. Robert he should have had a higher status in the knights academy with his sister as a mage. The assassin was a fencer who we dont know his name, but fencing could be 1 of those classes that you need to be from a noble family to get only other fencer we see is arthur a noble.. the assassin could have been from a minor family or he could be a incompetent younger brother or a cousin of the first wife of rolands father. or 1 of his father enemys who wanted to take out 1 of his sons.
If you mean the (fencer) man who first tried to kill him as a child, it was stated that he was a knight of the household, albeit disgruntled from being stuck watching a kid out in the middle of nowhere. He was even disillusioned into thinking that the son being killed on his watch would not hurt his standing in the household.
And I use the term 'assassin' pretty loosely here. He was a drunk, disgruntled idiot who attempted to kill Roland. He was manipulated into trying to kill Roland, after being tasked to keep tabs on him for 6(?) months. I think the only people who knew where Roland was were: his dad, the head butler, and this guard (assuming he was the same person who drove him out to that town).
He was still using his real name, while roland was a failed mage to get into a mage academy he was still a mage and that could be a threat to other nobles? and his brothers.
