The Blue Flower Mountains

The name given to a long mountain chain that starts in the far north and ends in the seas to the south. It's so massive it splits the continent in half, forcing merchants and travelers to go around it via the sea to the south. It got it's name because of the unique trees that grow there called "Blue Flower Trees". Their flowers bloom and glow blue. Originally, their glow was so bright it lit up the entire mountain chain. However, with the absence of Xuiying, the Blue Flower Trees behave much like regular trees and barely glow at all. That being said, the original name never changed.

The Mountains are said to be divine and evil can not touch them. Animals are often as intelligent as humans and thus can't be hunted or caught. Most importantly, fairies are live on the mountains. Over them is the Fairy Emperor, and he hates humans (who he views as evil).

His hatred of humans is so intense that no human dares try crossing the mountains. Those that have tried, died. Thus the mountains have been cut off from humans for centuries and they've been forced to travel around them (by sea).

Lately, however, there's a rumor that the Fairy Emperor has changed his mind. There's even people actively crossing over the mountains with his blessing.

The West Side

The Blue Flower Mountains divide the continent into two sections. The West side is the largest section. There are over two dozen countries on the West Side, with the biggest being the Tian Empire. The Tian Empire covers the entire far western portion of the continent. Geographically, the West has just about everything: deserts, marshes, rain forests, prairies etc.

The West Side is more culturally and regionally diverse, creating a plethora of interesting societies. There are different languages and writing systems, and social values vary widely depending on where you live.

In ages past such differences caused conflicts between countries, but with the rise of the Tian Empire few nations actively seek war with each other. Gaining the attention of the Tian Empire is almost guaranteed to get your nation conquered. Now, most nations live in (relative) peace with each other and keep tight control over their internal politics. Thus, the West Side is generally peaceful despite it's diversity.

The East Side

The East Side is narrow but long. There are about a dozen nations on the East Side, give or take. Due to the nearness of the Jianghu Islands, "might makes right" has greatly influenced the East Side cultures. Wars and infighting are fairly common as various nations struggle for supremacy, and thus the quality of life is significantly lower for everyone compared to the West Side. Unlike in the West, the cultures between nations are more similar than they are different, with even the language and writings being essentially the same.

Culturally, the East Side is far more conservative and restrictive, with a strong underlying cast system. Women are treated as commodities to be exchanged, rather than people. Everyone below Nobles is viewed as pawns who must give absolute obedience. For farmers, life is particularly harsh and smaller towns struggle to survive.

Characters
Bao Mei Hua

After her family was wiped out in a plague, Mei Hua was sent to live with a rich farmer. When she proved to be too clumsy to work in a farm, she was set to be sold as a slave. Rather than live in slavery, Mei Hua ran away and now is a permanent resident of the Blue Flower Mountain.

Bao Mei Hua means "treasured beautiful flower". She's tall and muscular for a girl and enjoys the great outdoors. While her face is rather ordinary, she does have a large chest (a fact she tries not to emphasis since it's gotten her unwanted attention). Her hobbies are playing the pipa, singing, and making lotions and soaps using ingredients from the mountains. She loves feeling clean and takes baths whenever the opportunity presents itself. She sometimes jokingly refers to herself as a "mountain monkey".

Her personality is friendly, but a bit rough around the edges. She values straight-forwardness because she's surrounded by sneaky fibbing fairies and feels terribly uncomfortable when people are too polite towards her. Because she was raised in isolation, she tends to be extremely trusting (to the point of gullibility) towards anyone she views as family and curious towards outsiders. She totally lacks a fear of strangers, causing people around her to worry constantly. Her personality could be called optimistic and kind, while still having a bit of a temper.

Since she was orphaned at a young age and had little in the way of family growing up, she secretly dreams of having a large family of her own someday.

Spoiler

Her husband is Huang Jin, Fairy Emperor and Lord of the Mountains. Mei Hua married him for a rather cavalier reason: he was ridiculously good looking and they got along well enough as friends and she didn't have many options, so why not? Later, as the years passed, she properly fell in love with him. Now she adores him, spoiling him constantly (whether he realizes it or not), and tries very hard to be a good wife to him.

Because she absolutely wants children, she finds herself pregnant every few years. While her pregnancy side-affects are fairly mild compared to many women, her mood swings are horrible. She has a terrible temper and loses control easily. Nearby friends and family either make themselves scarce or put up with her tantrums.

As a Mother, she's dotting and loves spending time with her children. She personally teaches them to spell, write, and basic history. While she dislikes doing it, she can also be strict and discipline her sons when needed. Not a single child of her's ever felt unloved or unfavored, and she never plays favorites.

Ye the Leaf Fairy

Created by Xuiying (Empress, Fairy Sister) using the Fairy Emperor as his base, Ye is tiny, chubby, and green. The back of his hair is leaf shaped, so when seen from behind he looks much like a leaf. Thus, he was named Ye (Leaf).

Ye has been alive for well over millennium. He's seen every nook and cranny of the mountains and read through all the scrolls left behind by Xuiying. He's an intelligent fairy who often uses his mind to make trouble rather than do anything useful with it. It could be said that 70% of the time he's actively looking to cause mischief.

