=====================================================================

Vampires are creatures of the night that fulfill their desires from dusk till dawn. Inhabiting the dark caves of the Kazimir mountains, the other races mostly disregard the unintelligent bloodthirsty creatures.

Damien Nightshade, third in line to the vampire throne, a descendant of an S-rank existence, is ostracized by his siblings and forced to leave the comfort of the caves. How will this germophobic, lazy, bloodthirsty vampire fit within the human realm?

This is Damien's dilemma as he awakens in a vampire’s body inside a familiar room, one belonging to a villain in the popular VR game "Throne and Awakening".

Damien considers himself a veteran of the game; he knew the game's storyline better than anyone with five years of experience and thousands of hours. Yet the internet wouldn't agree with him. A true veteran had to complete the game as the character "Damien Nightshade", the vampire prince hated by all living existences.

With the game world becoming reality and with knowledge of the storyline. Damien must venture out to avoid the many death flags looming over his head and seize every opportunity awaiting him.

But first, maybe he should deal with his maid, who silently plots his murder while he sleeps.

This tale is set in a magical world with a heavy emphasis on kingdom building, twisted nobles, and gruelling politics with sprinkles of magic, mystery, and the occasional action scene. Throne and Awakening is a world packed with danger around every corner. Join Damien as he attempts to navigate this terrifying world with the knowledge he should not possess and atypical powers that have no business belonging to a Vampire.

An amazing read. I have been reading this novel from day one and I really like how it is going. The MC and all other characters till now are all well written. The story is well thought out unlike author's previous work (which I also enjoyed until the timeskips happened). Game elements of the story aren't annoying and easy to understand.  Things does't always go as MC expects them to, which is quite common in these kind of "isekaied into game world" novels. All in all I would definitely recommend giving it a try.

Also a little things about the Mc's traits; they are inherent qualities of the Mc's body (not him himself, but the game character's) and are nothing like mind control; believe me I read a lot of mind control stuff ;) . They are just a form of passive abilities in a game. (Passives with both pros and cons)

As for the "schizophrenic-like voices", they are just the way for the author to express those traits in the Mc  actively, unlike the passive things they really are. The number of times these voice have appeared in the entire story till now (37 chapters) can also be counted on one (or two) hands, so its not like there is a constant voice asking the MC to be lazy and the only time they do so is when he does something that's against them.

Style- I don't like rating based on style because it's mostly subjective and I don't feel like rating a literary work based on that to be fair. So, five stars. P.s- I like the style.

Story- The story itself seemed to me, at first, to be cliche. Vampires? Transmigration? Pfft. All the tropes that I avoid. But me being a sucker for evil mcs, I jumped in anyway to read the first few chapters. Lo and behold, quite interesting. Hmm. Voices in the main character's head? They control his actions to an extent? Interesting~

Well, what can I say? Read more to find out why this novel breaks out of that mould of typicality crafted by cliches.

Grammar Score- Nothing to complain about. Story flows smoothly, dialogues are done well, expressions and scenes are explained beautifully. No hard time envisioning yourself into the story at all, and that's the point of it, right? To escape from our mundane, maybe slightly depressing life? No? Just me?

Character Score- This is where the story shines, where it differentiates itself from the masses. It becomes a veritable casanova, a gigachad among chads. Damien is truly one of the characters of all time, and the side characters are chef's muah. They bring depth, story, complexity, and even bloodied corpses to the table that seem to make the story come to life. Maybe too many bloodied corpses? Hell nah! The only question is why they haven't been sucked dry yet!

5/5 for now! Will gladly simp for Author again.

I have enjoyed the story so far. The world building is great and game elelements are well balanced. I just hope the same attention to detail will be paid to the balance of characters and power growth. I look forward to future chpters.

      • Good balance of MC PoV and other PoV, makes the world feel more fleshed out
      • Magic system has only the most basic game-influence, which works well in the story leaving room for creative use of magic
      • Characters act/react fairly realistically

Looking forward to see where this story goes and expands.

