Grandma's secret!

Ch. 1
Heather was packing again those threats we're back they seem to come every time she settles in to a town and gets to know the people there, her son hated to just up and leave in the middle of the night and especially if he made a friend, Josh her son was just 7 years old so he didn't quite understand why they was always moving around but to be quite honest she didn't know why either the day after her grandma Becca died was when she started to get the threats, then one day she was on her way to get Josh at school he had just started first grade wow that was a year ago Heather couldn't believe she and Josh had been on the run for a year they had lived in six places the next place would make seven, well anyways! She had to hurry up, where was that son of hers “Josh honey we have to go what's taking you so long to pack up?" She listened and heard nothing then she started to panic, what if they had grabbed him like the letter she got said that was tied to a rock and thrown thru her living room window, then in came Josh dragging his suit case " I'm trying to hurry Mommy but this is heavy" Heather chuckled " OK pip squeak I'll take that one if you'll take mine deal?" And Josh dropped his suit case with a thud and said, " deal Mommy phew that was heavy" Josh always had the heaviest suitcase because he carried all his stuffed animals in there the ones her grandma Becca had made for him he wouldn't leave them behind, but Heather packed light She had to in case they had to fly fast
                 Chase was late again for the debriefing at the precinct, his Sarge was gonna have his hide for sure this time but just in case he was bringing proof of why he was late, Sarge had a weakness for puppies and kittens and he had rescued these puppies from a storm drain there mother was attached by the pit bull all the police in Riverside had been trying to catch he was a mean one and cleaver he had killed over twelve dogs twenty four cats and had put four people in the hospital he had to be caught there was no question about it he was a danger to this peaceful town the most crime there had been in a long time was this dog none of them could catch they was starting to get a reputation for being a bunch of losers but then as he turned on to park Street he saw a woman and a little boy he assumed was her son putting a suit case into her van and the look she was sporting told him she was running from something then he saw it a dark figure behind them no two dark figures and they had guns he had to intervene so he pulled up and shot out of his truck and ran up to Heather and i will get your bags your being watched get into my truck now Heather looked like she was going to pass out so he said "look I'm a cop" and he pointed to his belt which had his badge on it and she seemed to relax a little now and Chase grabbed both suitcases and got behind them and followed them to his truck and after they had been seat buckled he threw the bags into the bed of his truck those two goons started to shoot at them chase dove in the truck and took off speeding down the road and by the time they had reached the precinct those goons were on his tail so he just couldn't take the chance on stopping so he shot past and turned the corner and said "hang on guys this is going to get a little rough!" And as he sped up he turned into the woods where only he knew there was a trail there and cut the engine and shut of the lights and whispered, " get down and don't make a sound!!!"
Heather didn't argue so she took off their seat belts and they both got down on the floor of the truck and waited and she noticed Josh was not shaking like he usually did and looked down and saw him petting three puppies and despite their predicament Josh didn't seem fazed about being chased or getting shot at she was proud of him so very proud, Josh might have been born out of a bad marriage one that was so volatile and so harsh but he was her pride and joy and his name came from her Dad that was his name, Josh's father had died before she even knew she was pregnant with him and the day she found out she was blessed with him as her son all the pain and memories from her bad marriage had just melted away, till they was gone, she looked up and saw Chase coming back to the truck and thought when did he get out of the truck? Well no matter he was helping them that's all she cared about, and she didn't want to think about what would have happened to them if he hadn't of been driving by she shuddered at the thought then Chase spoke to her and she jumped practically out of her skin " oh I'm sorry miss um miss.... Well I don't know your name actually, I've seen you around town” then he stretched out his hand and said, "I'm chase Brown and you are?"
