That evening, back at the cottage, Endra cooked. A simple stew — root vegetables, a few strips of dried meat, herbs he couldn't name that made the broth smell of warmth and earth. She served it without ceremony and they ate in a silence that was not uncomfortable.

After the meal, she looked at him across the table.

"Tomorrow," she said, "we work the garden. The beds need turning before the frost comes. And there are cuttings I need to prepare."

"Not the forest?"

"Not tomorrow. The forest gave us enough today."

He nodded. The stew sat warm in his stomach. The fire crackled. Through the window the garden was dark, the white flowers barely visible, swaying without wind.

She did not go upstairs immediately. Instead she settled into the chair by the fire — the only padded chair in the cottage, worn at the arms, with a blanket folded over the back — and pulled the blanket across her knees. The walking stick leaned against the armrest. She looked, for the first time since he had met her, old. Not weak — never weak — but tired in the way old things are tired, the way a tree is tired at the end of a long season.

The fire popped. A log shifted. Sparks drifted up the chimney.

"Sit," she said, without looking at him.

He sat on the floor near the fire, his back against the wall. The warmth was good on his side — the wound under the Auralis needles hummed, a low ache that the heat seemed to ease.

For a while neither of them spoke. Neither of them needed to. It was the silence of two people who had spent a day together in a forest and had run out of the things you say to fill space. What was left was the silence you sit in when you are tired and warm and the fire is doing the talking.

Then Endra said, without preamble: "Do you know the story of the Maiden of Ashes?"

He shook his head.

"It's an old story. Very old. The kind of story grandmothers tell in villages like this one, when the fire is low and the children are almost asleep. Nobody knows if it's true. Nobody knows where it comes from. But it survives, the way certain weeds survive — too stubborn to die, even when the garden is burned."

She settled deeper into the chair.

"Once, a long time ago, there was a girl. Beautiful, they say — though the stories disagree on the kind of beauty. Some say she was golden-haired. Others say dark. It doesn't matter. What matters is that she was gifted. She had a mind that could see things before they happened, a heart that could read the pain in others the way a scholar reads a book. The kind of girl who should have been claimed by one of the Six at her Awakening — should have been wrapped in light, given a name, given a purpose."

Endra paused.

"But when the crystal touched her, nothing happened. No light. No name. No god came forward. She was a Tainted Soul."

The fire crackled. Dante said nothing.

"Now. In the stories, this is where things get dark. Because a Tainted Soul in those days was not just ignored. She was punished. The Church of the time — and the stories are clear about this, even if nobody says it aloud anymore — the Church believed that Tainted Souls were not accidents. They were warnings. Signs of divine displeasure. Signs that something in the bloodline had offended the gods. And the proper response to a warning was to remove it."

Her voice didn't rise for any of it.

"So they came for the girl. The priests. The judges. The good and the faithful. They came with torches and with scripture and with the absolute conviction of people who believe they are doing the right thing. They burned her house. They drove her family into the roads. They would have burned her too, if she hadn't run."

"Where did she run?"

"Into the dark." Endra's voice dropped. "Into the places where the light of the Six doesn't reach. The edges. The cracks between the things that are officially there. And in the dark, she found something — or something found her. The stories disagree on this too. Some say she stumbled into a cave and heard a voice. Some say a bird came to her — a crow, or a raven, depending on who tells it. Some say she simply walked until her feet bled and then sat down on a rock and cried, and the rock answered."

(A crow.)

The thought was very quiet in his head. He did not move.

"What answered," Endra continued, "was not one of the Six. It was something older. Or perhaps not older — perhaps the same age, but forgotten. A presence that the world had once known and had been made to unknow. A god without a name, without a church, without followers. A god who had been — and this is the part the grandmothers always lower their voices for — a god who had been kind once, before the kindness was taken from him."

She looked at the fire.

"He took the girl in. Not as a servant. Not as a weapon. As a child. The stories say he gave her what the Six had refused — not a Blessing, exactly, but something close to it. A purpose. A place. A voice that would carry in the dark where no other voice could reach. He taught her what he knew, which was a great deal, and he asked nothing in return except that she remember."

"Remember what?"

"That he existed. That someone, somewhere, knew his name even if the name could not be spoken. That the world had not always been the way it was. That there had been seven, once, before there were six."

The fire was very low now. Endra's face was mostly in shadow, lit only by the last of the embers.

"The girl grew up. She became — the stories use different words. A healer. A wanderer. A ghost who appeared in villages when people needed help and vanished before anyone could ask her name. She was beautiful and she was old and she was young and she was none of these things, depending on when you met her and what you needed her to be. She served the nameless god not out of duty but out of love — the love of a daughter for a father who had saved her when no one else would."

She paused.

"And the nameless god loved her back. Which is the cruelest part of the story, because gods who love are gods who can be hurt, and gods who can be hurt are gods who do terrible things when the people they love are threatened."

The fire popped once. Sparks rose toward the chimney.

"The story doesn't have an ending," Endra said. "It just — stops. The way old stories do. The maiden walks into a village. She helps someone. She leaves. She walks into another village. She helps someone else. She leaves again. Over and over. For a very long time. And nobody ever knows who she was, or where she came from, or why her eyes were always a little too sharp for her face."

She looked at Dante.

Her eyes, in the last light of the fire, were blue-green and sharp as knives.

"It's just a folk tale," she said. "Grandmothers and firesides and almost-sleeping children. Don't read too much into it."

Dante sat with the story for a long time after she finished. Something about it sat in his chest in a place that was not quite comfortable. Not the content — the shape of it. A girl rejected by the gods. A presence in the dark that took her in. A life spent at the edges, helping and vanishing, helping and vanishing.

(That sounds like —)

(But she can't mean —)

(Can she?)

He looked at her. She was watching the fire, and whatever was behind her eyes stayed there.

"Nonna Endra."

"Hm?"

"The vial you gave me in the forest. How did you make it?"

A long second. Then a small smile cracked the seams of her face.

"Interested?"

"Very."

"We'll see," she said. "Tomorrow. If you earn it."

She stood up, folding the blanket back over the chair. Her walking stick found her hand. She made for the stairs.

At the bottom step she paused.

"The story I told you. About the girl and the dark."

"Yes?"

"Remember the shape of it. Not the details — I probably got half of them wrong. Just the shape. A girl who was thrown away by the world and caught by someone who didn't have to catch her. There are worse shapes to carry."

She tapped her way up the stairs.

"Sleep well, boy."

"Goodnight, Nonna Endra."

He lay awake a long while after that, turning the shape of the story over in the dark, getting closer to a thought he wasn't ready to finish.
