your legs are fixed.”
“Aha? Are we friends now, miss healer Black Dove?” She said with a more hopeful voice, her body now in pristine shape aside from her apparel.
“It depends on what you can tell me. Bend down.” Frost dragged a strand of string from her fingers, watching the woman fall to her knees.
“O-oh?” For some reason, L.S made a rather… strange sound as if expecting something peculiar. She sounded disappointed when her neck was wrapped with a fine, metallic string.
Frost wanted something that would act as a leash. The same stringed hand clasped onto L.S forearm with an unbreakable grip. She did not want a repeat of an escaping Impuritas again, and even though she was undoubtedly faster and stronger, she was not going to take any chances with this one.
“Tell me more and I’ll think about keeping you alive. What do you mean by transformation?” Frost inquired, staring up into the woman’s golden eyes as she softly giggled.
“Like… hmm. Like an obsession. No. Characteristic! You see, I was a stock hoarder that became a laughing stock! Then, one day, I became this! The Laughing Stock! With the powers to laugh, and the marvelous power to haul goods! These red rods are my armaments!” She slapped her face with each mistake she made.
Frost could not tell if this woman was either crazy or had somehow warmed up to her. She also had to wonder just how much trust they put into Carpalis’ judgement. It somehow defused Frost's edge in a way.
“An obsession or characteristic that transforms a person into an Impuritas? And what about the monsters? The Hungry? The Pages? You’re telling me they have… wait. Characteristic. Like the hunger and rage of the Crimson Hunger…” Frost immediately fell into deep thought as she tried to discern just what these things exactly were.
But in the end, there was still little she knew. And it did not help that this Impuritas herself didn’t know what she was either, save that she transformed into one, whether through obsession or a certain characteristic.
It was almost like a contrast to the Corrupted, who were mostly created using emotions and beliefs.
“Do you believe that I, one of Carpalis’ benevolent Captains, are anything remotely similar to those monstrosities? Granted… granted that Mr. Fisher has seemingly turned into one of them. You know, an Animal.” L.S stated. “Betrayer of Carpalis’ generosity. Oh! And you’re an Anid!?”
“No. I’m the Amalgam. Whether you understand what it means or not doesn’t matter as long as we ‘get along’. Just come with me and keep talking… and are you hurt anywhere else?” Frost deeply sighed, pushing her ahead as she took Jury’s tail with her. “… Jury really did try to save you, huh.”
“She’s a beautiful woman, isn’t she? Truly an Angel in disguise –!”
“I said to keep moving.”
It just struck me how intense Frost's emotions are.
Yep. Especially now that Iscario's crept back into the picture.
Thanks for reading!
Wait... Hold up... If obsession and/or intense emotions can turn someone into a corrupted. Does that mean that there exists corrupted within the Nexus itself? All it would take for one of them to hide within is to simply be elusive enough to avoid any prying eyes. But then there's the Arbiter who should be able to find or at least direct people into finding out about them, no? The only way I see the corrupted exist for as long as they have and gather support from one of the stars (Iscario was a star, right?) is that they've somehow managed to "corrupt" a core part of the Nexus itself, which some Ateliers are aware of but can't spread information about it unless they want to risk an all out war between themselves if not a Paradise lost event.
Suggestion for change
You trailed of*
I believe an extra 'f' is needed in off*
Thanks for the confusion!
Edit- I think they can hide in the Nexus if they have a transformation skill or a illusion skill high enough to fool most eyes. Especially since nobody other than Frost is capable of seeing the status of fellow blessed, they wouldn't even think of trying!
Fixed, thank you!
Basically, Impuritas = Obsession/characteristic. Corrupted = Emotion/belief.
Interesting write up! There is actually a Corrupted currently on the Floor of Judgement, which was implied back when they discussed the Awakening with Magus. Although, we don't actually know what else is going on within the Nexus so who knows, maybe your theory has some weight, considering Iscario did betray the Nexus from within.
But who knows what awaits~!
Thank you for reading!
@Syringe I didn't mention the corrupted on the Arbiter's floor because during that discussion it was said that It's all good and the Arbiter has kept them under constant judgement (if I remember correctly). What I meant by being inside of the Nexus, is that the impuritas have managed to "convert" a floor of the Nexus with the help of Caldera industries, Inflow direct etc. They live and interact with the awakened, gather info before convening away from prying eyes to coordinate their movements, such as in the Derma layer.
There's also another theory that I came up with, one where it's not the Ateliers or the stars that are acting in the interest of corrupted, but it is the Nexus itself. This theory worked on the gross assumption that this system wants to preserve balance. It births corrupted by amassing negative emotions and sends teams of awakened to fight in dungeon and corrupted zones exchange for benefits. When the scales tip too heavily in favour of the corrupted, it summons archetypes and builds them floors to act out of. This would also need to work on the assumption that the Nexus existed in obscurity in the glory days of Paradise and came to prominence when Paradise was lost. There are, once again, too many holes in this theory and prove very little merit to consider!
My tinfoil hat is embarrassed and has refused to talk to me since I came up with this theory!
The fact that both Dungeons have been "Crimson", the Epidermis and Dermis, the weird not-corruption of the hearts, the nightly sores... this whole region around the Nexus IS one giant Corrupted, isn't it. The land itself is part of the chronicles. Maybe even the Nexus itself. I considered that it might be the whole planet, but for as f*cked up as Ganvis was, it wasn't like this...
Thanks for the chapter
If I understood correctly, Impuritas are those that had been stained by a will, an obsession of sorts, be it good or bad, be it rage or love thus turning than capable of only that, thay feel only rage, they feel only love, with this they they become inpures to the system as they are just one waking emotion instead of a "pure and complete" person
And the corrupted are those that get consumed by thier emotions, normally bad, and leaning to a sin. They are the fears of the people, the stories of the past, the remains of a glorious past. Be it close of far, if they accumulate enough emotion and beliefs they turn into a corrupted
Pretty much! Obsession/will vs Emotion/belief. A lot of the Impuritas is going to be clarified in this arc, so stay tuned!
Thanks for reading!
just don't tell me that all this is planned and that it is a great plan that she implemented herself or something, but personally I dislike manipulation of any kind
About how she couldn't read the Bloody Herring's movements? It'll be explained further in this arc why this is happening, since Frost's RESIST stat should make her immune to most manipulation attacks.
Thanks for reading!
Huh. Just thought of a comparison. Corrupted are like the Heartless while Impuritas are like Nobodies. And the more I think about it, the more fitting the comparison seems to be.
The cavern was sterile in away.
away --> a way
Cer and Res are down here with as well, right?

It somehow defused Frost edge in a way

Moved 100 and 101 to the next chapter.
@Pyrothium Thank you! Fixing the other chap asap!
Thanks for the chapter!
Thank you for reading!
Frost going emotional is nothing new, but she was a little to harsh, that demands a long lappillow therapy session
Lappillow would be a nice treat.
