It was an average day in Miami—then fractures in the sky appeared. A pulse from those cracks altered the population; some people's biology changed while others received magical and supernatural powers. After the chaos, the political drama ensued, followed by the discovery of portals that brought deadly creatures. They called this event "The Oscillation" and it changed Rachel's life forever.
I have to be honest I had my doubts while reading the first few paragraphs but the writer pulled through excellently in the following chapters and I am absolutely loving it so far.
This story is real, down to earth, and hits close to home so if you are looking for a good fantasy story in a western style then this is definitely for you. As with every story however this one too is not for everyone:If you are looking for something humorous or light-hearted then this one isn't it. If you don't like characters with an exploitable weakness (maybe you read a bit too much stories with OP wuxia characters and now you want every protagonist to be that way) then you are going to be disappointed. Finally, as all bad things come in threes, if you want every person who ever slighted the main character to be a puddle of blood by the end of the chapter then this isn't for you. This protagonist very much is willing to forgive some small stuff as long as you don't step across the line.

Just piling onto the other glowing reviews.
Well paced and well written. Interesting core group of characters with plenty for them to do. Good guys get believable pushback from the baddies and have to *gasp* deal with the political fallout of their actions?!
Sure, trust between the main squad is established pretty quick and easy. Sure, the baddies are a bit cartoonish in their hyper-throw-out-all-morals-ever villainy. But hey, I can forgive some expediency here and some arch baddies there for the overall quality.
