The Circle of Magi

The world Mikasa arrived at is called the Circle of Magi, known alternatively as the Circle or simply Magi for short.

Magi is comprised of four nations that form a circle around a center territory, and those nations are named after the four cardinal directions they represent. They are as follows:

Norith, the northern nation. Regalia is its capital, and it's known as the most prosperous city in the world.
Westra, the western nation. This is where Micah's hometown of Halloway is located.
Eastra, the eastern nation.
Zaoth, the southern nation. The village of Kleinwald is located here.

The center territory is known as Demon Country, and it is there that the majority of demons in Magi reside.

Volume 1 Notable Characters - First Half Part 1

Sawatari Mikasa/Micah Stronoff

Spoiler

A normal high school girl and the protagonist of the story. While on Earth, Mikasa was extremely popular at school, and excelled in areas like sports and academics. She was also known to have a brother complex towards her little brother, Yuu, but stalwartly denied it.

One day after hearing from her mother that Yuu had been hospitalized, Mikasa dashed out of school and was subsequently hit by a car on the way to the hospital. She then met with God and, after being told of her circumstances, was sent to be rebirthed into a new world. However, she remained unshakeable in her conviction to ensure Yuu's safety, and so made it her goal to reunite with her brother at any cost.

[collapse]

God

Spoiler

A being Mikasa encountered when she next awoke after her death. It introduced itself as a shapeless, formless nexus of interconnected dimensions that served no other purpose than to guide the souls of one reality into another. In order to make the process easier, Mikasa interpreted it as being the Christian God.

However, there seems to be something more to God, and his intentions for Mikasa...

[collapse]

Bernadetta

Spoiler

The woman who first found Mikasa and adopted her once she woke up in Magi, as well as the one to ultimately name her 'Micah'. A gentle and kind woman who serves as the owner of the Church of Nor, she inherited her duties from her father just as he did from his father, and holds great pride in continuing her family's tradition.

Though she can be more bold around her close friends, she often displays a meek, polite temperament, particularly towards strangers. A small amount of social anxiety plays a role in this, as she is a reclusive type that doesn't seek out many social relationships.

Despite this, her compassion is unmatched among her peers. She takes the teachings of Nor seriously, and strives to spread kindness to as many people as she can. She finds it extremely difficult to say "no" to anyone, and often goes out of her way to help whenever she sees someone in trouble.

Towards Micah, she is particularly soft and often spoils her, often earning the ire of Henrietta as a result. Due to her infertility, her greatest dream had been to have a child she could call her own, and so she considers Micah a living miracle; a gift from Nor to reward her for keeping benevolence in her heart always.

That is, until she began to suspect that Micah was hiding something from her, and her heart began to waver...

[collapse]

Henrietta

Spoiler

A nun who lives in the Church of Nor, as well as Bernadetta's childhood friend. A headstrong and loyal woman, Henrietta hardly takes any slack from anyone and works hard to make a living for herself and the other nuns. She is the household's main caretaker, as she handles everything from cooking to finances and general maintenance of the house.

Her original goal was to work in the mayor's office as a secretary, but despite studying hard for that goal she eventually abandoned it to support Bernadetta once her family fell on hard times   a fact that Bernadetta has never forgotten and feels endlessly guilty for. However, it's clear that the two share a special bond.

She currently works at a popular tavern in Halloway as a waitress, which combined with her good looks and... generous assets has earned her no small share of popularity from both her coworkers and the patrons. It's also made her no stranger to perverts and gropers, but luckily she's more than capable of taking care of herself.

Towards Micah, Henrietta is strict and domineering, but remains just as protective of her as she does the others. Over the years she let her get away with less and less, and often scolded her harshly when she made mistakes even at a young age. On the other hand though, she never failed to reward Micah when she excelled or on proper occasions like her birthday, even with their somewhat meager financial situation.

Despite her grievances, Henrietta's reliability is indisputable.

[collapse]

Josefine

Spoiler

A nun living in the Church of Nor. An energetic girl, Josefine was only twelve years old when Micah was found by Bernadetta, and continued to grow along with her as the years went by. Because of this, she often thought of herself as Micah's older sister, and treated her as such. Of all the nuns, Micah's relationship with Josefine was the most positive from start to finish, as the two had never been on bad terms with each other due to Josefine's upbeat nature and endearing childishness bringing a lighthearted mood to even the most dour of situations.

