A warm wind caressed my legs as Tom and I stood in front of a noble mansion, belonging to some lord who had a disgusting tax policy. I wouldn’t claim any tax policy was good, but his was particularly exploitive.

“It is not going as expected.” Tom stated, pointing towards the next house towards our right. Another one owned by a twat.

“What?” I asked.

“Dealing with illegal slavery.” He answered. I frowned slightly as this was already half of our income.

“What´s the problem?” I asked slowly.

“We gave up on trading with kids … but others took our place.” That was even more problematic than losing our business.

“Drive them out of the market.” I growled, already wanting to tear these men apart.

“I tried, but there are several small organisations that have the backing of one or more churches which in turn seem to be stirring beneath the surface.” My anger died down as I closed my eyes. If the ‘evil’ churches moved behind the scenes, it could only mean they decided to stab the saint in the back … and that was me.

“How troublesome … I don’t want any child to be dragged into this.” I stated slowly. If we could stop these child traffickers and the churches together, that would be ideal.

“So you are proposing?” He asked.

“… once we know where that damned unicorn is, we will lure them out altogether. I let myself be the bait and miraculously escape after a few weeks. Then, we will have some idiots hanging on the walls.” I could already see them hanging on the outer walls, scaring every law-abiding citizen and being a reminder for those who weren’t.

“Aren´t you worried about yourself? They will torture you.” He said, making me shrug nonchalantly. I didn´t care about myself enough to fear torture.

“I was tortured when you weren’t even born yet … that sounded a bit like I was proud of that fact, didn´t it?” I asked, slightly amused about myself.

“Yes.” He said, finally moving on towards the next mansion who looked to be tightly secured. Not a good place to rob.

“In any case, I don’t care what happens to myself. I´m used to it. Just make sure to protect the orphanage.” I said and with that, everything would be wrapped up nicely … if it worked, that is.
