I feel vindicated, knowing this story fell hard into mediocrity.

I have all respect for Faragi and the efforts they made with this novel, but I was right to say what I said when I said it, and it set a precedent.

Those of you who know, know.

After having read some of the other reviews... I don't see why people are reacting the way they are.

This is a solid read for anyone, as long as arachnids aren't an issue for you, of course.

      I do recommend reading this.

      Pre review:

The pace is not a big issues and its tempo simply went from an average of 3-1-3 to 2-1-2 with twice as many breaks of 1-1-1 as before.  This is both normal and well addressed in the story.  I don't understand people making a big deal out of this.  Stories normally start fast and slowly get slower untill the concentrated moments of speed occur.

      End pre review.

I loved the idea of this story.  And there is really a ton to love about this story.  Unpleasantly if your someone who likes to keep things in your brain for more then one chapter at a time this story will be 'lightly' annoying for chapters 1.1 to 2.4 kinda annoying for chapters 2.5 to 2.57 and 'rather infuriated' for chapters 2.58 to 3.18 and most assured that it will only grow worse every chapter there after.

I hate it when characters act not on 'impulse issues' but on written stupidity to not accomplish their goals.  And it drives me up the F***ING wall to see such a good story outline get ripped to pieces by horrible writing decisions.  It feels like almost every other chapter the main characters willfully, with no reason mind you, 1 refuses to ask important questions, 2 passively find out critical, life changing information with hardly any details and then refuse to follow up on it, or 3 conveniently forget about their own skills like they don't have a literal list view of them in game system display format.

The only part of the bad bits I would have been willing to keep overlooking with out complaint is the combat.  It was OK, if shallow as hell durring the first 30 or so chapters, but it gets really 2 dimensional, 'boardgame rules only' after 2.7!

The nice parts where the good foreshadowing, slow burn romance, emotional thinking and thought flow, and conversational structure.

      Spoiler

I cannot for the life of me decide if I love or dispise the goddess.  She feels like the only character that gives real information that clearly has an impact on the MC.  The unplesent part is, those moments just highlights the fact that the MC never goes for information from ANYONE else.  She seems to only want to learn it the hardest way by not only never seeking information but burring her head in the sand and really refusing to really hear new info untill it bashes her over the head.  Which it DOES.  REPEATEDLY.

      [collapse]

It feels as if this story needs a rework from about chapter 1.12 and up, some parts would be small reworks, but the MASSIVE changes those actions would lead too would ultimately change SOOOOOO many things in the story.  And yet would probably not change ANY of the major 'foreshadowing' events.  That in and of itself should show both how amazing the story board was and how terrible the connection points are.

I really like the slow burn romance, the main character discovering her feelings and the not realizing she is in love, while it is obvious to the reader, and then eventually learning that she has in fact fallen in love, but she isn't brave enough to confess. It's nice.

A really good adventure, a lot of foreboding in the later chapters but it is also diabetes inducing.

Such a good story. The second arc is a bit of a slow burn after the rush to level up and evolve in the first, but that does not dtract from the quality. The characters are fun and likeable, with depth and complexity. And I'm rooting hard for Kealyna and Cellestra.

This is a good story. It is not great, but the quality of the prose is very good.

It does struggle a bit though.

      Spoiler

It is impossible to not compare it to "So, I'm a spider, so what?" and falls extremely short of that story. You could say this is "SIaSsw" but without the struggle and hardship, without the character growth, without believable motivation and without a consistent plot. It starts out as a progression LitRPG, and you see immediately where these ideas come from. But her it happens superquick. Every 2-3 chapters there are new abilities, spells and evolutions, and that is a joy. Sadly, much of the abilities are very vague, and are quickly forgotten. It also is worth stating, that she is the only creature in the world with skills and abilityprogression like this, so every enemy she faces is basicly just a normal beast or a normal human/elf/troll, who occationally have a magical item or can use magic. This means that once she is as large as a human, she is immediately more powerfull than anything else she faces. When, in SlaSsw, every ability was a choice agonizsed over, and added to an expanding armory of weapons, here they quickly fall to the wayside, and are rarely used again.

After act 1 is over, the LitRPG is over as well. The entirety of act 2 is slice of life, and although there is a new way to progress and gain power, something that is repeatedly stated to be importent to the MC to be able to stop the two extremely  vague "antagonists" in the story (we litterally have never met one, never seen anyone of them do anything hostile since the first chapter untill well into act 3) the MC rarely, if ever tries to improve. Act 3 is more slice of life, but we get a paralell progression with her minions/children/adorable spiders. This is good, but I still miss the LitRPG I got into. I must also point out: There is NO conflict. At least extremely rare. The MC, first a small spider, then a big spider, then an "Arachne", which is basicly a white drider, is often seen as scary when first met, but she always, always meets someone who gives her the benefit of the doubt, and lets her interract with the rest of the world as an equal. She does not struggle at any point in the story in a social, combat or survivalist sense after the first 10 chapters.

      [collapse]

Spoiler over with. Still; it is a good story. I was hooked, and I binge read the entire thing. Just don't go into it expecting a tiny spider struggling to overcome impossible odds. Expect a well adjusted, socially accepted spider looking for friends and family, and finding them with the help of the most powerful allies and powers she could have.

I'm not good with choosing my words for reviews, but after spending most of the last day and a half binge-reading this story, I can safely say I enjoyed it a ton. The pacing and style of narration felt immersive to read and several chapters have been surprisingly adorable. I enjoyed the action just as much as the smaller details when characters interacted.

I'm sure I must have had the most ridiculous smile on my face while reading this story. It was a great mood-lifter during an uncomfortably warm couple of days and I look forward to more in the future.

The story is good... but there is a bit of fluff to it in a way that should probably be trimmed down at bit.

I'm talking about how sometimes chapters go by without anything important happening. Like how they spend three or four chapters in a row doing nothing but braiding the girl's hair.

I get that it is supposed to be cute and showing the relationship between the two girls, but did it seriously require three chapters of messing with her hair? If I was writing for that, it would be as an after the fact thing and be at most three paragraphs. And it happens more and more as the story progresses.

In other words, I think the story needs a haircut.

Characterization is... both strong and weak. There is a lot of dialogue showing the personalities of the two women, but the personalities are usually that of gossiping girls at a slumber party.

The MC is supposed to be a socially awkward knight, but none of that comes across in the way she talks or her actions. She doesn't speak politely or have some kind of rigorous exercise routine. She isn't seeking the kind of order and regulations that someone who was trained by the military from childhood should.

The other girl is supposed to be a shut in and a nerd (I think), but really doesn't come across as one. Her social skills and teasing are a little too confident for it, at least, during her dialogue they are.

And then there are the people who they cross on the road who are just a little TOO okay with there being a giant spider-elf lady. No one screaming their heads off and trying to sound the alarm.

Will still give it 5 stars, because it is good. Just because there are things that I would handle differently, doesn't change that. It is just a matter of taste.
