Emily has a pretty normal life: go to school, study, beat up the bullies who try to start shit, go home, spend time with family. Nothing out of the ordinary here, at all. Not even the fact that she's a closeted trans girl who is biding her time until she can come out to the world and live her life openly.
A chance encounter with a boy from her school, however, changes all that.
Updates Fridays. With many thanks to TrismegistusShandy for invaluable editing, and to the members of the Writing Lair for comments and suggestions.

So, I just wanted to say after reading this that this is one of the few trans slice of life stories I've read that manages to:
Have a good plot
Have the last minute reveal be used later in the story
Have good representation of trans men
Have a love dynamic that works out in a way that's not necessarily "meant to be" but still fits very, very well
Keep me reading until the very last chapter
Thank you, Zoe, for writing this lovely story. Excited to see what you write in the future.

Apologies for grammatical errors, I’ve just finished my third read of this story and it’s now four in the morning so this review may be kinda scuffed. This story is one of my favorites. I don’t just mean ScribbleHub stories, this is one of my favorite stories from anything I’ve ever read. The characters in Performative Masculinity, Emily and Josh in particular, are such well rounded, well written, lovable, layered, and relatable characters, whose chemistry and banter never fails to put a smile on my face. Emily’s family is also amazingly written and add so many layers to the story. The plot is masterfully crafted. So many different emotions are conveyed perfectly, from humor, to drama, to love, and everything in between. It also has very realistic depictions of both trans women and trans men, which I appreciate quite a bit. I would recommend this story to anyone, whether you identify as transgender yourself or if you’re an ally. @OfficiallyZoe does an incredible job with Performative Masculinity, which will leave you reading chapter after chapter until you’re done and you realize ‘when did it become 4 am?’ This will definitely not be the last time I read this story, and I’m so excited to read the author’s future projects.