The Fairy Emperor and Ye have a rocky relationship. It started going sour when the Fairy Emperor lost interest in him do to his disobedient nature. Later, Ye promised Xuiying he'd take care of the Fairy Emperor on her behalf, particularly helping him once he realizes his mistakes. However, the Fairy Emperor didn't seem interested in repenting, so Ye determined to annoy him every chance he got. This proved too successful, and now their relationship is one of permanently irritating each other even after they reconciled.

Ye absolutely adores Mei Hua, calling her MeiMei (as a nickname and also as in Little Sister). Mei Hua is something like his daughter, friend, sister, and long time crush. Because he's a fairy, he doesn't love as humans do and doesn't have the compulsion to give an absolute definition to his relationship with Mei Hua. Instead, he simply enjoys being around her and loving her, and sometimes causing her trouble (with even that being his way of showing her affection).

As a person, Ye is sly with a short temper. If he's your friend, he'll be so for life. But if he dislikes you, it's hard to change his mind (Jin being an example of this). When left to himself, he's somewhat mean and petty. But when he's got friends surrounding him, he'd be classified as a trickster with a good heart.

He secretly dreams of being properly human shaped, instead of looking like a plump leaf. He blames the Emperor for his appearance, knowing that Xuiying created him to look harmless and cute as a way to entice her Brother into liking Ye (that didn't work). He'd rather look like a human, so he could feel more related (in a family sense) to Xuiying, and then later with Mei Hua. But the only one who could change his looks are the Fairy Emperor, and their relationship is such that it seems unlikely that Ye will ever get what he wants.

Huang Jin

A strange fellow that Ye picked up. Lost his memories and acts like a toddler. The Fairy Emperor put Jin in Mei Hua's care, and now she spends her days babysitting a full grown man.

Spoiler

The Fairy Emperor found a mummified body is the dry south, resurrected it, and stuck his soul in it. The combined person was given the name Huang Jin by Fairy Ye. The body's original name went by "Bai Ju Yi" and was a young man who lived in the (now destroyed) Blue Flower Village.

Huang Jin, or just Jin, didn't know how to be human, so he forced Mei Hua to teach him through the trickery of Fairy Ye. The Fairy Emperor became human in the hope of being Mei Hua's family, thus compelling her to stay and not abandon him.

After a time, Jin and Mei Hua got married. Jin deeply loves his wife, but has an irrational fear of being abandoned by her. He's often needlessly jealous, too clingy, and hides things because he thinks that will give him a "tighter grip" on her heart. He's also very concerned about his physical appearance, because he knows his wife is shallow and is repulsed by guys that look like sissies (and unfortunately his body is naturally on the slim, delicate side of the male sex).

As a Father, Jin is a mixed bag and would likely be classified as "distant". Because they are Mei's sons, he will always have a soft spot for them. All their needs and wants, he'll give them. But because they take up Mei's attention and energy, that she could be spending with him, he finds their existence irritating. This puts him in an awkward spot emotionally, where he likes and dislikes them at the same time. Depending on how cooperative they're being with him on any given day will depend on amicable his attitude towards them will be in return. His impression of all his sons improves tremendously when they grow up and become independent (no longer taking up so much of his wife's time).

As a leader, he is cold and calculative. He views everything as "give and take" and so demands a payment for help requested by outsiders. He never makes a deal unless it strongly benefits him in some way. He dislikes humanity by default, with Mei being an exception and the Wu Family having earned his trust through many years of service. Those that break his deals are faced with the death penalty. He detests being disrespected, so requires being called "Lord Jin" at minimum from non-family members. Those that disrespect him to his face rarely live to tell about it.

The Fairy Emperor

Also called "the Fairy King" to those on the West Side of the Blue Flower Mountain Range.

A male (yang) spirit born from the mountain range. He has a sister (yin) known as the Fairy Empress or Xuiying. Both he and his sister are both the embodiment of the mountain, while being the mountain, and also being unique individuals. How such a thing is possible, no one knows. Both the Emperor and Empress simply knew that one day they existed, and they were alone (except for each other).

The energy of the Blue Flower Mountain Range naturally repels evil, so too does the Fairy Emperor and Empress. The Emperor detests any kind of evil, but the Empress is more forgiving. Thus, she never minded humans as her brother did. Their differences eventually lead the Empress getting chased out when her brother went into a fit from rage and jealousy.

Spoiler

The Fairy Emperor suffers from a slight case of insanity, which likely started when he went against his nature and drove his sister away. This insanity is repressed by the appearance and nearness of Mei Hua, whose spirit calms the Emperor's in a way similar to his now lost sister.

[collapse]

The Fairy Emperor is very proud and distant and would rather be respected than loved. Or so he thinks. But in the end he's just a very lonely pitiful guy who lies to himself.

Status: [volume 5] chapter 102: defining a nation

A great continuation to Empress, and is easily readable as a standalone. Mei Hua is best girl, and Ye is most mischievous boy. Great characters, great grammar, and a must view for any fans of romance.

This story is actually VERY good. Try the Book 1 first, then this. The setting is very unique and imaginative. The character designs are also impressive.
