Emma (née Marcus) Farrier is a fairly normal grad student, until she is struck by lightning and wakes up in the alternate world of Selene. Selene is a land of steam engines and carriages, of lords and beggars, of gear-wheels and rifle-smoke... as well as a land inhabited entirely by women. This wouldn't be a problem, except that before being transported here, Emma was a man (or at least she thought she was). Now, having been taken in by a noble family with a dark past, she must learn to survive this vicious new world. Worse still, she is on a collision course with powerful forces who seek to rule this planet, as well as coming to face the reason why she is on Selene in the first place...

Y'know what this story reminds me of? Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow!
Their DNA is the same: Both are set in a steampunk/dieselpunk alternate history where many things straight out of pulp novels are common, such as MECHANICAL WOMEN and GIANT ROBOT SPIDERS. Both revolve around a mystery quest to unmask a hidden mad scientist who is sending all manner of gruesome death machines after our protagonists. Both are action-packed romps that are a bit weak on the character side of things, slightly too enamored with their own spectacle to settle down and sufficiently develop the cast. And both are heckin' entertaining and fun!
This is very much a story where the author is finding their writing-legs as it progresses, but the minor flaws never distract overmuch from the compelling tale. Breezy escapist jaunt is my favorite kind of fiction, and I'm very much looking forward to reading the sequel. Nicely done!

Good! Really interesting, and the world-building is pretty classic fantasy, it's homey and nice
