Synopsis

MIGHT MAKES RIGHT.

Wu Jian comes from a small clan eking out a living in the countryside. Despite being the clan heir, he is bullied for being cowardly and weak. In a world where the strength of a person's cultivation determines their lot in life, weakness is not allowed, and those who possess it are often stamped out.

But Wu Jian doesn't want to remain weak. He doesn't want to be a coward. He wants to be strong. Witness the rise of one young man who, with the help of his childhood friend, will face adversity, forge new bonds of love and friendship, and gain the strength needed to protect his loved ones and find meaning in his life.

It all begins here.

I read until the last chapter released, so I got a good idea of the novel.

I really like this story, and nowadays it's the only one in the Wuxia (Chinese) style that I follow, because it doesn't follow the common mistakes and clichés that this genre has.

The characters are charismatic and human (they are not perfect) which makes the reading more interesting and unusual for this genre. Even more so as the characters mature over time, especially Wu Jian (Main Character/MC) who at the beginning is a weakling and a coward (but it's natural, he's very young and the younger brother, whoever has a younger brother knows that being beaten is normal, with due proportions), but he matures quickly and logically because things don't just happen out of nowhere, they have a reason to happen.

The MC is not that cliché of a virgin character who doesn't know how to deal with women, here he learns how to deal with and wants to have a more intimate relationship, like any normal man. His behavior adds more realism to the story and avoids the shonem and wuxia cliché (most of them look like a eunuch lol).

And the women in the novel are the highlight... they are all charismatic and mature over time too, each having their strengths and weaknesses, and they are useful to the story. They are not that trophy woman cliché (with no value apart from beauty/status), which only serve to be beautiful and generate conflicts for the MC because of it.

I consider myself a veteran reader (although I still have a lot to read, my Kindle list says so), I've read from Wuxia novels, to Japanese and Korean novels, to more traditional books like A Song of Fire and Ice. I consider the writing good and it's easy to read. I don't have trouble keeping pace and even though English is not my mother tongue, I rarely ever find myself having to Google words I don't know (except for distance measurements in Chinese, but now I've memorized it lol). Of course, the story isn't perfect, but even A Song of Fire and Ice has its flaws too, nothing is perfect, but I have no doubts in saying that Severing Time and Space is one of my favorite stories right now.

Good points: Well written, with decent~good characters, and a nice romance. The meek protagonist also gets a decent development after surpassing his first rival and starts to make decisions by himself. There's also an interesting use of an important character acting as a useful seer, something quite rare in those days.

Bad points: cliche of enemies never being punished for 'lack of proof' or 'face' bs, every other faction gathers against the MC yet the adults on his side notice nothing (with an ex-pro assassin within them, yeah, ridiculous), the power-level is COMPLETELY all over the place - with cultivators adults being incapable of reacting to a non-cultivator kid's speed but being able to 'appear before he knew it' - or a ret*rded tournament age restriction to avoid having cultivator fighting the kids, only for one to appear out of nothing to cripple the MC (AND LEAVE WITHOUT PROBLEMS).

Despite the good points, I don't recommend this to anyone. It is too frustrating to see the same revolting stuff of other works being repeated even before the MC starts cultivating.

The enemies are immortal cockroaches with myriad cards and allies on their hands, the allies of the MC are utterly useless and heartless to his mental or physical condition (better off as an orphan than with those trash parents of his), meanwhile, the difference in power-speed-means in cultivation was blasted over even before the MC started... and I don't want to see what more the author will come with to restrict/slow/punish the MC for daring to breath.

    This is some good sh*t.

It has all the tropes and the plot armour but it is so well written that it avoids most of the usual plot holes that plague xianxia and cultivation novels.

The female love interests have actual personality and they are written so well that they feel real, not the one dimensional characters that I got used to reading.

The MC is the usual in most novels. Good hearted, Talented, Hardworking, but the execution is well done. The character writing is leagues ahead of the usual Chinese character writing.

I've read a lot of Chinese novels specifically cultivation  novels and my god, most them are just bad.

Gotta give credit where it is due, I'll be throwing money at you in the foreseeable future.

4.6 Stars [Round Up] (4 Stars, +.3 fresh bonus [Giving me something slightly new, from a genre that I'm very familiar with], +.3 potential bonus [Very Curious on how the story is going to develop])
    (Made at Chapter 168)

I've read quiet a few cultivation stories.... Okay a lot, especially during the earlier periods of my time reading stories on the internet. I don't read too many anymore but I do keep an eye on open.

Severing Time & Space. The powerset of the MC and main cast of is also interesting enough. Nothing so out of the ordinary.

    Powers and abilities:

    Spoiler

MC gets simple space manipulation powers, which while not uncommon (in these type of stories) its used interesting enough. While the main female lead has time powers, which while time powers can be broken, confusion or just not work. They really well implemented in this story, being foresight.

    [collapse]

It avoids some annoying common tropes of the genre. Not saying it doesn't use them all but it is a very interesting take on this type of story. Mc's initial drive for power isn't for some reason like for revenge or prove them wrong, just his girl friend going. (Hey, cultivation world, being strong kind of dictates things, so someone will try to steal me because of that) Which is one of the most valid reasons someone has had in cultivation story to start cultivating.

But overall I like the main cast, and I'm interested in how the story is going to develop.

So far; a competent xianxia story. Grammar and style are very good. The main characters have good personalities to them which make their interactions satisfying to read. The harem is handled quite well and doesn't grate on me as they often do, but I hope there's not going to be more love interests than the 3 we've seen. On the other hand, the antagonists have been very tropey and one dimensional - I hope the author has plans to break out of usual xianxia trappings and write something a bit different, as I've been able to predict more or less the whole plot thus far. The protagonist is quite different compared to a typical xianxia protagonist in that he's a bit more sensitive and thoughtful, so I hope the villains can be given better characterisation. Also, I hope the Cultivation system get fleshed out a bit more in time and made more bespoke.

Reccomended for any fans of xianxia. If you've not read any like stories this one wouldn't be a bad one to start with - it's fairly light on jargon or complicated cultivation systems and written in English natively. If you like litrpg or YA fantasy the xianxia genre would likely appeal to you.