[collapse]

Madam Brunhilde

Spoiler

A nun living in the church of Nor. As a child, Brunhilde helped Bernadetta's grandfather found the church, and supported its growth even after he passed away. Now she watches over Bernadetta and her friends while living out the rest of her days.

Her relationship with Micah was at first somewhat hostile, but quickly became friendly once she discovered Micah's secret. From there the two have confided in each other about many things, and despite not knowing her real age, Brunhilde strongly considers Micah to be her last living friend.

Altheon and Barnabel

Spoiler

A pair of brothers that Micah encountered when they carried out a plan to evict the nuns from the Church of Nor. In the end, they became useful allies when they fell under the assumption that Micah was a demon taking the form of a normal child, and have assisted her on various occasions during her time in Halloway.

[collapse]

Miriam

Spoiler

A professional thief hired by Altheon and Barnabel as part of their plot against the Church of Nor. She was the first to sense that something was amiss with Micah, and ended up betraying the brothers to save herself during their eventual battle against the girl. In the end, she was killed by Micah in a rage for her cowardice. As a result of her own trauma with her late older brother resurfacing, Micah treated Miriam with disdain in her final moments, lamenting the fact that the woman had no one she cared about other than herself.

What she didn't know though, was that Miriam had two younger siblings she'd been taking care of, and though they lived in an alleyway with only the most meager amenities, she'd promised them that this most recent job of hers would net them enough to spend as they wanted, and the two had been waiting eagerly for her return...

[collapse]

Mr. Stronoff

Spoiler

Bernadetta's father, and the former owner of the Church of Nor. A year before Micah arrived on the church's doorstep, he'd left to join an expedition to Demon Country organized by the Norith Council, and subsequently went missing for five years.

The truth is that the expedition had gone horribly wrong, as the Demon King had ordered for all of their deaths after refusing to listen to what they had to say. Mr. Stronoff was the only survivor due to accepting a deal to become his executioner's contracted servant in exchange for his safe return to Regalia. After spending a four-year period in Regalia with no outside contact, he was finally allowed to return to his family - only to be horrified when the demon forced him to brutally attack Micah.

He was eventually defeated with the help of Brunhilde, but the demon promised that they would encounter Micah again in order to test her strength in the future, before fading away.

[collapse]

Minikui

Spoiler

A creature that appeared when Micah first attempted to use the spell [Summoning]. Its hideous appearance earned it its name from her just before it went on a rampage through Halloway, attacking people left and right with hugs and other affectionate gestures before eventually setting its sights on Henrietta, who mistook it for a pervert and beat it to death.

But just before the spell came undone, Micah could've swore she saw a twitch...

Volume 1 Notable Characters - Second Half

Aurelia Brightwind

Spoiler

A 7-year-old girl Micah encountered at a banquet hosted by Altheon and Barnabel. As a member of the noble Brightwind family, Aurelia is the younger sister to Wilhelmina Brightwind, one of the Five Legendary Heroes that went missing nearly two decades ago. Though she was haughty and quick-tempered, Micah eventually realized that she was just an earnest girl who held a lot of pride for her family and for her own abilities as a support mage. The two became fast friends, but unfortunately had to part when Aurelia returned to Regalia along with Stefan.

[collapse]

Stefan

Spoiler

Aurelia's butler/bodyguard that accompanied her to the banquet. Thanks to the efforts of Micah, Aurelia, and the others that assisted with the investigation, he was revealed to be the killer who murdered the assassin targeting Barnabel's life. But this truth belied the more horrible truth that he'd been targeting Aurelia's life in the first place.

His history with Aurelia's sister, Wilhelmina Brightwind, played a large role in his desire to kill Aurelia, and his own misfortunate life led him to develop feelings of nihilism and emptiness, believing that he was "broken" and ultimately wanting to be disposed of.

But Aurelia intervened, declaring that he would be brought back to Regalia with her to get the help he needs, bringing an end to the debacle.

[collapse]

Irene Cousteau

Spoiler

A woman who attended the banquet. As a member of the Cousteau family, Irene is one of the driving forces behind the largest and most profitable production of Light Crystals in Magi. At first Micah had a hard time getting a read on her through her mysterious smile, but soon found comfort in it with the realization that she was a good person at heart, if a tad playful.

