“So why exactly no one had made swords out of mana yet?”
“Because it costs too much mana, even a small marble could threaten one’s life.”
“So someone did have tried it before,” Artus muttered under his breath. “No flying magic swords for me then, plan B it is.”
“What’s plan B- wait, hold that for a second,” Verona told him as she surveyed the darkness outside the wall.
They had been doing this after his shield had been proved better than anything the two other guys had to offer. They had talked about nothing but the random past in the last two days. She got a lot already bottled up all these years.
And it’s not like they could talk all the time. The creatures that come to test the defense were relentless. It would be a nightmare to stay outside the walls. It might be just him, but it felt like the monsters were running away from something else themselves.
A crude spear clanging his shield had proven her senses were right on the mark. A quick [Flame Dart] later, the threat was neutralized. One thumb-sized fiery hole was enough to kill anything, he imagined.
She shot a bunch of them at once to get the rest of the fleeing goblins. The lady blew the smoke coming out of her index finger like it was a gun.
The whole thing is very sexy. Lady Verona made them look like ants being draped with liquid fire. She made it look easy because she OP compared to other defenders.
Another reason he avoided talking to her at any other occasion. He might think using his dick again and played right into her game. He wondered if she knew anything about recreating thermite with magic? Or any other kind of colored flame?
“I know I’ve said this before, but you know how great it is to be able to see where the attack is coming from? I can’t do that with shields all over my face,” Lady Verona scoffed.
“I’m sure the captains have only wanted to keep their heads by keeping you alive,” Artus jibbed in. “Why don’t you learn how to use your [Fire] element defensively?”
“I will, from now on, but I would love to learn the trick from you,” she cajoled.
“You can dream on, my lady,” Artus chuckled.
“Not even after fooling around a few times?” she used it again. “We could make it regular,” she cooed.
She sounded like a purr of a kitten and it got him all the time. He would have agreed if he was still the same person. She is a really delicious MILF.
“Don’t you have a husband, boyfriend or something?”
Her smile suddenly vanished and he could guess the answer already. Four years of fooling around weren’t for nothing, well, until she decided to dump him.
“The kids I have, they aren’t really consensual, if you know what I mean?”
“I know what you mean, and you don’t have to explain it to me if you find it hard.”
“It’s not what you think, Artus, he is just too powerful and the family needed newborns.”
“I don’t want to judge you, Verona, but we always have choices, no matter what.”
“You are... right, as always,” she gave a sad smile.
“Well, not always. I am also a fool who failed to follow my own advice sometimes,” he chuckled. “How do you even get here, girl, you are really far from home.”
“Would you believe it- “
“My lady,” interrupted one of the captains. “You should talk about that with strangers.”
“Well, he is not a stranger, Mafu, he awakened as my old flame, my old love in a past life. I trust him more than anyone else, even my own judgment.”
Artus was more than glad to hear that.
“But people do change my lady,” the guy, Mafu stated.
“You know what, he is right, people DO change,” he said to their surprise. “It's fine if you don’t tell me, but who knows I might know something about the reason you were sent here.”
“He got a point,” said Verona while thinking. “And I think he already figured out why we are here, don’t you, you sneaky bastard?”
“Hey, language, ma’am,” Artus chuckled. “But if I have to guess, is it about a Celestial running around?”
A sword clink at its scabbard made Verona stand in front of him. The captain was still holding a grudge after the small bout they had. Losing a bet against a no leveler had slapped the man’s years of pride pretty hard.
“Touch him, Mafu, and I’ll roast you alive if that is the last thing I’ll do,” she warned with a blue flame engulfing her hands.
The intense heat radiating from her made everyone flinch on their feet. The other captain already held both of his hands up and backed away. Her reaction to the threat had warmed his heart a little.
But it didn’t affect her or him. Artus knew intense heat was radiating from her but it didn’t burn him or he felt any pain. Magic fire is not really fire.
“Are they always on the edge like this? You people should learn to relax a little, but if you want to know more, you have to enlighten me about this Celestial. A trade, how's that captain? You already know that your blade couldn’t make a dent on my shield anyway.”
The two of them sat down again after a long stare. The other captain returned to his spot after the tension calmed down.
“We make a great team, don’t we,” Verona said as she sat beside him.
She took his arm and pressed her chest onto him. Her eyes challenged him when he turned towards her in a surprise. The woman would eat him if there was no one around. He never thought he would refuse sex offers from a gorgeous, luscious woman.
Some give him a medal, please.
“No, I make a great team, with anyone,” he replied and looked at the darkness.
