My god, this is the most obnoxious set of characters I've ever read in a story.

Synopsis of the first few chapters: Jason, a jobless loser who dreams of making it big in Wall Street, gets involved in an alleyway where a goblin is munching on a woman. A fight ensues, Jason wins, gets the title of First Killer, and then begins his fight against invading monsters. ergo title drop.

Sounds like a dope story no? Too bad the author ruined it with terrible characters and logic.

Story: Right from the gate, you're introduced to someone who clearly has anger issues. Throwing his tie away in the streets, being an ass to a cab driver, and generally making an absolute buffoon of himself. Clearly the author is trying to make him into the most unlikeable character.

Flash forward, after the fight with the goblin and failing to save the woman. Later, he plans to buy a weapon to defend himself in case of any more monster appearing. Now think for yourself, what would you get for a weapon? An axe, a sword, a gun, a stun gun, a shovel, a spear, or even a knife? For this MC, he got a sword, but unfortunately, the absolute weeb

      Spoiler

got a KATANA! The worst weapon in the world for an absolute beginner and can even be broken by simple mishandling, which does happen in a battle. So far, the dude is a complete moron.

Not what about how he uses his newfound abilities? For one instance he infers that he can obtain skills by practicing certain skills repeated, which he then goes to a Dojo to obtain the swordsmanship ability. Good, no complaint there. What's infuriating, is the complete lack of use of his stat points once obtaining them. Keeping a few points on there for a boast when you need them is completely understandable, having 80~ points, and refusing to spend a majority of them until you're losing/dying is the idiocy that even a normal person wouldn't achieve.

      [collapse]

Now here are some other things that I've noticed...

      • An abnormal amount of female interactions with the MC. A clear preference from the author because every other male in the chapters I read has fewer lines than female characters.
      • Spoiler

You're telling me a dude who went into a hospital looking like he was wrecked by a goblin and bitten by it, can get away with an excuse like "It WAS a rACCOon ThAT BIte mE" without any more questions?

        [collapse]
      • Most characters seem to be absolute scumbags, MC included.
        Spoiler

Gina blackmails MC into being her pack-mule, the hotel owner is killing anybody who gets near the top, hotel manager is being an absolute prick, female dojo master is a douche too everybody enrolling for classes.

        [collapse]
Seriously what is up with this, does the author even know how to create conflict without making a character a troglodyte to justify retribution?
      • Spoiler

MC's cousin is critically injured elsewhere, and he has the time to wait for his ex-girlfriend to change his clothes for HALF AN HOUR?!

        [collapse]
      • Spoiler

The MC has an implied incestuous relationship with his cousin Gina... what???

        [collapse]

      Characters

Jason: A dude with serious mental issues and obvious faults. Does this make him normal like how other pretend him to be? NO, despite understanding the graveness of his situation, he always manages to mess it up by failing to use his resources well.

      Spoiler

He knows that he can obtain titles by accomplishing certain tasks first, but he doesn't realize it until he fails to get one for his first point in Energy Resist?

      [collapse]
that's not even beginning with his personality, which makes the most unlikeable person I've come across in the stories I've read.

Gina: useless damsel in distress, that can only cry "jaSon!!!!!" while MC fights monsters.

      Spoiler

she also has an implied incestuous relationship with MC.

      [collapse]

Maria: ex-girlfriend of MC, apparently still has a crush on him for unexplainable reasons, a slightly useful person.

      Spoiler

Also has jealousy against Gina, because MC prioritized saving her?

      [collapse]

Any other character: Dies soon after being introduced/ is only relevant for a single or few chapters/ is forgettable/ or is MC's extended family that mostly dies when the monster invaded.

      Overall Assessment

An infuriating webnovel with little creativity and a shamble for the character cast. I really wish I never read this.

      I freaking love this novel!

I have to disagree with the comments in the chapters and reviews about Jason being stupid. This is one of the charms of this novel, about a NORMAL person making mistakes. So far the author has skirted the thin line between making the MC a typical, ruthless expert we see in many KR novels, and incompetent idiot. Yes, Jason makes mistakes, a lot of them, because he's ordinary. He's caught up in a situation beyond comprehension, and he makes fewer mistakes because of his fondness for computer games (moral of the story: kids, play more computer games. :D). But he seldom makes the same mistake TWICE, and that's what we find so realistic.

Yes, he screws up, he's human. But he tries to learn about this new world, prepares and grinds his skills when he has a chance, and tries to make good decisions in battle. He feels guilty, he anguishes over his past mistakes, he moves forward on his own. He's not two dimensional like most KR survival genre MC's, he prioritizes his family and himself, but he knows when to retreat, and when to attack.