[collapse]

Mariel

Spoiler

A Hero that arrived in Halloway for a delivery job. At first, Mariel ignored the rumors about "Nor's Angel", but soon found herself pulled into it by Leo and ultimately facing Micah in battle. Thanks in part to her skills as a mage, she and Leo were successfully able to take her into custody, and were later tasked with transporting her to a Regalian super prison. The nuns tried to stop them before they departed, but failed in their efforts and were ultimately forced to part with Micah and bid sorrowful farewells.

[collapse]

Leo

Spoiler

Mariel's partner who arrived with her to Halloway. His relaxed and carefree nature often clashed with Mariel's serious, no-nonsense attitude, but the two displayed something of a close relationship regardless, acting almost like brother and sister. It was he who took an interest in the rumors about "Nor's Angel", and who eventually dragged Mariel into it after encountering Micah in person.

During the fight against Micah, Leo became enraged when Mariel was hurt, and continued to act sourly towards her even after the situation had settled.

Volume 2 Notable Characters - First Half Part 1

Mariel and Leo

Spoiler

A pair of Freelance Heroes Micah first encountered in her hometown of Halloway. After defeating her in battle, the two Heroes were assigned the duty of escorting her to a maximum security prison in Regalia, the capital of Norith. Their personalities seemingly flipped around, Leo was dismissive and untrusting of Micah after their near death experience, whereas Mariel was more lenient and made an effort to get to know her as best she could all the way until they arrived. Unfortunately, due to the intervention of Circe, Mariel's attempts to spur Micah to change ended in failure, and she was mercilessly killed along with her partner Leo.

[collapse]

Circe

Spoiler

A mysterious woman who leads the worldwide religious group known as the Disciples of Circe, as well as the criminal enterprise hidden beneath it. Circe was responsible for freeing Micah from prison   albeit illegally   on the condition that she spend a period of five years as a member of her organization. Though she initially wanted to decline, the promise of power and protection from the law were too good to pass up, and Circe welcomed Micah as her "Angel Left Hand".

Carefree and enigmatic, Circe's hedonistic and cruel tendencies often led Micah to assume she cared for no one other than herself. However, there were also times when she displayed a surprisingly loving, gentle nature too. Was it just an act, or was it real? What other secrets surrounded her boss? Was there more to her recruitment than simply wanting another enforcer? For now, these answers remained unclear.

At the crux of the Zaothern Forest Incident, Circe made a daring appearance and revived the recently-deceased [Baphomet], revealing herself to be a necromancer to both Micah and the Heroes present alike. It was explained by Zaheer later on that the power of her dark magic is immense, but requires that she avoid exertion or stress, and consume sugars regularly to keep her strength.

Following her debrief, Micah revealed her doubts to Circe, who prompted her to think about whether or not she wanted to abandon Yuu and the path she was following and return to Halloway. In the end she decided to keep pursuing Yuu, albeit without abandoning her own morals, and as a show of good faith she revealed the truth of her past life to Circe. Faced with the girl's blind trust based on her own gut feelings, Circe agreed to assist in her search for Sawatari Yuu.

[collapse]

Zaheer

Spoiler

Circe's top lieutenant and Micah's senior in the Disciples of Circe. A dark-skinned man who keeps his silence most of the time, but makes no attempt to hide his complete devotion to Circe. The antithesis of his boss, Zaheer (affectionately called "Zahy" by Circe) is polite and amiable to most everyone he meets. However, he also possesses a tremendous amount of power, as Micah had never seen him sustain any sort of injury during the various missions they undertook together. To add onto that, he doesn't react to painful stimuli and never seems to fear death or injury, leading Micah to question the possibility that he may actually be immortal.

Following the Zaothern Forest Incident and the revelation of Circe being a necromancer, it was quickly revealed shortly after that Zaheer was someone she'd revived from death. He claimed to be a mere corpse floating downriver when Circe discovered him, and ever since she brought him back to life, he's pledged his eternal servitude to her and remains forever grateful.

