Status: Chapter 15: Questions Asked and Answered

Edit: since the story has developed more, I feel comfortable giving a slightly more in-depth review, but I will probably update this review again once the first arc is finished, to make sure it remains accurate.

What I said about her character writing still remains valid, but expanding beyond that, the plot of the story is also fantastic so far. Lukha (the author) is a competent writer who manages to accurately tap into the exciting dogblood drama of the CN historical novel genre, filling her story with endless twists and turns, and shock reveals, that keeps the story constantly fresh and intriguing, yet through the composed and practical MC still manages to ground the story, keeping it from going rattling off the rails into completely ridiculous territory like many novels of this genre suffer from.

The summary warns that the story deals with some mature content, and I will add that as of this review (chapter 15), it has already brushed over some mature content matter, which I will put under spoilers for people who would like a heads up warning, but I won't post details to avoid complete spoilers:

    Spoiler

A plot thread of the current story arc deals with human trafficking, child grooming, and implied paedophilia.

The main character (Su Jing Fei) reacts to these dark subject matters with a far more realistic and relatable response than many other heroines, and the subjects are handled with the seriousness of their nature, rather than just being used for shock value.

Finally: the ML has only just recently appeared, so I can't give a detailed impression of him, but so far he seems like the type of cunning, black-bellied ML who is cold to others but may hopefully end up being warm and doting to the MC. I'm personally a fan of these MLs, so I look forward to seeing how their relationship develops.

Final thoughts (for now) : I still can't recommend this novel enough. It's an exciting read, with a believable, sympathetic MC, and lots of great drama that will constantly leave you feeling surprised and waiting excitedly for the next update.

PREVIOUS REVIEW (CHAPTER 3) : Although the novel is still in its early stages and I'll probably be updating my review later on to reflect its gradual developments, I still have some initial thoughts:

    Spoiler

Overall, the author has a really strong sense of characterisation in their writing. Since a lot of these kind of scheming transmigration stories depend on the strength of the characters' personalities and their relationships with one other - whether friendly or antagonistic - this really gives me high hopes for the novel going forward.

I also really appreciate that the author gave the the main character, Su Jing Fei, a more understated but practical background. This isn't a mega amazing ruthless super spy godly medical doctor assassin special forces expert. She's just a normal person who had a managerial position in her previous life that gave her some practical training in how to compose herself amongst nobility in the ancient era. This is a calm, level headed protagonist who is hyper aware of her limits and carefully considers how she comports herself.

Overall this novel draws inspiration from the general setting of many Chinese "transmigrated into a story/ancient world" webnovels, but the author has their own clear voice and narrative that adds some uniqueness to the setting while still celebrating the tropes that make the genre fun to read. I greatly look forward to where they go with it in the future.

    Status: chapter 34: secret meetings

First of all, I will keep this review spoiler free!

I've been reading this story since the beginning and this is definitely one of the more well written and thought out stories on Scribblehub. It's clear the author has put a lot of thought into the characterization and plot of the story. The setting comes off as realistic with the ancient chinese culture well preserved. I think one of my favorite parts about this story is that it has a logical progression of events, actions and motives. The plot doesn't drag on and has little to no filler. It moves along quickly and concisely which makes reading it enjoyable and refreshing.

As we follow the MC, Su Jing Fei as she gets to know her new circumstances and the events around her, it is incredibly easy to get invested in her and the supporting cast. I especially love Su Jing Fei's interactions with the ML, the flirting is cute and I can see just based on their background and personality that they are well suited for each other.

Additionally, The villains has understandable motives for their actions. The way Su Jing Fei circumvents those plots meant to ruin her is enjoyable to watch without having to suspend my belief at an OP and all knowing protagonist. She does her best with what she is given and is the kind of pragmatic yet moral MC that I enjoy reading about. Although it is sometime enjoyable to read about a MC faceslapping everyone who wronged her and low IQ villains, I greatly enjoy reading about this kind of MC more; someone who understands the value of a human life and the different difficulties everyone has on the path of life.

Edit: I also want to give a big shout out to the author! From her status updates, it's clear that she hasn't had the easiest time these past few months in RL. However, she has still managed to write chapters and keep us readers updated on what's happening so that we never felt like we were left hanging.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write and post this gem of a story. I've greatly enjoyed this story so far and I look forward to continuing on this whirlwind of a ride with you!

This review was written on the day of the Mid-Autumn festival so here is a little well wish from this reader to you!

    Status: prelude (to second arc)

well now first of all I'd like to applaud the author for making us such an amazing MC. It isn't a bad take on the reincarnation genre. Our MC isn't overpowered or strong but she's smart yet nowhere near impeccable. Though the author said that she owned an inn/hotel (?) in her past life so sometimes I think she's too sly (or she's just that way) or way too calm especially in the beginning. Yet I really liked the first arc and like the author pointed out it really gave us a reason for why she wants revenge. A lot of writers skip this so that was nice.

Keep up the good work author and I'm looking forward to the next arc.