The lady scoffed but didn’t let him go. Well, she’s the boss now, isn’t she?
“Well, it’s odd how you don’t know what a Celestial is if you know who he represents.”
“I’ll play, Verona,” Artus smiled at her attempt. “SHE didn’t find it important to tell me that.”
“Oh! That is news, not even the fools looking around knew that but for an exchange, there is a very convincing story that they, the Celestials, know how to get there,” she pointed at the large planet hovering in the dark sky. “Well, among other rumors of their vast knowledge in magic.”
“For that, I can tell you that she is no longer anywhere close, her Core was somehow marked, and she is on her way to get rid of it for good.”
“Anything else you want to add, something we don’t already know?”
Artus shrugged at the captain, “how should I know what you guys already know if you don’t tell me? It’s simple logic. But I’ll throw another one out, the one she was looking for was the first Artus, and no, I don’t know where the old man is. She is smart enough not to tell me anything that might harm herself.”
“Now, working with him is much more worth it, don’t you think, Captain Mafu? And we don’t want to risk angering a Celestial, don’t we?” Verona turned towards him. “What are you to her?”
“Well,” he chuckled, “we fooled around plenty of times.”
Verona choked. Her face changed colors a few times. He was surprised to see jealousy and heartful pink were there in the end.
All the guard duties after that became a little awkward with stealing glances while she thought he wasn’t aware. He couldn’t dig any more information out of her without digging into her which would be great, but ultimately stupid.
She also could just make him agree with her whims as she was powerful enough to do that, but she had enough pride to not force him into it. They ended up flirting with one another most of the time.
-
In his room again, Artus sat in meditation as Verona had instructed him how, but he would say she wasn’t the best of teachers. Emptying his mind from thoughts wouldn’t be the best of ideas for him as he was almost always thinking about something.
It also might mean he was doomed to never be able to get the skill. Regardless, he still had folded his leg under him just because the reward would give him a huge advantage.
A condition that he could review anything at an accelerated time was something worth trudging along in the darkness. [Meditation] opened up more possibilities with it [Memory Lane] upgraded class skill. He would be a fool to not try to get it.
The door creaked open behind as the girls returned. Artus could feel the hesitation in the air as the girls approached him. They sat on either side before they grew the courage to tell him. It might have taken them a few days already.
“We had received an offer, Artus, to work as maids for a family in a big city.”
“And we think we will take it,” added Jane.
“You are telling me this because?”
“There is no position for any male as they had enough of them,” Cindy explained. “And we were offered only because of the [Arithmetic] you have taught us.”
“But you have to understand, this is a chance of our lifetime!” Jane insisted.
“Then what about Lilly?” He asked.
“We're going to get her when the darkness yields in a day or two,” Cindy said. “We couldn’t bring you or Kent along because all maids live with their employer, servants or not. Normal maids only have more freedom and payment.”
Artus sighed. “It’s okay, I understand,” he said to them. The two of them hugged his sides and he patted the naive girls' worried backs.
Their employer was no secret to him. The guard duty by the wall with Verona had been kept secret, and the girls were just too scared to realize the interaction he had with Verona during the attack.
There were volunteers who offered to make arrows or bolts for the guards, and he had used that excuse in the last few days. Verona had wanted to keep it under wraps and so he had respected the lady’s wish.
He felt bad to hide the fact that he knew who had offered them the job. Verona thought that she was doing him a favor so he didn’t need to worry about the girls, and she was right. He does worry about them after taking her deal.
There should be a reason why the silly girl didn’t tell him or them about each other's arrangements. He could guess that one of them might be the girls’ own safety.
The lady also might not be able to arrange them to live with him and telling them would only complicate things. They could be separated far from him if he didn’t know any better.
“We will never forget you,” said Jane as her body warmed up.
“Yes, we’ll- we’ll come and get you when we have enough money,” promised Cindy.
“Yes! We’ll do that,” Jane agreed. “We’ll take care of each other.”
Artus kissed both on their silly foreheads. “Don’t do that, silly, I might not be here anymore by that time. Who knows, I might already become famous somewhere.”
“Yeah, you are right. You were so brave, and we would have died if not for you,” Cindy recalled the flier's attacks as she shivered. “But will you remember us?”
“Of course, I will,” he smiled and gave the girls a reaffirming embrace.
“But let’s just make sure you will remember, okay?” June asked.
“How are you two going to do that?” He chuckled. They didn’t even last as long.
“With these,” Cindy held up a collection of small bottles filled with green goo. “These are stamina potions.”
“Where did you get that?”
“Our new employer, it’s our parting gift,” Jane smiled sinisterly as her hand slipped into his trousers.
