Status: chapter 12: one good night

Warning, this is not a good review, I will make another after chap 100 ! I just wanted to make part of smt. The gender bender. Every book should have it's brand, and for this one it's the manner the tag is used. It's well done and unique ! It's good, alright, but I feel inconfortable with how the protagonist is trying his all to not look male. It's just... idk, it feels forced a lot, like how people sometimes lies to themselves to keep a thing in them sealed or hidden even to them. But it's part of the story, I suppose, and it gives it a soul. So 5 stars.

This story is great! It's a non-modern fantasy-world setting in which humans coexist with other species, but demons are highly feared and aggressively hunted by a quasi-governmental/powerful church organization. As the summary indicates, the protagonist ends up being reincarnated from a human to a demon (and back to their same world - no isekai stuff here), and this is the story of how they go about dealing with that change, finding friends and trying to figure out who or what was behind the events that led to her death and the death of others.

    Good points about the story:

    • The quality of the writing is great.
    • The characterization is great - I really felt like I knew all the cast of characters.
    • Many stories feel like they don't have a great deal of variety in the settings. This story takes us into all kinds of diverse landscapes and regions of the world, which is fun. There's a lot of creativity invested there, and I've greatly enjoyed the mental journey across all kinds of interesting places.
    • It's not particularly grimdark (despite the title), but at the same time it's not nothing but fluffy slice-of-life - it's a nice balanced story with a plot, conflicts, and moments that run the emotional gamut of fluffy cuteness to serious life-and-death business. Nothing feels too overdone or one-dimensional.
    • It's weird that I even need to list this as a good point, but no characters have done anything that strike me as flagrantly stupid over and over again.... sadly this seems to be a thing I see in a lot of fiction, so, worth mentioning - no head-slappingly stupid characters that do stupid things just to create low-effort 'conflict'.

    Things that could be better:

    • The MC is a powerful demon who is strong and has magical capabilities, and they are surrounded by people who can do magic, but the details of how that all works are extremely fuzzy. The MC also doesn't immediately sit down and poke at their magic and figure out a path to greatness/etc. While some stories are practically tabletop rpg rulebooks with a bit of narrative coating, this is the reverse - a well-developed world/characters/story that isn't particularly concerned with the details of how everything works 'under the hood' (so far). I personally like more of that sort of thing, but maybe that's not everyone. At any rate, enjoy the (good) story for what it is, but don't expect one of those stories in which someone min-maxes the 'system', etc.

    Things to be aware of:

The MC is a transgender (human) woman (pre-transition, but out to a friend) prior to their reincarnation. Some stories on this site with the transgender tag are largely about that topic. I've loved many of those stories, but in this case it's a fairly minor plot point that only really comes up in the beginning and not much afterwards (so far anyway). And that's fine too of course - just adding a note, so readers who are or aren't in the mood for a gender-focused sort of story know what's going on.

Sovereign of Wrath is a great number of things, but first and foremost it is a broad, sweeping revenge journey across a fantasy world that teems with life and character. Following a woman spurned by a despotic church and its' executioners, she is saved by an ironic twist of fate. With renewed strength of arms and magic, she sets off on a journey to avenge her love, her family, and herself. But as she swiftly discovers, she cannot bring her vengeance to those who wronged her with strength alone, and so she works to forge a united front against those who destroyed her life.

Each character encountered by the cast on their travels could well be a core piece of another narrative if our perspective were just slightly shifted in another direction. Each location has a unique texture and history that the reader may freely immerse themselves in. Exciting action and explosive set-pieces punctuate emotional arcs that are well defined and clearly telegraphed. The theming treads the lines between a grim heaviness and lighthearted hope that is intoxicating to invest yourself within.

    While I could spend several paragraphs singing the praises of this story, from superb use of foreshadowing, to well-narrated prose, to a solid grasp on pacing, it's easier to simply say;

    It is worth reading.

Excellent story with a memorable setting and endearing cast that even leads to some sympathy towards even some antagonists. I'm genuinely rooting for our main girls who have had to deal with so much nonsense it's insane; I've binged this over a short period of time and I've had a blast doing it.

Starts kinda sad but you should follow through to see excellent character growth and worldbuilding.

This story is top shelf. Tbh I'm having a hard time writing a review because there isn't just one thing the author does right, it's great writing all the way down. Prose is good, characters are fun, pacing keeps me invested, and there are plenty of mysteries to continue to unravel.

This story caught and held me, and I seriously love it when that happens, because it's rare. The world is rich and well thought out, the plot is driving and bold and *ambitious*, and most of all, the cute and tender interactions between some of the characters as they grow to slowly love and trust each other, despite not really having *any* reason to, sealed the deal. I'm such a sucker for when writers describe a character's eyes softening at the sight of another character's vulnerability.  Seriously, when characters start out suspicious and then can't help melting gradually and slowly and falling for each other and it shouldn't be plausible but they make me believe it?!? So cool. Gotta love it. It's difficult to pull off and I struggle with it myself as a writer but this was such a delightful, delicious, yummy treat to stumble on.
