I have enjoyed the initial chapters of "A Gladiator's Life". It is more grim than "A Soldier's Life" which is set in this same universe. Having read some of the author's other works, I might have a contextual advantage and a predisposition to liking the universe, magic system, and physical combat. Even so, I think you will enjoy it as well.
Very well written, but too grimdark for me. While I'm not going to continue, if you like this style of story, the author really invokes images with economy of prose so you feel for the MC.