Her head went down when she found it still limp. Jane swallowed him whole while Cindy began to kiss him. The memory of the combination of kisses by two girls at different places alone would last forever if anyone asked him.
Wait, what? What bullsh*t is this? Why is he just now randomly handing out information about his supposed lover? Say what you will about how she wouldn't have told him anything dangerous, but it's still utter bullshit. Just the wrong assumption about her gender would be very useful. Then he told them she has a marked core, which may or may not be a problem, he doesn't know much about this shit. Then he told them something about her destination! I agree she's a careful person, but just randomly spilling every damned thing you know about her is sheer idiocy.
And for what? Nothing. Jack shit. His first question confirmed their mission. Then just proceeded to just tell them every single thing he knew for funsies.
He's just trying to get her killed, right? Must secretly hate her or something. It's the only reasonable explanation.
He wanted to prove his worth. See the situation, everyone, even the famous sorceress and her escorts had to hide behind walls during the long night but not Nusia.
She didn't even hesitate to venture during the dark and a very dangerous period of time. The difference in power level is clear.
@Zimliz Prove his worth to his old flame that's already trying to get close to him and also learn his secrets with his defensive spell? She's even already agreed to help him with the school stuff. He has no need to prove his worth. She already values him a great deal. And he's already gotten more out of her than he wanted. There's no reason to try to become more valuable. And telling her everything he knows means his information is no longer valuable anyway. His only use in this matter now is as a pawn to be used against Nusia. The only thing he's doing here is putting Nusia and himself in danger.
And the difference in power level is absolutely not that clear. She went off to be a maidservant for how long? If you're stronger than anybody around, you pay your debts in ways that don't involve being a servant that's regularly raped for a decade and a half. Nor do you let your lover, MC's mother, fall into whatever pit of despair she was in due to fear of the MC's father. She was also extremely unhappy with MC's father, and is still running from him. If Nusia was that strong, none of this would have happened.
man, you are getting too deep in this with a lot of assumptions. Explaining everything would a huge spoiler so just take it as it is or leave it.
I don't want to debate anymore.
@Zimliz Alright, guess I'm leaving it then. The powerlevel stuff I can see having other factors going on, but MC wouldn't know. Not that it matters if he did, honestly.
MC straight up betraying her and offering himself up as both hostage and bait for her is just a bridge too far for me. The stupid bastard didn't even get anything for it. MC is just too extreme on the idiot and asshole spectrums for me to enjoy it.
Good luck with the story, you've got some interesting and pretty unique stuff going on with the cores and all that.
Exactly. That is a major negative for me.
Dropping the novel here.
I won't call giving that info as 'betraying'. How are they going to use it against her? By the time the long night ends (a few days) she could be miles away from them. They don't how she looked or where she heading.
He was sulking and he did get something out of it, emotional satisfaction of bragging at her that he had banged a Celestial.
Regardless, thanks for giving the story a shot.
@Zimliz Because it's not just a matter of where she is in two days. These people have resources, and are clearly willing to send even famous people off after whispers. Now they know it's a woman, not a man. They know she was in the area very recently. They know she has a marked core, which may or may not be directly or indirectly useful to them. If they can't directly find marked cores, they may be able to track down materials or knowledge needed to do it. The MC (and us readers) don't know enough about the world to say anything concrete about marking cores, so there are a ton of unknowns to account for. They know Celestials can have their cores marked, which might be informative. And they know she was in a situation to get it marked. They also know she has a relationship with a man named Artus, who can remove marks on cores. All of this is potentially hugely beneficial to their future efforts to track her down. It might not be this week, but what about next year?
And most relevant of all to MC, they know Nusia has some kind of relationship with him. One that should be deeper than a quick tumble given both his knowledge and the shared name. He's basically volunteered to be their bait and hostage. They can just watch him and have the best chance they've ever got to find Nusia. And they have all the time in the world to put together whatever they need to force her to cooperate by threatening him. Like say, poison him but keep feeding him something to treat the symptoms. Or something of that nature but magical, or whatever. That was just the first thing off the top of my head. You get the idea.
Basically, they went from fruitlessly chasing whispers to getting a shitload of confirmation, information, and leverage. They can investigate what they do know now to learn even more about her, and her past. This whole "find the Celestial" thing went from a nice dream to a matter of time.
@46rtyrty44 Really man? just more assumptions. Let's get to the facts, or at least according to what I've written, for the argument's sake, based on what MC knows.
