These are the smallest of the daily challenges for Telgar Uthden. He has one goal: to get into the Elysium Academy to train and stand shoulder to shoulder with the best delvers of the Varistok Labyrinth, a sprawling nexus of dangers and a source of vast power and wealth, just below the crown city. All he needs is a summon to qualify for the academy.

But the summon he finds through a string of events is one of the most dangerous, prideful, and loud denizens of the entire labyrinth. Even worse, their summoning bond is busted, and now they must work together to survive the academy’s lessons, adversarial students who love to pick on a lowborn, and the labyrinth itself.

Telgar’s only saving grace is that he’s a freelance summoner, able to bond with more than one summon and utilize their powers in combinations that might give him the edge he needs. Too bad the only reward of survival is his 7 am lesson the next day…