I truly love this series, and you will too. Read NAU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Addendum to Review, 4/3/20:

      The author shows, doesn't tell.

Jason is suffering from PTSD, Survivors Guilt, and he's ashamed he wasn't strong enough to save those important to him. Family, Ex. I interpret his massacre of the jewel thieves due to his frustration at not being strong enough to take out the monsters with his current strength, so he kills humans, who are mass murderers, that deserve it. He denies he's a savior, because he deeply wants to be one, and he's ashamed of his cowardice. The author shows this, doesn't tells this. He doesn't tell his parents he's Awakened, because he's afraid they'll blame him for all the people he failed to save, because he blames himself. Again, show, not tell.

I really can't recommend this novel enough. Go read nau, if you're interested in a deeply flawed, deeply HUMAN MC, who wants to do the right thing, is afraid of losing the only things he still cares about (family) and he's trying hard to be brave, to be the hero he thinks he should be, but is terrified of becoming. GO READ NAU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The MC seems normal and reacts like most people would and the writing is pretty good. The premise is great and though not unique, it is still a fun setting. I see a harem building though, please don't romance the cousins, it is just weird.

I can see now that the MC is making more stupid decisions and is saving his points like a madman, I'm hoping there is an explanation for this later like his stamina affecting him, but if not then the MC is getting less likeable by the chapter.

MC is imperfect and author does a good job of showing his initial inexperience and struggle to live. One of my favorite current reads and look forward to how it develops

I really like this novel, it has somenthing that quite a number of other novels around the web miss, it's real! Most of the other novels are all about MC that from start to end do everything perfect, always come out on top and seem like they have already read their own novel and have lived it again and again until being able to do everything with closed eyes... or they are some kind of superman awaken from chapter 2... this one has a MC, that logically, do not understand what's happening, what his ability are all about and miss some common sense... which is legit, most people in the world miss it and really little number of them would do better than the MC if they are put in such a scenario, most of them would be even more incompetent, panic, die\end with a trauma... end of the story.

In a way the change of the MC during the first 40 chapter are already to the point to not be able to call him an incompetent anymore and to make him some "badass know what a war is" that in a way or the other will survive... which is more probable of some normie that go in an hell of a battlefield and come out a superhero. Moreover, most of the novels about monsters from other dimensions end with a situation where the monsters are stopped at some point, divided by hazard, with people that start to hunt them and little by little grow strong, a system of selling the corpses and the "hunters" that become filthy rich... like hell something like that could really happen, it would be a war, an all over the world war with so much deads and no hope to stop the advance of the monsters. For these reasons I think that this is a great novel and I hope to see the end of it.P.s. "Most characters seem to be absolute scumbags, MC included" there are quite a number of scumbags in the world, in some places there are more than others,   let's remember that the more competitive an ambient is, the more such people are found, and Wall Street? yep, super competitive place with a super number of scumbags. (real)

I really love your novel "the man who killed the first monster" but you really have to improve on the personality of the MC am not asking you to make him evil or ruthless, am simply asking you to make him a realist wasting a whole 30mins waiting for your ex girlfriend to change her clothes while your cousin is in a critical condition (heavy bleeding both internal and external) and healing your ex girlfriend while the same monster that attacked her is busy attacking over 20 other people including your cousins aunts and uncles I don't know what to say about that. The MC is not a block I just don't do what to call him he know you get titles by being the first to achieve things in the world but he chooses not to explore with his points he boards them even when he has 2X the normal amount just imagine him have 80+ points but his stamina, dexterity and energy is still in single digits. Am ready to rate you give stars if you killed off Maria permanently no coming back as an undead, zombie, vampire, summons or whatever and also fix his personality

I like it its a good story but the MC is meh... why dont he use his point its basic knowledge for gamer’s and he says he is one I don’t understand because a lot of bad stuff would be easy to solve if he use is point but he dont do it why??

So this stupidity cost more life and effort in each battle and one star

Good story, good energy, good flow.

Interesting powers, and the system and growth are both understandable and satisfying.

The grammar is not good, but the story itself makes up for it. It would be 5 star if not for the constant grammar issues.

Author - I like your story enough that I would be happy to offer a first pass on grammar/word choice check. Let me know if this is welcome.

      Story is horrible:

      No effort put into backgrounds

No continuity in anything other than MC being a jerk and constantly doing what author showed he should know not to do

Everything is forced from character interactions, plot, and situations

Review has nothing to do with the poor grammar as I am reading several other stories that have terrible grammar but great plots and stoy telling.

Would recommend avoiding this story until the author rewrites it and fixes all of the broken mechanics and puts a little more effort into the chapters.

      Good luck author
