The Witch in training Alice Dutrar was born as a conduit. Together with the unpredictable power flowing through her, also came an almost non-existent control over her own magic. After it wreaked havoc on her life for over two decades she knows that something has to change.
When she finally decides to enroll at the Royal Academy of Witchcraft she didn’t expect to get so much more than she had bargained for. In between suspicious deaths, vanishing magical artifacts, and her own dark heritage arising, there is the unfortunate contract she entered with the mysterious and talented Ithelyn Dawnstar.
But when the accidents around the Academy start to increase, the rather unlikely pair of Witches might just be the only ones with a chance of standing against the forces that lurk in the shadows.
As usual for Petrichor, characters relatable even at their most alien, and fluid, blunt and natural dialogue. While some sections feel a bit rushed, nothing that can't be expected from an unedited story - and the relationship between the protagonists feels truly interesting, with potential for complexity and depth.
I wish the story gave the characters a bit more space to develop themselves and their relationships - but on the other hand, this is not really unlike what a somewhat anxious person under stress would do. Waiting for more!
