Chapter 20 -special Christmas

Kyle slowly opened his eyelids. He stretched himself before checking the time on his clock. It was 11 am, the 24 december. He jolted out of his bed.

‘I need to prepare a lot of things today!’

He climbed the stairs and greeted his sister that was playing in the living-room. “Good morning Esper-chan.”

    “Good morning onii-san!”

    “Have I made you wait?”

His sister answered cheerfully. “No no, I was playing so it is okay. And I know you are tired so it’s good that you sleep too.”

“I say it a lot but you have good eyes for your age.”

She laughed lightly. Kyle pondered a few seconds before speaking again. “I will go outside to check if the snow isn’t too thick, stay here I will not be long. And after we will cook something to welcome Yukina-san.”

“Okay!” She nodded before resuming her game.

Kyle took his coat before heading out. Esper’s and his house was of a modest size, not too far from Esper’s elementary school. Its best feature was his extremely good quality/price ratio. Kyle considered himself quite lucky to get his hand on it since he wanted the best for his sister but wasn’t exactly rich either.

Kyle quickly removed the snow that was thinly covering the house’s porch. it wasn’t really thick but was enough to need it to be removed.

After a few minutes, Kyle re entered the house and headed to the living-room. “Do you want to help me cook, Esper-chan? It will be roasted turkey and mashed potatoes.”

    “Yay!”

They cooked for almost the entire afternoon, snacking on the dishes whenever they wanted. While Kyle was doing the dangerous chore like using the oven or baking the potatoes, Esper was assigned to peeling carefully the vegetables or stirring the cake paste. Soon delicious aromas invaded the kitchen and the siblings’ nostrils, putting them in the Christmas mood.

Everything was ready around 7pm and, soon after, the doorbell rang, announcing the arrival of their guest. Esper ran to the entrance door and opened, her black hair fluttering in the draught made by the door opening.

    “Good evening Yukina-san!”

“Hello Esper-chan. How are you?” Yukina was around 160cm tall, her chestnut hair reminded of her amber eyes, giving her a gentle air reinforced by her soft curves.

“Hello Yukina-san, it wasn’t too cold outside?” Kyle came after his sister and greeted Yukina.

“I am fine, this coat does its job wonderfully well.” She pointed at her anthracite coat. “By the way, I don’t know what you have cooked but it smells good.”

Hearing Yukina’s words, Esper puffed her chest, a smug look on her face. “Onii-san and I made everything together!”

    “I see, good job Esper-chan.”

“Let’s go to the living-room first, it’s a bit early to eat.”

Yukina checked her wristwatch. “You are right, how about we play a little game before eating?”

“What kind of game?” Esper asked, her eyes sparkling in anticipation.

“Let’s go the living room, I will explain the rules here.”

“As you see, each player has a hand of six cards. Each card represent a letter or a bonus. The goal is to be the first to write a word of three letters, one of four, one of five and one of six. The color of the cards represent their value. White cards are common and are at the bottom of the food chain. Next, there are the blue cards, weaker than the red ones. And at the summit of the pyramid, there are the black cards. You can erase an opponent’s word by writing down a word with the same number of letters but who has more points.”

Esper summed it up. “It’s a more enjoyable version of the scrabble then?”

“Yes. If you understood the basic rules, let’s give it a trial run.”

After a few games, Esper’s stomach started to growl, soon followed by the other’s. “Looks like it’s time to eat.” Kyle stated what everyone thought with a wry smile. The food’s heat was preserved by lids (not sure about this word teehee) so it had the right temperature to be enjoyed.

Esper greedily ate while Yukina and Kyle were eating more moderately, exchanging small jokes and stories. While eating her dessert, Esper couldn’t help but notice the atmosphere that surrounded her brother and his friend. ‘It’s rare to see Onii-san this relaxed. I knew it, Yukina-san is a witch, a witch of kindness.’

She then realized that it was already past 11pm. “I’m feeling sleepy Onii-san. I think I will go to bed soon.”

ALong with Yukina, Kyle snapped out of his thoughts and took a pair of seconds before answering. “...Yes, it’s getting late. Don’t forget to brush your teeth Esper-chan. I think Yukina and I will follow soon.”

“I know I know… Good night you two.”

“Good night to you too Esper-chan.”

After Esper left the living room to go to bed, they continued to speak for a bit before their eyelids became heavy.

Suddenly, Kyle realized something. “Ah! I totally forgot…”

    “Forgot what?”

“I haven’t prepared any bed for you... Well, I think I will sleep on the couch and leave you my bed.”

“Nonono! I’m fine with a sofa and some sheets!” Yukina was a bit flustered.

“I insist, it’s improper to make a guest sleep in the living room.”

After a small discussion, they finally decided. Kyle would sleep on the couch while Yukina would borrow her friend’s bed.

**

When Yukina dropped herself on the soft bed, she couldn’t help but notice Kyle’s smell. Blushing slightly, she smiled and closed her eyes. It was one of her best nights.

Merry Christmas dear readers! Gwenis the Optimized but Lazy writer in reporting duty~!

I learned three things while writing this chapter. First, writing in an environment where you are easily distracted is kinda difficult. Second, for me, writing heartwarming stories is more difficult than writing darker scènes for me. And last but not least, mechanical keyboards are a pain in the arse to use when you aren't use to them T^T.

That aside, Dark Souls 3 is now mine! I started it and even though it is hella hard, it's also one of the most satisfying games I played in my life.

Well, now I will say you a temporary Goodbye since I will not write anything for a pair of weeks. Until the end of my holidays to be precise. But worry not! Once these two weeks are finished, I will come back with my usual pace, a plot as thiccc as your Christmas turkey and some new self-proclaimed amazing Drawings!

Once again, merry Christmas (yes a bit early) and happy new year!