Volume 2 Notable Characters - First Half Part 2

Talahanan Ilifiryrathea

Spoiler

A demon who lived in the Zaothern village of Kleinwald. Having worked as a farmer along with his wife and daughter, he lived a peaceful albeit somewhat ostracized life until the day monsters attacked, taking the lives of many villagers and plunging his once mundane existence into chaos. After helping to fight on the frontlines, Talahanan went on to save many villagers in peril, until he had to make the ultimate choice between saving his wife, Lizbeth, or his daughter and other important villagers who were in danger. He eventually chose the former, but just as he was about to try and make amends for his selfishness by checking up on the others, he was attacked by Micah, who had been sent to Zaoth to assassinate him.

Their ensuing battle was a complete clash of wills and conflicting emotions, ultimately ending in Micah's victory once Talahanan lost his will to fight. This enraged and saddened Micah, who had almost changed because of the kindness he'd shown to even an enemy like her, but not wanting to waste everything she'd done to get this far or Talahanan's own convictions, she tearfully finished him off in the end.

[collapse]

Lizbeth

Spoiler

Talahanan's wife, as well as the daughter of Kleinwald's village leader. Popular among the villagers, Lizbeth was charming, kind, and supportive towards her husband, and her playfulness often brought out his more confident side. She was the first to accept him for who he was, and it was with her support that he attempted to connect with the rest of the villagers.

When the village was attacked by monsters, Lizbeth remained home alone, and eventually found herself pinned by rubble after saving a boy's life. She despaired at the thought of dying all alone, but was saved by her husband, who chose to check on her over their daughter and the others in the village hall. She admitted that he'd made the wrong choice, but remained grateful and comforted him as he broke down from the stress and guilt. It wasn't long after that Micah arrived to kill him, and though Lizbeth tried to plead with the girl to spare her husband, she was eventually knocked unconscious, unable to prevent his subsequent death.

[collapse]

Red-Eyed Girl

Spoiler

An eleven year old half-demon girl, and the daughter of Talahanan and Lizbeth. She shared much of her father's shy and soft spoken temperament, and faced not only a portion of his scorn within the village, but a sizeable amount of bullying from the other kids as well for her blood red pupils despite otherwise looking completely human. When the village came under attack, she worried for the safety of her mother and slipped away from the village hall to rescue her, only to find herself being hunted by a group of hornbears. In her despair, she cried out for her parents desperately, but before the final blow was dealt she was saved by Micah, who took her away from the scene and towards her home.

She fell unconscious by the time they arrived, and woke up again as Micah's battle with Talahanan concluded. When she made her way into the barn, she was horrified to find her parents, laying side by side with an unknown person standing over them, their scarf piercing her father's chest as he struggled in agony. Panicking, Micah rushed her to avoid her face being seen, and as the girl braced fearfully, she took the chance to slip past her and escape from the village, leaving the family to their fate.

Volume 2 Notable Characters - Second Half

Ellie

Spoiler

A 13-year-old girl who nursed Micah back to health after she collapsed from her injuries. She later revealed herself to be a trainee Hero who was sent along with her team to deal with the rising monster populations, and that the cause of it all was a legendary monster known as [Baphomet]. Though her team was ordered to watch for signs of the mage that unsealed [Baphomet], Ellie grew fed up with waiting around while the surrounding villages were suffering attacks from the monsters and set out alone to reseal it when she came across Micah.

Initially distrustful of the girl, Micah used a false name and decided to accompany her on her quest, where they spent the next few weeks growing closer. Eventually Ellie revealed that she also grew up being distrustful of others, having been saddled with the burden of special treatment due to being the daughter of a famous Hero. But with her mother's encouragement, she overcame her fear of rejection and went on to meet her two best friends as a result. Her seemingly endless optimism and kindness urged Micah to let down her walls, and having already been pushed to change by Mariel and Talahanan previously, Micah finally relented with Ellie's insistence, agreeing to try to change herself, live more positively, and to not do anything that would hurt the people who love her.

Ellie and Micah went on to kill [Baphomet] together, but unfortunately had to part when Ellie's team and Circe arrived and began clashing. As they bid a silent farewell, Micah inwardly thanked Ellie for all her help, and earnestly hoped that they would meet again.

