Synopsis

Susumu was a young man who was born to a well-off, traditional family in Japan. He was born with a unique face which got him labeled as 'the little yakuza', despite his kindly nature. A brave girl stood up to this "demon" and as a result an extraordinary friendship was born. Susumu fell in love with her, and you might think things would go perfectly, but no.

Later on, Susumu came to lose his identity, his mind, and his humanity. After a wild several days, he gained far more.

Meanwhile murders had been committed by a shadow-cloaked individual. Only the spiritual and yokai of Tokyo can handle this case.

This is a thrilling mystery story full of fluff, crazy comedy, magic and many twists. Welcome to my third novel!

      Status: the whole story
      Jan 1, 2020

Rellawing’s writing on No Face No Life is humorous and well thought out. It is easy to fall in love with the characters and understand their motivations as well as their distinct personalities. There is a deeper mystery in the story that follows Susumu around, constantly keeping you guessing at what it is.

A thing to note: It was written with a clear style in mind, much like you would find in a comedy style anime, the writing here reflects that same style. It is a piece of the writing I don’t think the story could do without, injecting humor in all the right places without overshadowing the mystery or being an unwelcome thing. No Face No Life is well worth the read.

      Status: the entire work

This is my first time that I am writing an review and I was also more or less forced to do it by a certain huggly cat based on her profile pic as I was one of the main editors of the story.

Anyway, what I can say about the story? It is unconventional for sure. A certainly unique based on an unconventional premise and sometimes awkward set of characters, which isn't something inherently bad.

No, in fact, I would say it is one of the great strengths of this novel that the characters retain a fairly realistic nuance  throughout the chapters and exhibit a sense of closeness I rarely found in other novels thanks to the frequent use of introspections. Maybe sometimes even too often.

But the point is, contrary to many other novels in this kind of genre and the internet community as a whole, the characters of the story feel alive and not like cheap imitations of your well-known pre-made cardboard templates types. Susu and company are in the truest sense characters.
