Synopsis

An ancient evil stirs in the kingdom of Avaraline, and the fate of all life in a world blessed by magic hangs in the balance. The Guilds and Clans, who hold the power of the lands, are ill equipped to deal with the unknown threat, with corruption spreading through their ranks.

Not that this is of any consequence to Izen, a young man struggling to survive in a dying village, and Myne, a talented young Dragon rider seeking to prove herself. That is until the infamous Witch is sensed near his village and Izen becomes intertwined in world of the Dragon riders. Literally, with the magic awakening in him too. The complication, is that only females can be riders.

[The first half of chapter one desperately needed an update to fix some issues and match my more recent writing style, and this has now been done. The rest of the novel will not be changing (apart from some minor edits). A.k.a, it is all good to read as is :)]

Status: chapter 5 – rescue mission (part 1)

Note unmarked spoilers below (I'd mark them but scribblehub only lets you use spoiler tags once per review for some vs reason) blame scribble not me

As a side note I dropped it because of mind control which seriously hate and am reviewing it as if that never happened. Normally that would significantly effect my rating but since I was kinda a d*ck about it cause I had a bad week I'm excluding that from my review as way of apology.

With that out of the way onto the review.

For reference my scale is as follows

    • 1 star trash tier
    • 2 star has a lot of flaws but is still readable
    • 3 stars average
    • 4 stars great
    • 5 stars perfect or near perfect

    The start: 5 stars

Not original but well executed (nothing wrong with a lack of originality IMO)

The first chapter starts with the female lead chasing a evil witch the protagonist decides to play hero and save her not realizing what's going on and gets his ass shoved into prison, escapes yada yada. We've seen it before but words cannot do justice to get its execution which in my opinion is way more important than originality.

    Characters 3 stars

the protagonist and female lead are adorable and have good chemistry but the villains drag the story down a bit. The witch is interesting you get just enough information about her to keep you interested but not enough to break the air of mystery surrounding her which is very hard to accomplish while not done perfectly I've only seen a few franchises the manage to pull that off.

the masks for example feel far to extreme to be realistic, they're mindlessly focused on their own desires to the point of ignoring even the barest minimum procotions making them feel more like beasts than people. For people with the moniker mask and their role of blending in they feel to driven by their desires to properly fulfill their purpose.

    World building - I'd give it a 6 if I could

Huge props to the author for making a great world the magic system feels unique and interesting without going to far out there, the way the new world and old world were handled felt fresh and new even if it's been done before.

    Pacing 4

The pacing was good speed wise but felt unnatural. It might just be me being used to shorter chapters but I'd say if the chapters were split in half and the multi part chapters turned into mini arcs it would be better. That's more nitpicking than anything so I'll give it a 4.

    Combat 3

A lot of the fights felt to short or a bit rushed that's more of my preference than anything but this is more of a character driven story than a combat driven one so I'll cut the author some slack here.

    Status: epilogue

I have a lot of comments, I waited until the book was done before binge reading it and the first 50 something chapters of the followup.

The story is well written, there are some grammar errors, so if she wants to publish the story she needs a good editor to fix a few minor errors. However at the same time the story is top tier, and the Setting is absolutely fascinating, it is also Fantasy meets Soft Sci-Fi. It becomes very obvious in the second book.

I think mogust has a good chance of becoming a well-respected author if she keeps it up at her current pace. Which is the only reason why I am giving a review. I might give high marks often, but I only rate that which I think has earned a rating.