               Chase waited for her to get her barrings and finally she stretched out her hand and said, " I'm Heather Redford and this is my son Josh” Chase waited for her to say more but she didn't and he thought will she had to be scared so he took a deep breath and said " why were those men chasing you Heather?" He saw the fear return in her eyes and said "well you can explain on the way buckle up and wait here I'm going to see if they are out there before we come out of these woods" and before she could respond he walked away from her and was thinking he was going to have to do a little digging of his own to find out where she was from and why those men were shooting at her and her son he couldn't imagine what they had done or gotten into that had those guys after them,
After he checked the road on both sides he jogged back to where they were and found them fast asleep and he smiled and quietly he got into the truck and thankfully the engine was quiet he started to back out of there keeping his lights off and had the chance to really look at her she was a vision of beauty no makeup but Rosy cheeks and red hair with blue eyes he’d never seen anyone with red hair and blue eyes before red always had green eyes but she was lovely anyways she must have been five ft. two or three and while she wasn't thin she really wasn’t big either but he didn't like them thin with nothing to hold on to..... Wait a minute why was he thinking that he didn't even know her shaking his wayward thoughts he concentrated on getting back to the precinct but just as he was about to turn on to park Street he saw those two goons standing in front of the police station and stopped and backed up and turned around and went back the way he'd come
Pulling out his cell he dialed his Sargent and whispered " yeah Sarge it's me Chase yes I know I'm two hours late yes I have yes if you'd stop and listen I would tell you why!!! " Well chase didn't think he would believe him without a picture so he turned his phone towards them and snapped a pic glad they didn't wake up with the flash and sent it to him and said " there why, yes her name is Heather Redford and that's her son Josh they were being chased by two men with guns, no I picked them up from in front of her place yes I did I lost them in our usual speed trap whoa I'm kidding Sarge I'm joking yes I’m a wise butt ok but I can't there in front of The police steps at least they were a half an hour ago I'm heading out of town now I'm not going to say where I'm going to be the only one who knows where we are... Look I know you’re the Sargent but if they had time to bug... Yes, right ok good I'll keep in touch it might be a few days before... Right I wanna get settled there and find a safe way to communicate with you first... Ok I will... Hey Sarge you know I'm the only qualified cop in this city that can keep her safe... Right ok right by Sarge...I will by" Chase wasn’t about to let these two out of his sight not even for the Sarge cause in all honesty he was the only qualified cop who could keep them safe because of his background in the army and as god as his witness he wasn’t going to let these two down not like...... No, he wouldn't go there ever so he prayed for the courage to do what was necessary in the coming days ahead cause he was going to need it that much he knew and looked over to make sure they were comfortable and seeing that they were he concentrated on driving while looking all around making sure they wasn’t being followed.
             Heather was dreaming those two goons were chasing her and Josh and she was trying to run all while holding Josh's hand and while she could run fast Josh couldn't he wasn't tall for his age and every few feet he'd trip and she had to stop to help him up poor Josh was getting skinned knees and then she tripped over him and she went flying forward and by The time she got up and helped Josh up they were there and grabbed Josh and pushed her down and all she could do was lay there and watch as those two started to take off with Josh flung over one of their shoulders like a sack of potatoes and then she was shaken awake and sat up and started to scream when these hands went over her mouth stopping her from yelling " shh you'll wake up Josh" Heather looked around and saw that she was on a bed in what looked like a log cabin and Josh was next to her sleeping with all three puppies snuggled up next to him she smiles in spite of their situation and looked at Chase and said "where are we?" Getting up carefully so she wouldn't wake him Chase let her out into another large room that looked like a living room with a sofa and recliner to which didn't match and a small flat screen TV complete with what looked like an x box and there was a kitchen off  too the right small with a fridge and stove again not matching a small round table was in the center of the small kitchen she also noticed it was all very clean not what you'd expect from a bachelor or maybe he was married she didn't know last night while he thought she was sleeping she got a chance to look at him and noticing he had a small patch of grey on the hairs at his temples and a goatee neatly trimmed with great big Hazel eyes with blonde hair and a handsome cleft in his chin she was always attracted to a man's cleft she didn't know why but what also caught her eyes were his tight fitting t-shirt showing off his rather large physique, he looked like he could beat up a younger version of Arnold Schwarzenegger and she was for some reason not afraid of him her late husband was a body builder but nowhere near as big, she was thinking she wondered what it would feel like to be wrapped up in his arms and then mentally chastened herself for thinking such foolish thoughts who was she kidding she was well rather big boned and he was physically fit she didn't belong in his world so she drifted off to sleep trying to rid her mind off those thoughts but while she was day dreaming Chase had said something and was waiting for her to respond so she cleared her throat and said "excuse me?" And Chase smirked but repeated what she didn't hear "are you alright you were kinda mumbling in there and shaking did you have a bad dream or something? “She shrugged her shoulders and said “a bad dream is all I'll be fine!" Chase looked like he didn't believe her but said nothing to which she was grateful
               Chase had wanted to go over what was happening to her when she woke up, but she was loudly mumbling in her sleep and all he could make out was "no not Josh please not Josh!" So he knew they was after the kid but why and so clearing his throat he said " I want to know why there after Josh it don't make sense Heather Josh is only a six or seven year old boy, what is going on start at the beginning and leave nothing out, I want to know every detail even the most smallest ones that you think are not relevant they might just be important" Chase knew she knew something but didn't know why she wasn't telling him everything was she hiding something or someone? He was waiting for her to answer and when she didn't he spoke up and a little firmer this time “Heather your son is in danger and you as well and I am the only qualified cop in Riverside who can keep your son and you alive so spill it now!!!" Heather was petrified but knew he was the only cop that can keep her son from getting abducted she didn’t know how she knew that, so she saw no other choice but to tell him and give him the threatening letters she's received they're was six of them and she stuffed them inside her suitcase each time she got one she put it inside there and left them there sighing She said " ok all I got is the threatening letters I received each place I've lived at while on the run, me and Josh have been on the run since my grandma Becca passed away that's when the threatening letters started to show up the first one came the day after the funeral and I dropped everything and moved! And each time I got a letter I moved Riverside makes the sixth place we've moved too! What they want I don't know but it must be something important really important to have them chase us for a year!!!" Heather got the letters and handed them to him and said “they don't say much but they scare me to death!"