He knows she's a Celestial, someone who should be special, had let herself go through indenture service for more than a decade like it was nothing to her. She didn't enjoy it, of course, but she wasn't scared by it, she hadn't ranted, or have nightmares or something. She even takes a lover of sorts right after the indenture, not what typical woman would do after being 'raped', as you said, almost every night.
Being a slave is horrible but she just shrugged it off.
She had been mingling with humans for at least more than a few decades (her adventure time + indenture), and yet no one knew she is a Celestial. They suspected but it means nothing without proof even while under enslavement. The master could have asked every slave to become his spy.
What do these two facts that tell the MC?
She could take care of herself.
It is true when we read from her perspective in chapter 15.
Human politics are child play compared to real power at her level.
To be truthful, I hate to explain everything because it shows my weakness as a writer, both in the story and in the comments. Well, that is just me.
Edit: I told myself to keep it short. Oops. Naturally a minute after posting I was able to simplify things a lot.
To keep this actually short... What if he's wrong? Even if we accept your explanation (I guess below is why I don't) that he has a few clues she might be pretty powerful... he certainly doesn't *know* that. So what if he's wrong? He's put together a few little assumptions and decided to gamble that this famous person from a powerful family pose absolutely no threat to Nusia no matter what they could possibly do.
But if he's wrong, he just seriously stabbed her deeply in the back. All so he could brag a little about screwing her?
Also, I mentioned it below but seriously who's going to read that. But what about himself? What if they decide to threaten or control him, in order to get to Nusia? How does he expect to get away safely?
---
@Zimliz I wasn't exactly positing all of that as factual information in your story. You've pretty much ensured the readers know as little about the world as the MC does, so there's a lot I can't really begin to know anything about. So I approach it from, more or less, the perspective I would. Basically look at the worst case scenario, and the costs of acting like it's true. Then look at the benefits of being more hopeful.
All of the powerlevel stuff with MC and Nusia is pure supposition on his part. Frankly he hasn't even known Nusia that long. She could be all kinds of f*cked up, or could have other circumstances forcing her hand. Yeah she briefly played off any long-term negative impacts of being slave while they were on their magic-fueled-lust-bender, but she was a slave for awhile. Can't be so pleasant no matter your view on the length of a decade. He knows she loved his mother, and Nusia stood by while she went off regularly to go screw his father. He's pretty sure things didn't go so well for his mother, which Nusia was also unable to prevent. He also knows she's running from his father now. That doesn't speak to great power either. She also ran off without him, presumably because she either wasn't strong enough to protect him or strong enough to carry the burden he'd be if he came along on her trip. The MC just doesn't know enough about this world, and about Nusia, to be sure of anything. And she was pretty surprised those guys guessed she was a Celestial. She's clearly also not going around telling everybody about it.
If you asked me to weigh the evidence based on what we, and the MC knows, I'd bet pretty strongly on it being a very good thing to keep her secret. Her seeming to be unaffected by being a slave is pretty shitty evidence for her being fight-the-world strong, and if she is then clearly she's also being forced by an even stronger power to lay low. Meaning even if she has the power, she can't use it. Her actions also all indicate she is not so awfully powerful, at least right now.
And he basically gambled on "well she didn't act like she cared too much about being a slave while we were f*cking all week, so obviously she's way more powerful than any organization or established power on this world" just so he could brag about screwing her.
Hell, MC was worried enough about the Celestial thing to warn her that his father suspected it. Then a few chapters later he's freely confirming it and passing on everything he knows about her to people searching for her because he's so convinced she's invincible?
I think you've let you author-only knowledge influence the MC's decisions.
And even if he did have some good reason to think she could go against the world, what assurance does he have for himself? What if they decide to put some kind of curse or something on him, so they can threaten her using him?
@46rtyrty44 If you go to what if route then nothing I can say could satisfy your perception.
Let's just agree to disagree.
@Zimliz My whole point is that MC needs to be considering the *what if* route. And he's just blatantly ignoring any of the possible consequences of his actions. That's why I find him so intolerable here.
And yes, I suspect that's the only plausible outcome here.
@Zimliz I think it'd just be best to retcon this chapter's exchange. If you never intended for what he said to have consequences, then omitting it won't change the story. Just admit that you're wrong and you let your author-vision influence the MC's actions. He hates when women backstab him and is very self-aware, so why would he be hypocritical here? It's out of character.
@Zimliz if you microwave food are cooking it?
@TagDaReaper @46rtyrty44 He's said it won't have consequences. Just headcanon that this conversation and any mentions of it afterward never happened. It's an easy fix. Just like I and many others headcanon'd that the Disney Star Wars movies never happened. Don't let the author being an idiot get in the way of you enjoying his story.
