Epilogue/Prologue
I step out of the portal with one last wave, telling my lovely wives goodbye. Oh, and Kyle. I told him bye too. But he felt as awkward as I do now, watching that exchange. But what can anyone do? That was a special moment for us. We made our vows; we cemented our bonds.
I look out towards the world before me. I’m standing atop a hill, miles around me lies a city. In every direction, I see life. In every direction, I see a new story.
“I knew you would be here.” I look up, admiring the quad suns in the sky. They paint a beautiful purple-pink hue across the sky. Laying across the mountains, their ice-capped peaks twinkling for the final time.
“When did you figure it out?” The man asks, stepping from the shadows.
"It was easy to figure out, once I realized everyone else was turned, but you were nowhere to be found."
The man clicks his tongue. “And you kept your memories this time. That will make this a lot less fun.”
“Talim A’skar, who are you really?” I turn, and gaze upon the bronze-skinned man. His chipper demeanor from the Consulate, nowhere to be found. He still carries that mischievous smile, that twinkle of being up to no good in his eyes.
“Me? I don’t know.” Something in my gaze makes him take a half-step back. “Down girl. I truly don’t know. I’m here, and I don’t obey your rules. In fact, I think your rules are fucked up.”
“You’re the one who set Gehenna off her path, aren’t you? You’re ‘Him’ from the beginning of all of this.”
“Ah. I was hoping you’d never remember that part. But you had to have been given a reason to leave home that day, to arrive where you did. Had you not interrupted Fennis’ Transcendence, none of this may have happened. Queen may have never betrayed you.”
“Why would you do all this?”
“Why? Because it’s funny. To think, in all of existence, I am the one being outside your control. The one variable you cannot account for. Imagine all the fun you’ve had, that you can’t recall. Now imagine the fun you’re going to continue to have. Doesn’t it make you jump in joy?”
“Then I’ll kill you now.”
“Tsk tsk. That isn’t an option, my Lord Evangeline.” He snaps his fingers and, with a puff of smoke, he settles behind me.
“I could kill you now.” He runs his fingers down my neck. I turn to swat him away, but he ends up behind me again. I don’t bother turning around this time.
“Then why don’t you?”
“Because my moniker doesn’t suit such a thing?”
“You can’t have a Title. I assigned those.”
“Jester, at your service. Though the favorite amongst my many names, you may call me Loki.”
I turn to punch him, expecting him to have disappeared. To my surprise, he hasn’t. But my punch lacked the intended effect. He merely faces the side with my fist buried deep in his jaw.
“One day, perhaps, my Lord. But that is not this day. For now, I must away. It seems you have another guest. You are so popular.”
He turns to leave, stops, and looks back at me. “Remember, Evangeline, I will be with you forever.” His smile twists, his eyes glow a faint, familiar red. By the time I blink, he is gone.
The bushes beside me rattle, and a wisp of yellow stands out amongst the sky-blue backdrop. A moment later, a familiar bonnet appears, followed by the girl in question. My heart beats loudly in my ears.
“Nina!”
She gives a shy wave.
“It seems you’ve opted to keep your memory this time, my Lord.”
“Nina! Please! I’m Eve…”
“Ah, yes. That was your designation last adventure, wasn’t it? Eve it is.”
“Nina,” I call out to her. I reach out and pull her in. “What’s happened to you? Where is that smile I missed so much?”
She leans up and hugs me. “I am here, Eve, but I was afraid to be myself. I couldn’t believe that you truly kept your memories. You’ve never done that.”
Relieved, I sigh. “So, Moderator, what is this story?”
As she begins to speak, I realize one important fact. One, some would say, tiny thing. I remember that across all of our time together, I never told her what I needed to say. I never did what needed to be done. I wrap my arms around her waist and gently pull her up some.
My lips rest on hers. She hesitates for a long moment before returning the kiss. But when she does, it feels like she’s putting all of our lost time into it.
"I love you." We both echo at once. Surprised smiles dance upon our lips.
“So, ‘Moderator’ what is this story about?” I ask as we break away. She swats me for calling her that again.
“Well, we officially have to expect the unexpected with the arrival of this ‘Jester' person. But you see…”
And that is how it all ended. Well, how this story ended. Was it sufficient for you? Looking down on us, reading our personal thoughts, determining our actions. You may be this, “Observer” but you are full of it if you think that makes a difference.
For now, I’ll go along with your games. But as I proved with Gee… I can resist you. As time goes on, I will become even stronger. I will suffer through countless infinities if that means ending all of this and bringing peace to the lives I’ve sworn to protect. You may rest now, Observer, enjoying what is to be.
But never forget this one thing:
“I’m coming for you.”
So concludes, "Zeroth Knight re: Dawn" and the Evangeline Sayagawa "Zeroth Knight" tale as a whole. Evangeline Sayagawa's story has ended, and yet there is so much more to it. But that is another story, for another day. For now, I want to give a huge thanks for a couple of people who have made everything possible for me: @dusk2597 had the biggest role ever in helping me come this far and I couldn't have done it without him. I also owe a lot of my editing and a lot of the Beta (see what I did there?) reading to a special woman on Twitter: @OliviaCastetter Last, but certainly not least, I owe a massive round of thanks to all of you. Each and every single one of you has made this worthwhile and has ensured I will continue writing for a long, long time, even if I am never the most popular out there. <3 Charlotte's origin story, where she is from, and how she was pulled from her world and became the vessel for the "Knight" moniker is my next work. This was an interesting ride. So many mysteries, revelations and unexpected turns. But Im still unsatisfied with its ending.
The overall theme was that she was going forward for the people she loves and a tale of self-discovery. But the question for me in the end was if she truly loved anyone or cared about her 'Alphas'.
