Since I have finished this novel today, I though i'd give my impression of it.

TL;DR: I highly recommend reading it because it has an interesting story, but mainly because there is a sequel that does reference this one a few times and therefore helps to make sense and get references.

Disclaimer: I have read the sequel first, as such my perception is already coloured by a greatly improved version of this story. As such, it is harder to be completely objective.

    Plot:
Your average, literally average of average, guy dies and gets a chance to reincarnate into a new world of his choosing with the usual cheat powers. Although some names are changed, it is pretty much a DnD campaign.

Events in the world are somewhat preplanned but appear to be at the mercy of the dice. Battle and events are actually being rolled for, described, and the story bends to the dices will. This is both a good and bad thing, as many DMs will be able to lament about.

It is quite fast-paced though with little downtime, one event chasing the next, with just enough time to get some new equipment or spells. Another thing it has in common with most campaigns.

    Characters:
The MC is well described and also matures, a bit, over the course of the story, but his outlook on life and common sense are very much ingrained into his being. It is shown how he has problems adapting, which is very reasonable, and some may even find it annoying that he remains friendly and well-behaved even though he is thrown into a fantasy world where you'd think strength rules supreme. No worries, he does become more aggressive once he has the power to back it up.

There are a lot of side character and they too feel quite real with their own values, cultures, likes and dislikes. Some side-stories even shine more light into their background, which is nice to have. There is a downside though to the many characters that are introduced, and that is that they often don't appear again. They give the MC connections to use and topics to discuss, but besides a small main cast most vanish into history.

    World:
We don't get to know very much about the world besides what the MC actually sees himself. What we do get are interactions with that world's pantheon, not surprising since he was sent there by a god and some DnD classes draw from the divine to fuel their powers.

On the other hand, the culture of the tribes/clans he does meet is fleshed out and experienced nicely and livens up the atmosphere.

    Writing:
The writing is pretty good, with just the occasional error, missed word and such, here and there. The chapter size is also very good, with an average of 2, 6k. It is easy to read, with conversation and explanations of events going hand in hand.

    System/Power:
The DnD system he gets allows for him to progress very fast and get quite strong in a short time. This also sets the pace of the story and is something what was remedied in the sequel, since it left too little time for side-stories and flavouring.

    Personal thoughts:
As I first read the "improved version", or new game+, of this story, the flaws were quite apparent to me. Though, It also showed how much the author had grown over the process of the story.

I felt that I should "only" give it 4 stars because of the problems I saw with the pace and the rather abrupt end, but when I thought how I'd have felt about it not knowing the sequel, I became uncertain, especially since I did enjoy the journey until the end.

Since I still highly recommend reading it, just so you have the background knowledge for "Beyond Chaos", I will still give it a full score.

A fantastic story written with a pure DnD setting in order to follow our MC's progress. The development of the side characters is well made and I greatly enjoy the old English style vocabulary used for writing. One of the best stories I had the pleasure to read.
