Finally, this is the place where I will live during my stay at school. I never lived in a dormitory before since I directly rented a nearby apartment with my friends. We figured it would be easier to play around and invite ladies if we have our own place. I wonder how dorm life would be? I only saw modern dormitories that look like office buildings but this one looks like an apartment building. The cheap brick construction apartment building that is on the trend lately. It looks like there is a rooftop too but why is there a diving board at the rooftop? Pirate play? or some kind of fraternity initiation?

I want to avoid such burdensome things while living in a school. It might give me great connections to the people living in the town but it will also give me enemies and social obligations. I may be invited out of courtesy so I need to practice how to reject tactfully too. If they tried a more forceful approach I will show them the defensive combat of a former butler. I have the stamina to outlast every single one of them. I just hope my healing would last until the end.

"Oh, are you a new student or someone who wants to visit a student?"

A middle-aged hulking goblin(?) is standing at the entrance holding a huge spear. What kind of scene is this? Is he the dorm guard or some kind of caretaker? For now, it seem that conversation is possible. I should ignore the why and just think of him as a school staff.

"uh yeah, what ya want?"

The question might seem rude but I read that dwarfs are a direct and blunt bunch. So my phrasing should be good.

*wham*

"Guh!"
"Sheesh, another rude student. What is up with this place? Didn't your parents teach you to be polite to staffs at school?"
"I lost my memories so I don't remember such teachings. I may not remember my past memories but I'm sure no school staff whacks a student's stomach with a spear staff."
"I'm one of a kind, that is why. I'm the goblin dormitory caretaker Gau Spear. Nice to meet you! hahaha. No memories, eh. That is some kind of extreme condition you have. Oh, I remember the office saying a new student having no memories staying in the dorm. I didn't think you would be it, hahaha. Don't worry I will be sure to teach you the manners you forgot, Be prepared!!"
"How did you know about it when I just got registered a moment ago."
"Staff members have a communication crystal in case of emergencies. Oh, don't even think about taking it to play a prank messages, it only works with my status card. hahaha. Anyway to start with I need to see your student I.D. to confirm things. Don't worry I only need to see it once since I would remember you after today. You don't have to present it every time you come. Ah, if you have visitors they need to present their visitors pass every time. I might remember them but according to procedures they need the visitors pass if they want to see someone in the dorms. Ah, you can't have visitors of the opposite sex visit your dorm room. If we allow it for one person then the whole dorm would bring their lovers or prostitutes everyday. We can't have the dormitory turning into a whore house. hahaha."
"Ah, ok."

He likes to talk a lot huh. He made me remember the village elder. That old lady loved to talk all day. I know she doesn't anything to do but I rarely visit the village back then but every time I did I would waste a couple of hours just listening to her talk about everything that happened in the village. The worst part is that somehow her tales of nonsense often continue with 'Back in my day' before starting a new topic that also connects with 'back in my day'. It was never ending.

"Alright, you seem to be you. Go up to your room. You are responsible for your room but you also need to help out if the dorm needs repairs. We usually do repairs every month except if another explosion happens. Ah, you have the room to yourself. This isn't so you can concentrate in your studies but to prevent other students accidentally touch something in an enchanters or alchemist students desk and cause an explosion. It also prevents the worst case scenario of having enchanter students or alchemist students being in the same room together, since they might just destroy the whole dormitory in some chain reaction of explosions. hahaha"

That's very good news since I like my privacy. The reason for it being like that is ridiculously sound. Did it start out that way or did they learn from a past explosive experience. I hope my neighbor isn't one of those explosive students.

"Ah, I know what you are thinking. You are thinking if we changed the dormitory based on some past accidents. Too bad it was one person one room since the start. The one with a bad accident is an inn at the capital. An alchemist and enchanter were roommate in a communal room when a big bang occurred. You are also thinking if your neighbor is a student from those classes. haha Don't worry all of the alchemy and enchantment student live on the top two floors where the rooms are reinforced with runes."
"That's a relief. Since the top two floors have engraved runes, are the students also doing it?"
"Yes, the Rune magic students to be exact. We do have teachers check the finished work but using what you learned in class in everyday life can be a good practice for all of you. Now, get going, don't stand here all day trying to butter me up. You have a lot of things to take care of since you just moved in. Also, if you have free time go and study in the library. This is free education, don't waste it!"