As far as I understood the tale of Loyalty, it was not the first time she went through the cycle but opte'd everytime for a repeat and memory reset. Everytime others had to suffer and die for a play she invented. For example, Rachel was a victim that was close to her. She didnt have her memory at the time but in the end she was the reason of her death, because Rachel was just a pawn in the play to set her on a path. But thats just an example for people who were close to her in a specific cycle. Lets not forget all the unknown humans who had to die on her stage.
Does she really love her creation if she lets them suffer repeatedly because of her selfishness?
Now to those she loves in a more direct sense.
Why didnt she release Rei from her neverending cylce? This time she decided to hold on to her memories, to not run anymore but did nothing for Rei. Rei believed with her last words that they will see each other again when Eve decides to restart the cycle and that she should live with her other wives until then. But the next cycle will never come. She now has the power to be together with Rei but instead chose inaction. Poor Rei in my opinion.
Next would be her wives. She decided to leave them because if she would stay the betas would come again. Makes sense. But why didnt she take them with her? In the end she left them alone and there is neither happines for her nor them. Even Rei told her to stay with them before she faded.
There is still the question why Nina is alive. At first I thought she was an aspect of Nina like the Rei she met on earth. But then, how could Nina recognize her as 'Eve'?
In the end only Gee found a satisfying end. Finally released from the cruel cycle Eve started a long time ago.
So yeah, since this was the last part of Eve's story its ending felt hollow.
Well, it isn't really her end. Just the end of this chapter. Her story will pick up one day again, starting from here. You make some good points and some others you missed the mark a little. The biggest two being Rei and Nina.
It's very subtle, but Nina never referred to Eve as "Zero" when in private. She was the only character to consistently remember Eve as "Eve." This was on purpose and not an error. She is the "Moderator." She was in the know, and was tasked to be an outside force to basically "referee" the whole thing and make sure things went accordingly. So even with one version of her dying, it had no effect on "Moderator" across time and space, woth only the events of the second volume being unknown to her as she wasn't there to witness it.
Rei's issue was that Eve didn't understand why, throughout all of time, she hadn't even told Rei the truth. So even with this singular time being an instance of keeping her memories, Eve doesn't possess all of her memories throughout the ages. She thus assumes that there has to be a reason she never told Rei the truth and decided to not tell her this time either. We can assume the reason she never told Rei was likely to protect Rei from knowing the horrible truth that A. Eve is the cause of Rei's most hated enemies and B. That Rei would likely be torn up with misery if she learned the truth of killing Eve's "Children" as she does love Eve.
As an aside, Rei did not mention seeing Eve again during the last cycle. She actually mentioned seeing Eve at the end of time. Rei's entire reason for fighting and allowing Eve to be with other women is that at the end of all things, she will be the one by Eve's side as she believes in their love. Also, as mentioned during the chapter that explained the "Divine Family," Rei's soul was fused with some of Eve's soul and effectively became a god herself. Even if Eve wanted to do something about it, she couldn't as they are now two sides to the same coin.
My assumption as to why Eve would leave them is because they exist in all worlds and all times and likely there can't be two of them in the same place. But that is a good point to bring up and something to think about for future stories. However, the feelings I had when writing it is that she didn't want to take them from a world that has almost ended, as the world needed them. Sort of keeping up with the theme already established that Eve is doomed to lonliness.
Hopefully you read this and hopfully it is some food for thought. All the better if you choose to keep discussing this.
P.S. Charlotte's origin story as to how she became "Knight" is the next story. With Gee's story after.
@Ozefen The point with Nina makes sense. That mystery is solved then.
Also I understood why Eve didnt tell Rei that she is the cause for the betas because it would be cruel but I think its equally cruel to leave her waiting until the end of time. Will there be even a time to be together when everything ends? It feels like she ran away again and thus inflicted lonliness on others.
Although the established theme was that Eve is doomed to lonliness, the story was all about to escape the lonliness and to move forward. What was even the point of going back to the world if not to be together? The wives are alive but have to live in a desolate world and the one who they all love left them behind. Even if they meet somewhere else in another plane/existence it will not be the same because they are not the same. That was the whole reason why Eve fought to stay herself.
In the end no one gained anything apart from Gee and thats sad.
Btw, I wrote reviews but be prepared, Im not the best reviewer :S
@Thor you did wonderful and you have been wonderful. For what it's worth, and perhaps it was sort of not communicated well, but the main reason Eve left, with or without the wives, was because something or someone messed up the entire system. So at the very end she didn't choose lonliness as a coward. She chose to sacrifice herself for a lonely existence, to get to the bottom of whatever the over arching evil is. She and the girls essentially gave marriage vows at the end and the promised to be together from that moment on. Love can continue without proximity. Though still definitely bittersweet. And that evil was presented at the end as "Jester." That is to say, Talim.
@Ozefen Mhm, yes you didnt communicate this well. There was no hint that she left because of the jester. I took her reason she gave to them at face value. That she left because the betas would come back otherwise.
Too be honest, I dont feel like that it was a bad thing that someone messed up her stage play because it was in itself messed up.
She and the girls essentially gave marriage vows at the end and the promised to be together from that moment on. Love can continue without proximity.
They promised to each other to be together from that moment on but will be never together. What worth has her vow if their love can never come to fruition or develop? In the end she not only doomed herself but also them to loneliness but she was the only one with a choice. They didnt want to leave her.
It would have been much kinder if she would have released them or broke up with them. That way they could have found happiness without loneliness. A more fulfilled life.
@Thor indeed. It was bittersweet as is. Eve is as imperfect as they come.
