Synopsis

A man is reborn as a sentient dice.
A secret slumbers within him, and when it awakens, it casts everything he believed into doubt.

He rolls random spells.
Sometimes he heals. Sometimes he explodes.
Sometimes he remembers things he shouldn’t.

Bound to a girl he barely knows, haunted by memories he can’t outrun and a past that never belonged to him; he searches for answers.
But above all, he just wants his body back.

In a world where fate cheats and memory lies, he learns one thing:
Truth and memory don’t always sound the same.

What to expect:

- Magic and adventure.
- Absurd, unhinged comedy.
- Early slice-of-life chaos that gradually deepens into a larger, more complex world.
- A slow-burn journey that starts light and grows more meaningful over time.
- Layered characters who grow emotionally and reveal depth over time.
- If you're feeling stressed, this might be the kind of humor and heart you need.
- But once Volume 1: Prologue concludes and we enter Volume 2: The Departure, expect a shift. We get serious. There’s some drama, and a touch of tragedy ahead.

Status: chapter 37. the smile beneath the...

Awesome story.  Starts off with tons of humor and jokes, before diving into darker/heavier chapters.  Characters feel real, and the humor isn't just for filling, it's clearly an attempt by the main character to cope with becoming literal dice.  Nothing feels too random, and the magic is VERY well thought out and consistent, so far at least.  Small grammatical errors every now and then, but nothing that makes it hard to read or become confusing.  5/5 stars, loving this story!

my review upon reaching chapter 12

    Spoiler

I don't like to do a review so soon, since we still don't see where the development will go or how deep the story can go, but well, I'll give my impression.

For now, I give it about 3 stars, in my personal opinion; Now I understand why.

    Spoiler

For now, the story is riddled with jokes and gags. While it's not bad per se, the fact that it's constantly humorous takes away from the narrative or the story it's trying to develop.

While the characters have their backgrounds, personalities, and motivations, that is, they are not "paper characters" (I mean, they are not dull, they are not stereotypes taken from a mass-production "factory" and they are not "flat, " which is already said a lot about the typical ones who rely on continuous clichés; here, the chips are used but to laugh at the clichés themselves)...

But a "continuous chaos" is also transmitted; surely the author wanted to convey that feeling of chaos and "anything is possible" with which the world develops continuous sub-stories of "main" characters and the "chaos" of the co-protagonist itself. But at least for me, it is somewhat uncomfortable (not the world, but that of the co-protagonist girl Lyra)

    [collapse]

    With that said, my classifications

    story 4 stars

I like it, although for now I can't say "excellent" but it's good

    style 3 start

    Spoiler

It is intended to be taken down the path of "humor, " but it becomes more of a strionic humor, that is, an exaggerated and uncontrolled emotional expression, which can be very changeable and superficial.

While not a bad thing, Japanese stories often use this type of humor in their novels and mangas, but without eliminating the "depth" and seriousness of the stories themselves and the story's themes.

Yeah, well, it's not bad to give it some direction or develop how it's going. I personally don't like it that much, but it's not worth criticizing. It's just the "turn off your brain, laugh if you want" kind of story.

If not, one is finding several plot errors or getting pissed off by the senseless attitude of the co-protagonist (Lyra) and her lack of reflection and repentance about everything.

    [collapse]

characters 3 start although they are not "prefabricated" characters, Something is wrong here

    Spoiler

The characters most prominently featured were the MC (Dan), the co-protagonist (Lyra), her parents, and the childhood friend with the clichéd childhood crush.

While I like Dan's character, and he's the "soul" providing the narrative for the strionic jokes, and Lyra is the cause of the senseless chaos for Dan's suffering and despairing love/hate as the "comedy duo" of a stand-up comedy show... Something is "wrong" with Lyra's character; she does so many senseless things, even for a toddler.

While the father is the typical "too good for this world" loving father, he goes too far to the point where he seems to have no "personality." The mother, who should have disciplined her daughter for practically ruining the father's life and quite possibly the core of the family's livelihood, is conspicuously absent.

The childhood friend, well, it's still too early to say anything.

I think they wanted to simplify it enough for the "humor key" to the story. While not bad, overdoing this point can be more harmful than anything else. especially when you want to reach points in the story where they are truly serious or where it really begins to develop as a mature story.

    [collapse]

grammar- I cannot say or judge this, as I am not a natural English speaker, I mostly use a translator.

Maybe I'm being overly critical or picky. Perhaps several points I made were made on purpose. But I described and scored according to my personal taste. Others may not see the things I mention as flaws or problems, or they may simply read on and ignore them and give higher scores.

But if I have to "analyze" and criticize, that's my impression.

    -

But I repeat, it is still too early to have a mature impression. As far as I'm concerned, you already have a real impression of the future development after 20-30 chapters, when you've seen enough of the first story arc, or at the end of this one, since there is still more development to be done.

    updated review (chapter 20)

I won't make it as long as the previous one, since it will be an update of the previous one.

    Previously my rating was this:

    story 4 stars
    style 3 stars
    characters 3 stars
with an average grade of 3

now I would say that this is it
    story 4 stars

    style 4 stars

    Spoiler

    The level of absurd humor seems more balanced now, or at least no longer replaces plot development. I suppose the issue of excessive "humor" was exploited to cover up the lack of "content" with Lyra as a child and to give way (a bit) to her "chaotic nature, " which had been emphasized considerably in the development of the world and the plot;

Chaotic world, chaotic magic, random ruins, genies everywhere, etc.

    [collapse]

    characters 3.5 stars

    Spoiler

What's changed? While the "growth" or depth of other characters hasn't been much, Lyra's parents are conspicuously absent, and her childhood friend is still in the "friend zone." The two main characters have developed a bit more.

I'd say they're now more complex characters and not just "he does this because he can."

    [collapse]

    general grade 4

for it to be 5 stars. I'm too fussy about that kind of rating. I don't give 5 stars so easily.

I really like the concept I think it's really cool, and I think the writing is pretty good too especially when it's the pov of other characters. But I can't stand the dice POVs. The die's humor is just not for me. It has this like gay man sass combined with millennial humor dialed up by 100 times where every single comment and thought has to be a scathing sarcastic remark filled with pop culture allusions. I do get that it's meant to be a more humorous novel but when every single sentence is a smart quip showing off how nonchalant and self aware the protagonist is it starts to become a counter productive and takes me out of the story.

like there's one moment where he sees a child doing a kind gesture, not gonna be specific cause spoilers, and his first instinct is to be annoyed and make sarcastic comments about him?!? This child has done nothing to you and you're a fully grown man, stop judging the child and let him do as children do.

so pretty much, I like the writing, I also think it's a sick concept and I can definitely see potential through the other character's POVs but I don't just like the main character's POV it's doing a bit too much.