[collapse]

Eveline

Spoiler

Ellie's mother, and a famous Hero known as Eveline the Heaven Splitter, Eveline of the [Bisecting Slash], or more simply, Eveline of Two. She had a brash, rough disposition, and overall wasn't very ladylike, but still showed a fierce protective instinct towards her daughter, her best friend Alma, and Alma's own daughter Mare. Even with only one arm, she wielded her massive broadsword with ease, and Ellie admitted that Eveline taught her everything she knows.

[collapse]

Alma

Spoiler

Eveline's best friend, and a famous Hero known by the name Alma of the Skies. Alma was practically the opposite of Eveline: cool, calm, and collected at all times. She carefully analyzed each scene the Heroes came across with the hopes of finding clues to help track down Ellie, and reasoned out through such clues that Micah was an ally despite the fact that none of them knew who she was.

[collapse]

Mare

Spoiler

Alma's daughter, as well as one of Ellie's best friends. Her closest friend, actually, as she was the first person Ellie had approached after adopting her new mindset. According to Ellie, Mare had also been all alone when they met, but after some prodding, the two became extremely close.

As proof of this, Mare was completely fraught with worry during the search for Ellie, despite normally sharing her mother's calm, stoic temperament. She also chastised the Zaothern Hero who began to badmouth Ellie, nearly losing her temper over it, and in general acted somewhat overprotective towards the girl. When they arrived at the cave where [Baphomet] was defeated, Mare was the first to rush in ahead of her team, hastily checking Ellie over for injuries while scolding her for doing something so dangerous. Upon noticing Micah, she instantly became wary and hostile, pulling Ellie behind her protectively, and even Ellie's own insistence that Micah was a friend was not enough to get her to relent. Micah's involvement with her went no further than that, as they were forced to separate thanks to Circe's timely arrival.

[collapse]

Jester, A.K.A. The Woman in White

Spoiler

A mysterious woman dressed in elegant white clothing and donning a porcelain white comedy mask that Micah and Ellie encountered deep in the Zaothern Forest. The two accused her of being the mage who unsealed [Baphomet], and after a brief exchange that revealed her to be a contracted servant, attacked her. She displayed incredible skill with her parasol, defeating Ellie with ease while defending against Micah's long range attacks at the same time, and though Micah got the upper hand on her a few times, a crucial use of disinformation on her part allowed the woman to seize a decisive victory.

However, that victory was cut short by Ellie's timely intervention, forcing her to retreat as she struggled to heal from both her recent wounds, as well as the wounds she sustained earlier while battling [Baphomet] after she unsealed it. In the end, she decided to follow the two girls from a distance and watch how their own fight against the legendary monster would unfold. She showed particular interest in Micah, who she apparently recognized from somewhere.

Following the Zaothern Forest Incident, she reported back to a mysterious inner circle and was subsequently put on house arrest by her shadowy boss for failing to capture [Baphomet]. She seemed fine with this however, and once the meeting concluded, expressed her excitement at the prospect of how Micah would throw a wrench into things as an unknown element.

Cover Images
A Quick Note

In regards to the images for volumes 2 and onward, while they are made (through ai generation) in the likeness of characters from MEA, don't think of them as being exact 1-to-1 depictions. While extraordinarily impressive in my opinion, AI art can be finnicky and hard to nail exact details with, and these images are the result of hours of time spent trying to get them as close as possible by individuals who are inexperienced with the more technical nuances of the technology.

What I'm trying to say is, don't think too hard about whether these images match the character descriptions in-story. It's close enough.

Character Art
How this is gonna work

Like I mentioned at the end of chapter 25, I may or may not add some art of the characters if I end up making any. It'll all be AI generation of course (cuz it doesn't require me to talk to anyone like with commissions, lol), but I'll only include the very best/most accurate ones I get.

So whenever I add art for a new character, that character will show up here with their own section. The order will likely be random based on my whims, but I'll try and organize it by order of appearance in the story. And on that note, I will obviously only create art for characters that have actually appeared and been described by me. Anything that can be considered a spoiler will also be excluded, such as what was revealed at the end of chapter 25.

The images themselves will most likely be concept art similar to those sketches you see for anime/manga characters, where there's multiple drawings of them on the same white background to show off different angles, expressions, etc., but I might include some portrait shots too if I get good ones. Like I said in my disclaimer for the cover art though, you should NOT take these as official designs, because AI art is never 100% able to recreate what you're imagining. They're just general guidelines that can get pretty damn close.

