Synopsis

Gate: War of Two Worlds. A Gate story loosely based on the Gate manga/anime. It starts similer and then goes on its own stories.

It is a story when a alien Empire invades Philadelphia throught a magical Gate in the year 2025. The US leads a NATO-led war in Humanity first interstellar war.

A Ranger united called Vanguard-7 is led by Major Sharpe. He will have to face the unknown of this world while facing his past and upholding his ideals.

Note: Volume 1 is a mix of Gate cannon and original work. Volume 2 is mostly a copy of the Italica Arc. Starting Chapter 25 is when the book becomes mostly original with only light story arcs from the gate cannon but with my twist.

Just a head up, I haven't read all the way to the end of this book and I WILL NEVER READ IT!

That aside, let's get back to the review... I've been reading this for a while and I must say, I'm impressed as it was different from all types of GATE stories out there. The first time I read this, I was surprised as there isn't a lot of story of American GATE that executes perfectly. Then again, that was my first time reading it, now my perception of this story has changed.

This story managed to fill in some of what the original story lacks in world building, characters both main and side characters and some of the other aspect that most GATE fanfic lacks. They way you changed Rory's attitude is refreshing instead of clingy grandma like most of the fanfic. Lelei isn't a cardboard character and she's quite useful in helping Sharpe's unit against the Imps and constantly pester everyone for more knowledge which is something that we don't see a lot despite being sage-in-training. Other than that, unlike the original story, his members also have personalities and actually do something as contrast to the original GATE where

The exploration fills up some of the characters journey as they travel to capital which was a bit slow and tiring but if you're not here for war, then it might be right up your alley. There's also the aspect with the enemy where they are not dumb and managed to catch the NATO off guard at certain point of the story. Changes of tactics and outsmarting the NATO was certainly impressive to see but still didn't outweigh the superior power of modern weapons and tactics against them.

Overall, I didn't expect the author is capable of writing such a long story. It was well structured and planned since had already written two book. It was impressive.

Now that been said. I HATE IT.

So many terrible decisions were made for the sake of 'realism' and 'worldbuilding'.

To quote some of my pals from discord, this story is also known as 'The World of Wasting Assets' since the author kept piling up unnecessary assets into Special Region. Why is the Spooky gunship even deployed there in the first place? Heck, during the Elies Forest Campaign, they didn't even bother to send out fast mover like Hornet or even F-15E and bomb them with Mk 82 to flush the enemy out. When the Imps are on the run, they wasted tons of ammo on stragglers with combination of.50 cals, rifles and the 30mm from the gunship all on large straggling targets. Instead of bombing them to oblivion, let's just rotate our low on ammo and fuel Spooky gunship that only has eneough few rounds for single attack run. Huh, what a coincidence. And also, why are the US-NATO forces heading to Elies instead of pushing further straight into Sadera and capture it? Heck, if the US forces can march into Baghdad in 2 weeks without any problems while facing some difficulties along the way... HOW COME THE NATO-US COALITION CAN'T DO THE SAME?! Another aspect that ticked me off is how the author uses the units like he literally just throws out all the basics of infantry module straight into trashcan. No uses of maneuvers and flanking, nothing which leaves the soldiers acting like a braindead German main in War Thunder. I'm just a civvie, yet I care much about how infantry works.

Despite praising the characters, they are also dumb in their own way. During the forest thingy campaign, Sharpe didn't think and act fast despite being Major. When its in the frontlines, a decision need to be made especially when you're under attack but when they were surrounded and got attacked by surprised while saving some mob soldier, he refuse the need for air support prompting his 2IC to do the bidding instead. Oh and uh, Sharpe gets promoted to Colonel and somehow remains in the frontline despite the reality fact that Colonels DON'T GO FIGHT INTO FRONTLINE! And somehow, Rory's orgasmic feeling from killing someone is still in there... come on...

Story wise? The author kept dragging until its tiresome. As of now, the author had the second book running and I haven't read it yet.

    Spoiler

To quote my friends that have read it: IT DOESN'T GET BETTER!

    [collapse]

I can only review up to what I read. The longer I read, it doesn't get any better and there were some spelling errors in some of these chapters. The plot continues nowhere to be seen even after reading the raid on Sadera. Don't get me start on how everything was described. I was confused during the Elies forest bushy thingy arc to the point I don't know where was Sharpe's team or even where the enemy was hiding at. Oh did I even mention that magic somehow continues to get stronger as the chapter progresses? Like we're in some sort of a game?

All in all, if you want some world building story in the midst of war then this is your story but this isn't suited to be war story at all because of all the dragging plot point and sh*t ass terrible military tactics. If the author reaaaalllllyyy wanted to write this fanfic, he should've make a scientist or some PMC guy as the main character to do the whole worldbuilding and exploring only then I wouldn't bat an eye about it.

So yeah, long story short : If you're looking for good story about war and military life, this is not the one. You'd better off reading some better ones at fanfiction. net