           Chase took the letters and thankful she had numbered them read the first one and sucked in a silent breath, it read "give us what your grandma stole from us or your son will pay, and you'll watch!" He read the second one and it said simply " we found you and we want what's ours you can't escape were everywhere!" Chase read the rest of the letters basically they said the same but the last one was a little different it read were tired of chasing you give us the disc; our boss wants it now there's no where you can run were everywhere!!! Give us that disc or JOSH IS DEAD!!!!!!!! Chase put the letters in the pocket of his shirt and cleared his throat and said, “did your grandmother give you those discs?” Chase felt something was wrong so before Heather could say anything he shot up and went around the table and whispered "get Josh and go hide in the closet now" Heather didn't know what to say she didn't even know anything about the discs her grandma never told her anything but before she could say anything he shot up and came around the table she didn't know what was going on but when he whispered in her ear get Josh and go in the closet now she didn't ask questions she just went into the bedroom quietly picked Josh up and went to the closet and placed Josh carefully on the floor and sat beside him closing the door. Heather didn't know what was going on but she was shaking like a leaf she knew that Chase must have heard something she didn't hear anything but with his training in the military she knew that they were trained to hear things that other people couldn't she had done a little digging on him on her cell phone when they was parked in the woods hiding from those men that’s how she knew he was in the military, so she was as quiet as a mouse but then she remembered the puppies she didn't want the puppies to get hurt because Josh would be crushed so quietly she opened up the door went to the bed grabbed all three puppies brought them back to the closet shut the door very quietly placing the puppies next to Josh that way if he woke up and saw the puppies he would not be frightened Heather folded her hands and started to pray with all her might that everything would be okay because she didn't know what was going to happen to them cuz in the coming days she knew things were going to get much worse before they got better!
Chase didn't know what was going on but in his gut he felt something was about to take place and he didn't want her or Josh to be anywhere near it so tiptoeing very quietly to the door he put his ear to it and listened not a whole lot of people can do this except people in the military he hears things other people might not be able to, he heard like leaves rustling! he heard branches breaking and something else but he couldn’t put his finger on what that something else was so very quietly he opened the door glad that he had taken care of that squeak in the door, open it a crack at first then all the way the sight he saw shook him to his very core, outside the door was the head of a deer dripping blood all over the door and in blood obviously of the deer spelled we want the disc now! Before he could shut the door he heard a gasp turning around to see Heather wide-eyed white as a ghost shaking all over quickly shutting the door he ran over to her and hugged her whispering " don't make a sound don't tell Josh he's going to be frightened we will clean this up before he wakes up okay don't worry I will not let anything happen to either of you even if it means my own life This I Promise You!!!”
             Heather swallowed hard and all she could do was nod her head and she went into the kitchen grabbed a pale started filling it with hot water grab some rags and went to the door but Chase stopped her by grabbing her hand gently and whispering " I'll do it you go be with Josh make sure he's not frightened okay " Chase didn't want her to be cleaning that up this was something he didn't want her to have nightmares about the poor girl is already dreaming and he knows exactly how that is with his PTSD so he wanted to make sure he cleaned it up himself the less she saw of violence and blood the better so while he was cleaning it he said a prayer "Lord keep us all safe in the days ahead because I know it's going to be bad very bad"
Chase hadn't prayed a prayer in years oh he still believed in God but after he left the military he stopped he stopped going to church and he stopped praying he wasn't going to go into why I mean there was no sense in it so as he cleaned up all he could say was his prayer over and over again because he needed to he was starting to relive that awful day over and over again in his mind God help him!