How can you waste something free? Well, I prefer relaxing in the room than staying here conversing with a violent spear-wielding goblin.

"Then, bye"

This place really does look like an apartment building. Once you open the front doors you can already see the central staircase that leads all the way up to the top floor. The first floor has a laundry room behind the staircase and a janitors closet just beside it. The washrooms beside the janitors closet. There also seems to be a kitchen at the other end of hallway and a communal shower next to it. The kitchen seems big enough to fit about fifty people all at once. I say kitchen but the cooking place are only at the far back, the bulk of the kitchen is actually the dining area. So there are no student rooms on the first floor. I feel iffy about taking a bath with other people but it can't be helped.

If this uses the same layout as the school then the second floor above has the same layout, except the last two floors for the alchemy and enchanter students. Now that I think about it, how high is this place? Looking high into the staircase it looks about 10 stories high or somewhere close to that.

Third floor, the floor where I will live from now on. I need to explore this floor. Hmm, Hmm, about 18 rooms in this floor and washrooms at both ends of the floor. A simple hallway with 9 doors on both sides and the light source are the hanging lanterns across the hallway and the big window at both ends of the hallway. Yup, it really does look like an apartment building.

My room is 308 so it should be near the last room at the end. Wait, since the stair is only at one side of the building, the rooms at the same side of the stairs are smaller than the one at the other side. Now which one is mine, the answer is the larger side. Alright! Now that I think about it how do I open it? I don't have a key for the door. Let's go back to the spear goblin.

"Hmm, back so soon? Is there a problem with the room? If there is a hole in the wall then you can find some tools at the janitor's closet. The wooden planks are at the shed behind the dormitory. Just nail some on there like a band aid. We will do a proper repair by the end of the month."
"I haven't seen the room yet, I need the key to open the door."
"Hmm? I don't have the key. The one who registered you was supposed to give you the key once you decided to live in the dormitory."
"Eh!?, they didn't give me such a thing. Wait, does that mean not all students live in the dormitory?"
"Of course, not all of them live at the dormitory. If all students live on dormitories then you would only have a couple of students for one classroom. Most students choose to live at the town. Most of the students are children of townspeople so they already have a house or live in apartments in the town. More importantly, students don't want to repair the dormitory every month on top or repairing the school. We have quite a few alchemy and enchanter students after all and most of the live in the dormitories since a lot of rent-able houses at the town forbid practice at the houses. It gives a lot of annoyance to the neighborhood after all."
"I see, I don't have money to live at the town so I have no choice huh."
"Now that you are cornered then go to the registration office to get your keys!"
"Don't you have the keys?"
"Why would I have the keys. My only responsibility is to make sure you students don't do anything that would make a scandal for the school."
"Make a scandal, eh. Isn't it to protect the students?"
"How would I protect you when explosions happen every so often. As long as you don't intently try to kill your fellow students then I would ignore what happens."
"How tough. Anyway I want to check out my room first, can you use the master key to let me in."
"I don't have any master key."
"Eh, what if there is someone in trouble on the other side of the locked door?"
"I doubt a wooden door can block me and my spear."
"So you would destroy the door."
"Isn't it an emergency, why would I bother to unlock the door normally. Isn't it better to make an entrance with more of an impact in emergencies? The students are the one who would repair the door afterwards too so I don't have to worry about anything."
"I see, we are the one who would repair it after all. I'll go to the registration office then."
"Oh, go and get your key. The stairs would be a good exercise for you."

So this is how I start my dorm life, going back to the registration office to get my forgotten key. It could be worse, I could be next door to some explosive freak or have my room next to the washroom. Speaking of washrooms, are the students also the one who cleans the toilets? My god, How low do I have to go while living here. Haaaaaaaaah
