For five years, Ama Hughes slaved as a beyisafo ('warrior witch') under the arch witch Mama Wu. Her job? Slaying the ravenous kakai that would otherwise devour innocent humans. In exchange, Ama’s little sister Chichi stayed alive in spite of her terminal illness. Simple enough. A tough deal, but a fair one.

So Ama is understandably bewildered when one of Mama Wu’s lieutenants shows up to kill her little sister. No one can explain why the deal has been rescinded, and Mama Wu is nowhere to be found. Teaming up with her cousin Mansa, a fledgling witch herself, Ama is forced into a supernatural campaign for which she is grossly unprepared. She battles against titanic forces while seeking answers to why her mentor would betray her this way. There is a dark conspiracy afoot, one that will send Ama to the very depths of hell, if she is ever to earn back her sister’s soul.
