(This is the old version of the story. The new one can be found here under "Rekindle (Rework)" or on Royal Road as just "Rekindle")
“For gold is tried in the fire, and acceptable men in the furnace of adversity”.
What does it mean to be a “Hero”?
Long, long years of bloodshed and violence while serving in the US Army has quenched the flames of passion and desire to help others in Mark Floyd’s heart, leaving him as an empty shell of the man he used to be; mind haunted by nightmares, body broken by alcohol (and more).
But as long as even one ember remains in a person’s heart, there is still a chance for the passion they held to be rekindled. Mark is about to get that chance, and the choice that he makes may lead him to a new hope, or destruction.

Currently, im actually really enjoying this novel. The main character seems very down to earth and logical, retaining his human instinct even when going to another world. Its really enjoyable how the monsters in this world, are not extremely weak, but actually pose a threat to our MC. Not to over powered or such. Though some poings are cliche and their are some mistakes in the wording/grammar.

I really liked the details written by the author for this novel. Unlike some other where doing action is just doing it, the author put details like the emotions and how the character do it, making it easier to relate and imagine the scenes. Plotwise the logics are sound and good. Storyline isn't really for me to judge because if I didn't like it, I wouldn't read it. Though sometimes there are typos and misspelled words, overall is great.I would recommend it to people likes a detailed and logical stories. If you aren't one, I think you would struggle to read the first few chapters.

I think this is a great, well written story. Mark is a very practical character, he is gruff and kind. All the characters have distinct personalities and are interesting. The world seems very well created as well, with thought put into the way magic works. The story fells similar to a mix between isekai and D&d, it has the classical isekai elements of a modern person sent to another world by god to help develop the world, but without the japanese shenanigans of an overly righteous, bright, humble, naive, perverted, etc. Instead it has the down to earth, more balanced vision of a D&D game. I recommend this story to those who love fantasy, worldbuilding, game elements and practical mcs.
