Synopsis

"Argh, how did my life end up like this?!"

There was once a boy who's well-loved and popular with his peers. His smile could melt an adult's heart and his easygoing and sweet nature attracted a lot of girls who became his admirers.

Little did he know that such a blessed life wouldn't last forever.

Now, he is an ugly, overweight adult, working a job he doesn't like, and leading a life he doesn't want. No women want to be near him, let alone be his girlfriend, or even his wife. He is an oversized gear in a machine that doesn't even welcome him.

When he gets fired from his job, it is the last straw from him. He remembers his life as a kid, and now good and beautiful it was.

"I don't want this. I don't want this anymore!"

"I would be better off dead than having to live like this for a second longer!"

Suicidal, he passes by a flooding river, as there is a storm that day. He immediately thinks of throwing himself there, ending it once and for all.

And he does. But not because he actually has the balls to kill himself via drowning, but because he sees a little girl being carried down the river by the strong current.

In a split second, he decides that it would be better if she lives, even if he has to die in the process.

And he does. He saves her, throwing her into the side of the river. But then his legs, rarely ever used, suddenly cramp. He can do nothing as he is swallowed by the waves.

"Aah, it would be nice if I could be reincarnated into a fantasy world, like in those stories... I can do it all over, and do it better this time around..."

His wish is granted. When he wakes up, he's no longer his old, adult self. He's a baby, living in an entirely new world.

This is his story.

------

This story would have both happiness and hardships, heartwarming and sad moments, as well as romance that doesn't just end in a kiss. This is a harem story that will end up in a genuine polygamous relationship. It's also an adventure story, though it would stay as a slice-of-life for a good while as MC grows up.

I am both going to recommend and not recommend people to read this novel.

Why I would recommend this to people: Characters are great the main character does have his issues with being disenfranchised in his previous life but he seems to make progress in the beginning. The story is well flushed out the world is expansive and makes sense.

Now why I'm not going to recommend this to people: this novel starts like every other novel where the characters reincarnated and he gets new family and he starts learning magic. And you get to the point about 30-40 chapters in and the main character sister gets abducted tortured drugged and nearly raped leading to the parent's death and the main character becoming suicidal. Everything after this point can be described as torture p***. It keeps going from 5 or 10 chapters of Happy and then like 5 or 10 chapters of depravity back and forth.

I may be a bit skewed on views but I like the interactions between characters the most here. I really don't like using a rating systems honestly.

To me what matters at times is not how well written the story is but rather how flawed can you write your characters while also understanding the context of the world they are in and thereby nurturing their growth, it doesn't matter if they make perfect decisions but rather how true to themselves they are.

    How I view the story:

You have a depressed man who is given a second chance, but at the same time is going through his childhood again. He was once a shut-in with social-trust issues, but given a family that was curing those symptoms. You then have that relatively innocent man thrusted against the grim realities of the world, where all his thoughts are pure alien in some ways and where he had a extremely lucky start. Yes the boy is a man mentally, but I feel many of us don't live through certain tragedies that prepare us for such worlds. I want to see how the boy grows through the story, see what he sees value in, learns from others and his influence on others.

I will say I wish the author did a bit more for world building like how outside people view these events through their eyes without the main cast knowing. Its also a wee bit hard to differentiate the gaps between skill/spells levels, cuz it feels like certain spells can just suddenly nuke a town, when in reality its more like destroying only a mansion with a lot of side casualties to other buildings. And how that power leads the world by its nose and influences its user. Author does a decent job at flipping certain tropes on their head, but the consequences of doing such is what I want to see woven into the stories aftermath.

Other than that I guess I must say I like walking along side the story not knowing the potential outcome, the funny/sour/sweet experiences as well. And its fun to lay so silly jokes about the situation in the comment sections. At times it even gives me the urge to write my own stories. And I love those thoughts bouncing in my head.

"Reincarnation of a Worthless Man"? Nah, more like "Reincarnation of a Worthless Story".

Summary, title, and the first 60k+ words set up a story where the protagonist is set up to be someone who was 'worthless' and now isn't given this second chance. Instead of following that, the story derails into what clearly is going to be the death of his family and physical abuse by a "love interest".

I understand the desire to want the character to not be a grown man in a child's body, but if he's literally going to act like a child why even have him reincarnate? Even discounting that, why would someone above the age of 21 let themselves getting into these situations?

Don't waste your time. The story will lure you in with the idea of a certain type of story, then flip it on you. You'll have sunk enough time that you'll want to give it the benefit of the doubt, but it's not worth the effort (or more importantly the time).

The way it's going I wouldn't be surprised if the author didn't throw NTR in there just for sh*ts and giggles.

Was on board with this story and liked it until c49. Immediately dropped it. The previous story does not mesh with this drastic change at least in my opinion. I just can't even this story anymore.

This story is sublime. I hate her as much as I love her. It's a tragedy more often than not but that only makes the wins even better. The author has thought at his work. It's coherent and accomplished. The characters are well built. It's unlike any other story I've read on this site. This story will undoubtedly appeal to anyone who can appreciate the complexity of the work developed.

