The world is changed. The very laws of nature, at least for humans, has twisted in on itself. Alone, men and women are weak, powerless, though men less so. To become strong a man must 'link up' with any number of women, be it one or a hundred, each link increases the man's power, while simultaneously bolstering the women linked to him, at a cost. Over time the link supplants the women's wills with the will of the man while retaining the individuality of the women.

Men and women on the spectrum are to be avoided as they are mentally 'broken' and the links with these broken individuals vary in effect, usually bad ones.
Drake is one of those 'broken' men, albeit capable of blending in with the rest of the world, but for the fact that he's not linked to anyone, and that he has absolutely no desire one way or the other, to link up with anyone. He just wants to be left alone to enjoy his simple life...