Also, obviously you should ignore any deformities, weird looking hands, etc. I'll try to avoid using art that contains those sorts of things, but if I happen to include some, there was likely something in that image I thought was so good it was worth it.

Edit: Oh, by the way. I don't really mind if someone wants to use this art for something like a profile picture or something like that, but I'd appreciate it if you didn't try to sell these images or use them in commercial products, or otherwise try to claim them as your own. A simple message or link explaining where you got them goes a long way.

As for using it in your own novel... go ahead I guess. These depictions are specific to my characters, so it'd be weird to know their likenesses are being used elsewhere in the first place, but I don't really think it's that big a deal. Bonus points if you send me a link to your novel though :p

Circe

60ee39a6-02ab-414b-8846-d8cf08540a07.png

An enigmatic and hedonistic woman who serves as the leader of a powerful organization that influences the world from the shadows.

(Btw I know I never specified her having sunglasses as a defining trait in the story, but I thought they looked neat in these and it's not like she wouldn't wear them if she felt like it, so I went with it and made a whole bunch. Feel free to imagine them into canonicity going forward, but I doubt I'll go out of my way to mention it.)

A member of the traveling circus-turned-criminal group Mystic Menagerie. Formerly a dancer. Highly proficient in fire magic, making her a formidable opponent when combined with her extreme agility, flexibility and precision. Harbors feelings for the group's leader, Mr. Disappear, and would do anything to earn his favor.

(Note: Don't be confused by all the shifting eye colors. Janus is indeed heterochromatic, but her left eye is brown while her right eye is pink. Also, her body is covered in markings and tattoos, but the AI isn't a fan of those, so they're omitted here.)

Status: chapter 11: heart of snow

Summary: Overall, this is a very high quality story. This story avoids most of the common pitfalls and tropes that stories of this genre tend to have. If the synopsis or tags capture your interest, then this story is worth a read. For those who are still on the fence about reading, the first two chapters and the extra chapter are enough to know whether you want to continue with the story or not. If you are still on the fence after that, Chapters 3 and 4 should be enough for you to decide.

This is a very high quality story. The author has a solid grasp on the fundamentals it takes to craft a good book. A majority of the qualities that one would expect from a good book, from the basics like plot and setting to the more complex components like pacing and execution, are at the satisfactory level at the very least. There might be some parts that are a little lacking like the world building, but it isn't weak enough to weigh down the story as of Chapter 10. Of particular note is the writing level of this story. The writing level of this story is noticeably better than other stories that can be found on ScribbleHub, which strengthens this story's quality overall.

Where this story shines the most so far is in the development of its characters. As of this point, the cast of named characters is relatively small when compared to other works of this genre. This gives the author more time to add to the complexity of their characters. None of the characters in this story are one-dimensional; all characters have a rhyme or reason to their behaviors and actions. Even the characters with not a lot of screentime are given complexity through description or implication. Of course, as the driving force of the story, the main character is the most complex character of them all. Although character writing may not be a priority in other stories of this genre, it is definitely one of the priorities of this story and it shows.

The average length per chapter is about 8, 000 words. Almost all of the chapters in Volume 1 are written like mini-arcs, which means that they all have a beginning, middle, and end. Except for two specific chapters which make up two halves of a mini-arc, there are no abrupt endings or cliffhangers in Volume 1's chapters. Yet, the chapters are not isolated from one another, with the author adding plenty of foreshadowing and intrigue to keep the chapters connected to one another. This makes Volume 1 follow a half-episodic, half-continuous storyline. Volume 2 so far has a more continuous storyline. Unfortunately, the updates to this story come few and far between, which makes the wait between chapters in Volume 2 more painful because of this. At least the long chapter length helps alleviate the pain of waiting for additional chapters.

This story definitely deserves more readers than it has now, and this story is definitely worth a read.

Extra Note: If anyone is curious, I wrote a much longer, much more spoiler heavy comment of my thoughts and expectations about this story on "Chapter 10: The Mistress of All Evil is Now My Big Sister." This comment is very, VERY spoiler heavy, so I don't recommend you read it until you finish that chapter.