It went peaceful to Grimdark very quickly

Tragedy overdone and characters get abused a lot and pitiful MC,

There is no satisfaction, no fulfilment, nothing feels gained, only more to lose,

unless you enjoy abused characters I advise you not to read this novel.

Edit : My previous 1 star rating was due to me being personally about certain fate of certain character

Well I'll make it this review quick; Spoilers

Hugo is just a bad character. That's it, even now after I just read all of it and its fresh in my mind, I still cant find a good character trait to portray.

    Spoiler

1: When the MC gets down In the rut because an event, said character would grow as a person after going though it. Hugo doesn't, several times people help him get though it just so he goes and makes a mess again... And guess what, he just never learns, but hey just give him a new waifu and just forget about, leave it to future Hugo, Oh wait he'll just repeat this whole thing again. And if you think he will surely be wise and recognize his mistakes, as a 35 year old-His mental age at the start of his journey- and is over 40 in the more recent chapters, he wont. Oh you where waiting to see if he changes later on? Nope, he just becomes a murderhobo and uses force.

2: The whole trauma/torture scenes just get boring and repetitive. Yes, yes, friend in danger from bad guy #56, go save them and get a power up in the middle of the fight that the readers where not told of, "This is a new spell that I've been working on during my travels!! let me use it now at this prefect moment". We are never really told when he makes the spell he just now has a new spell... this has been some what fixed in the very late chapters but its a mess in the earlier ones. At the end of it all the trauma scene are just ways to make the MC go into a training arc... The best way to give a synopsis of all the scene is the amount of people that end up die is the amount the MC will get stronger...

3: Too many Deus Ex Machina events/ ROB (random omnipotent being) characters. Every time the MC is going to face a powerful enemy we always get introduced to a new ROB character and that basically tells us how the MC will win. Wow theirs this super strong character here, surely this isn't a ROB character #23 that will save the MC...

4: The character that end up alive are spoiled by the author, by some of the future readings that the author throws in as "Biography of Hugo Greenwood". Why should I care if X character is in a bind, when you already told me she would be a big figure in the future? It kill the fighting/high tension scenes.

5: Gods exist. TBH they are the worst characters, they have a lot of power but since the MC has the IQ of no more than 5 -and that's on a good day- they have to be nurfed a lot. I've read other novels where having Gods doesn't ruin the story. And that's by having a clear and defined scope of there power. So that the readers have an idea of what the gods can do and not do. This is prevent the readers going 'really another Deus Ex Machina event pulled out form nowhere...' and another classic 'if the gods have this power then why not just do this and insta-win?'.

6: It gets tiring having to see the MC win events/fights that he should of die in. Sure give him a win or two, but him beating the odds over and over again is boring. In my opinion, the fight scene are the worst, all the fights are just 'this stuff has to have happed perfectly or I'll lose this fight' and then he just wins.

7: The isekai tag isn't being used to its full potential. The whole point, in my opinion, is that the MC has a big repertoire to pull knowledge from, he should be more creative, use magic in new ways or at the very least experiment a little. The vast majority of times we just get a, 'omg I get that reference'. We never see him getting ideas for spells from all the manga/anime/games that he speaks of. Even worse, he never helps his other companions in making new spells with otherworldly knowledge. Sure he is not adept in that school of magic, but, nothing stops him from sharing his ideas.

8: What I do like is the world building, sure some of the scenes the author describes are basic, but not in a bad manner. They are not over the top, but, the descriptions that the author gives are more that enough to imagen the scenery. And are normal enough that people existing in that region makes some sense

    Spoiler

This is a bit extra from me, but the author has brought up that he likes RE:ZERO and how he takes inspiration from it. It feels like you read it, but you didn't understand it. Sure Subaru goes though traumatic experiences and he gowns from it, gets stronger to a degree, but, its because he understands why something happened and he learns from those experiences. He proceeds it and applies it to future experiences.

Hugo doesn't, he doesn't learn at all, he doesn't adapt, he keeps calling him self a loser to himself after being told not to because it affects his mental health, he keeps making the same mistakes even though he tells himself he wont, the only he is alive is because of Plot Armor and nothing more. And the small amount of times where he does use his experiences it doesn't even matter because he can just force his way though with his magic 'Even if they resist I'll just use magic, at this distance I can use this spell...', basically making it a nonissue in the fist place.

I dropped the story. Why? Because its too childish thats why. Everything about it is childish. The logic behind the plot, the characters, even the supposedly adults behaves like a child. In a world like that you'd expect a bit more violence and ruthlessness but no no no. The MC along with the others seem to be completely weak minded. Not to mention an 11 year old teasing a 6 ear old with panties? So ridiculous. Had they been 11 to 15 I could have accepted that but a 6 year old? The story along with everything else lacks maturity especially since the MC is already in his 2nd life. You'd he would have balls this time but no.
