Sam is a quiet 16 year old high school guy. He's a nerd and a geek. A pretty typical guy. When his friends try to peer pressure him into playing the tank role for the new VR game they all want to play, he rebels, although he can't quite figure out why. Follow Sam as he dives into the world of Pellan Rise as the dainty little healer named Sylanna, where she discovers that the game has a lot more influence over the real world than everyone thought.
The work that inspired me to write with Valerie
Pellan Rise was the series that made me fall in love with QuietValerie's writing and her worldbuilding and why later on I ended up writing with her for her Kammi Kettu series.
Pellan rise is full of adorable characters, epic worldbuilding, cool abilities and fun adventures.
A must read if you like any of her other work!

I will be truthfull this story... helped me discover myself more then anything ever done before I have found my friend, loved one and family!
This story is something totally unseen before about the Virtual reality theme, yes we a lot of time see similarity in that type of fiction/novel, But Valerie suceeded geniusly to make it different and really lovely in her incredible writing style!
You will certainly be able to identify to one of the character she have created as they are really incredible (there some jerk from one specific individual), and there will be lot of cute and lovely girl love moment !
There also a incredible originality and visual description of each of the character of this universe!
Truly something that I deeply loved as a visual person!
There is also some important thing that lgbt folk live with, be it prejudice or none supportive family member, or even some cultural rejection! So it can maybe be educational to some people and not new for others!
All that to say you should give it a try as you will not regret it and probably fall in love with Syl character and kindheart !

A story of a very realistic (aside from the fantastical elements) depiction of a trans girl within a quite fantastical but interesting setting. Syl is especially interesting, and her various interactions and situations she gets into feel so realistic and visceral, far more than in most stories I've read.
That said, the characters really carry the series over the story, even if a lot of them are two dimensional at best. The story is a bit of a jumbled mess that goes all over the place and takes a while to even acknowledge that major subplots even exist beyond starting them. Even worse is that it feels more like a prologue to a much bigger story that (as far as I know) doesn't exist.
Cosmic horror is great and how it looms in the shadows over everything is very interesting, but when it just becomes, "well, it's a thing that's gonna have to be dealt with someday", it's hard to accept how much time and effort was put into teasing it.
This was still a great read and I don't really have any regrets about it. Just, it's easy to feel how much bigger of a story it was supposed to be, only to have the single biggest part stall out because the author decided the story couldn't afford to be that long. If it was cut out entirely or something, then this would be a much smoother stand alone story without teasing some sort of epic length greater story that doesn't exist.

This story was releasing around the time I was in the middle of reading another one of QuietValerie's stories, "Kammi Kettu." Because of this, I struggled to decide which to read first, which was almost impossible to answer.
I really like Pellan Rise for its world-building and the way it treats virtual reality as a way of becoming your real self, instead of mindless escapism.
You can expect cute, huggable characters and fun shenanigans as they mess around on their adventures.

The author states it's her first work, and I can see the difference in comparison to her later stories. But the difference is finesse. But in exchange for that finesse, the brute force of the story hits deeper. So much of this story resonated with me, more than most do. In so many ways it's like this is a story about me. So maybe I'm biased but I don't care. It made me laugh and cry and I'll treasure it.

Simply wonderful and sweet.

What a fantastic universe the author has created. The protagonist has a back story and inadvertently stumbles in to a situation where their rather private desires end up becoming all too real through the game. This bleeds back in to the real world and an entire series of events happen that impact other people as well. There are some antagonists in one world, or the other. (And wait? Some that are in both?? Oooh I can't wait to find out more!).
Such a great story line so far, This is a page turner and actually a bit of an agony to wait for each new chapter.
Loving the adventure that we are being taken on.

really good writing (as usual) but I really hated the ending
the ending left so many lose plot threads and so many unanswered questions, I understand that this takes place in one big, connected universe, but I haven't found anything that covers these unanswered plot treads.
to be fair I haven't read all of her novels and didn't look super hard, and I would be super thankful if anyone knows what novel continues the cosmic horror invading our universe plot line?
