Synopsis

On Solam, pirates raid the skies armed with deadly magic.

Stephan has lived a quiet, sheltered life of hard work and academic pursuits. He married for business, not for love.

Truth be told, he's a pansy.

Now he's on a pirate ship held aloft with arcane energies. Trapped in a steel box with criminals of the worst sort.

How does a reasonable man survive in a place such as this? Will he return home, or will he be seduced by the wild vices of freedom and open air?

    Ah, pirate fiction!

It's been around for veritable centuries, and is one of the most prominent examples of the pulp genre. Filled with swashbuckling heroes, dandy characters, and gold-toothed villains, pirates are a fascinating part of history that remain ingrained in popular culture to this day.

High Skies Piracy is no exception, and it's a great piece of pulp pirate fiction that I recommend to just about anyone looking for a fun fantasy adventure with colorful characters and a well-developed world.

The initial story of book one revolves around the tale of Stephan Lordling, an upper-class man who seems sick of his life, his marriage, and his general lot in the world. Through a series of unfortunate events, he is captured by pirates, and even worse so, ends up in the hands of a pirate crew led by the infamous pirate captain Quintilla Wenezian.

Her crew is a motley and colorful bunch: her magic-using twin sister Taira, bristling heavy Kurko, crazed pyromaniac Torch, aquatic hedonist Kazzul, and the young yet incredibly deadly Yin. This group of various mixed races seeks fame and fortune, and whether Stephan intended it or not, he becomes whipped into their adventures and the wild life of piracy.

This is in a lot of ways a celebration of classic pulp fiction, though with a slightly darker twist. Gore, language, drug use and s*x are abound in this story, and no detail is held back, so be warned if that's not your cup of tea.

Despite the dark tone, I got impressions of stories like Disney's Treasure Planet from High Skies, considering the multi-racial tone and the overall fun tone of the banter between the crew when people weren't dying horribly.

In the realm of critique, the story has no huge flaws necessarily.  If I had to nitpick, my only real gripe is that some elements of book one's ending felt slightly anti-climatic. I sense that was done on purpose though to build up the now ongoing second book and the third one after.  Either way it's a very negligible flaw.

Overall though, this is a great read that I highly recommend.  The world is well-developed, with a mix of modern and steampunk edge.  The various races are varied and wild, and the magic system in quite interesting when you read into it.  Characters are the best point though: you'd be hard-pressed not to find someone in the Wenezian crew to get attatched to.

Much like a piece of lost gold, this one's hard to put down, with a great cast and solid writing to boot.

    Final score: 4/5