I Give 4 stars. The story did more showing than telling in the first 15 chapters or so but got better after that. The traits aren't really an issue they mostly push the character to do things sort of like in The Villain Wants to live novel. This isn't mind-control or anything like that. Say you're a greedy individual does the desire to collect money make you a mind-controlled individual?

This review was ported over from Royalroad. I just thought to put it up here too, since why not.

      Grammar (5✯)

There were very minor mistakes throughout my binge-reading session (which I pointed out in some comments), but they were just minor typos. They happen. Anyone who writes can confirm this.

From my experience, the author quickly responds and fixes these mistakes, so I didn't feel the need to take any points off of my rating.

Also, from what I've gathered from reading other readers' comments, it seems the grammar was much worse in the earlier days of this fiction? But it's great now, which is proof of the author's growth.

      Style (5✯)

Hm. I can't really make a lot of comments on this, since I don't have the technical knowledge to critique xKarnation's style.

I didn't really notice a lot of adverbs (y'know, those -ly things that some people seem to hate so much?) nor did notice too much telling and not enough showing.

As a reader though? It works.

I don't have any particular problems knowing who's saying what. My eyes don't wander in the middle of reading a huge block of text. Because there are none.

There are some chapters that are expositionary in nature, but I don't really mind those. And I don't think a novel can avoid those altogether anyway.

It's pretty easy to read and binge (although it still took me a lot of time since I could only read after coming home from work...).

I failed to find anything that stood out in a bad way, so here's a five star.

      Story (4.5✯)

      Ohhh-kay. Where do I begin...

First off, the LitRPG system. I actually like it.

I like stats, but I don't like it when I'm just looking at a wall of numbers. That sucks to read. I'll probably forget them all after a single paragraph too.

It also brings back nightmares of calculus and trigonometry classes that I failed when I still went to school.

Here, the stats are just what stage your abilities are, which is nice. ME LIKE LETTERS.

However, I do have some qualms with the system itself. I won't say too much since the author also knows what I'm talking about, he even mentioned that he didn't have the magic system entirely thought out when he started writing.

I also had some problems with how the MC advanced his magic so fast, but the reason was eventually explained, so I won't harp on that. If anyone starts reading this fiction due to my review, just know that most questions are eventually answered.

      You just gotta read on.

In any case, there's just something missing. I can't really tell what. I'm just... unsatisfied? I can't give it a five, even though I like it so much.

      Characters (4.5✯)

Okay, so this isn't really much of a spoiler, since you'll immediately encounter it in the first few chapters.

The MC's mental state is in limbo.

If you read the tags and synopsis, you'll know that the MC gets reincarnated into a vampire in the VR game he plays.

TLDR: The MC gets affected by his character's memories and traits.

This means that he is mentally unstable. At some points, rather than the MC reincarnating into the body of the game character, you'll think that the game character just got the MC's memories instead.

I don't really dislike this though, but I find a lot of people complain about it, so I opted to include it here.

My reason for not giving this a five, is due to feeling like the villains are kinda crap.

      Spoiler

One of them, his brother, is just a massive dumbo, but I don't mind that guy, since his attitude is due to the nature of his magic and race.

But the other one, the necro-prince, is portrayed as this wise schemer who took control of the noble faction yadda yadda. But his actions are kinda... meh.

      [collapse]

When a fiction has a clearly defined villain, I tend to attribute the MC's worth to the quality of the villain. So having such sh*tty villains kinda removes a lot of Damien's worth for me.

      Spoiler

It is eventually revealed that all of the nobles that are in the Prince's faction are actually zombies.

So it kind of explains why he isn't as competent as he was protrayed. Rather than winning people over, he just killed them and made them zombies after all.

      [collapse]

I'm still a bit miffed so instead of taking off a whole star from my rating, I only removed half.

Despite the crappy villains, I liked the other cast of characters. Particularly Damien. Thar and Varn were pretty nice too. I find Fay's attitude change throughout the novel very strange, so I reserve my opinion of her until I find out more about her. Right now, I'm not really sure what her personality is or what it'll become.

Damien is very cool, and I like that. A voice in the back of my mind is asking how a boy who was supposedly bedridden his whole life can act in such a way when he's suddenly thrown into another world, but I don't listen to that voice. That voice is an asshole. That voice is also the one who told me to watch Boku no Pico for the memes after all, so I don't really trust that voice's opinion too much.

I was initially attracted to this novel because it had vampires in it, and because of the vampire waifu on the cover (the cover is different now though).

Vanity. She receives a lot of hype, and I actually kinda like her too. Not enough to simp for her, since I don't think I'll enjoy getting desiccated or having my balls crushed.

But I like how she acts like how I would imagine a centuries-old vampire who's bored out of her mind would act.

To wrap this portion up... I am unsure. Perhaps I'll come back to this review when the cast's personalities have stabilized since at the moment they're still undergoing very erratic changes due to the whole turning-into-a-vampire thing.

For now, I'll give it a 4.5 star.

      Overall (5✯)

      Yep. A five.

I enjoyed it, and that's what mattered.

None of the technical stuff and no nittpicking.

      Just, the enjoyment factor.

If I may add, there was other stuff that I enjoyed that wasn't just the story.

The comment section (in Royalroad) seemed fun. There's this guy who keeps making memes while shamelessly asking for rep. Even though I was binging this, I found myself wondering what memes I'll find in the comment section.

The author was nice enough to answer any questions I had. He did it so fast too! Jesus, I don't think the man sleeps. (Maybe he's a vampire? Wait, no... vampires sleep a lot so that doesn't make any sense...)

Again, as for the author. He obviously has a good amount of drive to improve, and I felt that through binge-reading and reading the comments about how sh*tty his previous novel apparently was. (I'm not dissing him, some other people and the author himself mention how bad his previous work is.)

I haven't read his other stuff, but reading Damien Nightshade has given me enough reason to place my trust in XKARNATION going forward. I'm sure future chapters will be great.

And surely any future novels he writes after this one too!

Don't take my word for it though, just give his novel a try!

This "story" does not qualify as a story at all. The world building is so bad its insane everybody is so stupid that there should be nobody alive in this story!!!

      Spoiler

Ow the prince is a necromancer lets wait we can not risk a civil war or the other country will invade even thought the river is flooded for multiple weeks lets just wait till he decides to kill us all that sounds better!!! Oh this servant is mind controlled lets ignore her years of service and kill her even thought she has done no harm!!! Oh and the vampires are stuck in there mountains killing hundreds of humans daily but there economy can still be maintained don't know how but anything is possible if you don't give a f**k about writing a story!!! Oh the nobbles orchestrated a war to stop the peasants who awakened magic from consuming magic resources but oh wait! WHAT IS THAT!?!?!?! THEY DON'T NEED ANY RESOURCES FOR THEM TO ADVANCE TO B+ GRADE!!! AND THERE IS NO RESOURCE TO ADVANCE TO A GRADE ON THIS PART OF THE CONTINENT!!! NOT TO MENTION THAT MAGIC IN THIS NOVEL IS COMPLETE BS THE MC NOT KNOWING sh*t ABOUT IT JUST SHOWING IMAGES OF THE REAL WOLD LETTING PEOPLE ADVANCE INTO B GRADE IN MINUTES!!!And the constant praising of the MC like a guy literally stabs him a 100 times leaving him on his death bead but how scary he is in a bloody pile on the ground lets run away then discus his greatness and how afraid we are of the big bad villain!

      [collapse]
The characters are without a character at all they are just names. Not to mention the MC being so f**king op that he should be able to just take control of the world in a week a moth at most with his blood control and soul control abilities which have no repercussions for usage not to mention them granting him more abilities for 1 sec of usage. DON'T READ THIS STORY UNLESS ALL YOU WANT IS A STORY WITH 0 CONSISTENCY, EVERYBODY BEING WITHOUT A BRAIN AND THE POINTLESS VILLAINY THAT SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN EVERYBODY KILLED!!! Don't read this expecting a competent villain struggling against the odds using everything at his disposal to win (using his knowledge of future events to turn the odds in his favour all that about knowing the future is abandoned in a heart beat) this is not that kind of story.
