River descended the marble staircase with the careful deliberation of someone who suspected the laws of physics might be taking a coffee break. Each step felt solid enough, but she'd learned in the past five minutes not to trust her assumptions about what was possible.

The Fiction Section sprawled before her like a theme park designed by someone with a literature degree and access to unlimited construction funds. Towering shelves created winding pathways that seemed to shift when she wasn't looking directly at them. Signs hung from the ceiling in fonts that matched their genres: Gothic horror in dripping letters, romance in flowing script, and science fiction in sharp, angular text that seemed to pulse with its own light.

Other people moved through the space, some confidently, others with the same bewildered expression River suspected she wore. A young man in a hoodie jogged past her, muttering something about "grinding for XP in the mystery section." A woman in business attire stood frozen in front of the horror shelves, staring at a book that appeared to be staring back.

River pulled out the library card Ms. Chen had given her. The surface shimmered, and text began appearing as if written by an invisible hand:

RIVER PARK - KNOWLEDGE SEEKER
Class: Librarian (Level 1)
Stats: INT: 15, WIS: 12, CON: 8, DEX: 10
Skills: [Organize] (Novice), [Research] (Novice), [Catalog] (Novice)
Current Quest: Complete Fiction Section Tutorial
Location: Fiction - Main Floor
Party: None

"Stats?" River said aloud, then immediately felt foolish. But if this was some kind of elaborate simulation or game, she might as well treat it as such until she figured out what was really happening.

She'd never been much of a gamer, but she'd watched enough of her younger brother's gaming sessions to recognize RPG elements when she saw them. The question was whether this was an incredibly advanced VR system, some kind of psychological experiment, or (her rational mind rejected the possibility) actually real.

A soft chime echoed around her, and a translucent blue window appeared in her field of vision:

TUTORIAL QUEST ACTIVATED
Welcome to the Infinite Archive! To help you acclimate to your new environment, please complete the following tasks:

1. Visit the Fantasy section and retrieve any book
2. Use your [Organize] skill to analyze the book
3. Return to the main desk
4. Survive

Rewards: 100 XP, Basic Skill Progression, Tutorial Completion Badge
Warning: Fiction Section creatures are active. Exercise caution.

The window faded, leaving River staring at the Fantasy section entrance. Someone had clearly invested significant effort in the aesthetic—the archway was carved to look like intertwined tree branches, and actual ivy grew around the edges. Small lights flickered like fireflies among the leaves.

River approached the entrance and paused. A small placard next to the archway read: "Fantasy Section - Level 1. Recommended for beginners. Contains: Goblins (1-3), Pixies (1-2), Minor Dragons (0-1), Quest Items (Variable). Emergency Exit: Speak 'Return to Library' three times."

"Contains goblins," River repeated slowly. "Right. Because of course it does."

She'd committed to treating this as a research challenge, and researchers didn't let minor obstacles like potentially hostile fantasy creatures stop them from gathering data. At least, they didn't if they wanted to finish their dissertations.

River stepped through the archway.

The Fantasy section felt different immediately. The air hummed with something that might have been magic, and the books on the shelves seemed more vibrant, their covers moving slightly as if the stories inside were restless. She could hear distant sounds—wind through trees, the clank of metal on metal, something that might have been laughter or might have been something less pleasant.

The shelves here were organized by subgenre, with clear signs marking "Epic Fantasy," "Urban Fantasy," "Fairy Tales," and "Arthurian Romance." River headed for the Fairy Tales section, figuring that if she was going to encounter mythical creatures, she might as well start with ones she'd been reading about since childhood.

She selected a blue leather book titled "The Complete Grimm Collection" and immediately felt a strange tingling in her fingers. The library card in her other hand grew warm, and text appeared:

ITEM ACQUIRED: Grimm's Fairy Tales (Enchanted Edition)
Quality: Common
Properties: Contains 47 complete fairy tales, some with active enchantments
Warning: May contain hostile narratives

Would you like to use [Organize] skill? Y/N

River thought "yes" and was surprised when the skill activated automatically. Her mind suddenly flooded with information about the book—not just bibliographic data, but deeper understanding. She could sense the stories inside, their themes and patterns, and most importantly, their potential threats.

The Three Little Pigs story contained an active Wolf entity, currently dormant. Hansel and Gretel housed a Witch construct that activated if someone read while hungry. Little Red Riding Hood had some kind of shapeshifting enchantment that River's novice-level skill couldn't fully analyze.

"Okay," she said to herself. "Books have monsters in them. I can work with this."

The [Organize] skill had also revealed something else: patterns in how the magical energy flowed through the book. There were safe stories (Cinderella appeared to be purely narrative) and dangerous ones that pulsed with active enchantments.

A rustling sound from behind a shelf made River freeze. Something was moving back there, something small and quick. She clutched the Grimm collection and considered her options. The tutorial had said to retrieve a book and return to the main desk. She'd completed step one.

The rustling came closer.

River's [Research] skill activated unbidden, flooding her mind with relevant information. Based on the size of the sounds and the current location, she was most likely encountering a Level 1 Goblin. Standard tactics: Goblins were curious but not immediately hostile. They were attracted to shiny objects and could often be distracted or bargained with.

She reached into her pocket and found, to her surprise, a handful of small silver coins that definitely hadn't been there before. The library card pulsed, and text appeared: Basic currency acquired. Tutorial provision.

A small green head peered around the edge of a bookshelf. The goblin was about three feet tall, with large ears and eyes that held more intelligence than River had expected. It wore what appeared to be a tiny library vest with a name tag reading "Grok - Reshelving Assistant."

"Human has book," the goblin said in accented English. "Human supposed to be here?"

River held up her library card. "I'm... a new Knowledge Seeker. Taking the tutorial."

The goblin's expression brightened. "Oh! Tutorial human! Grok help tutorial humans. Very important for library functioning." It scampered closer, examining the book in River's hands. "Human chose Grimm. Good choice for beginners. Many practice opportunities."

"Practice opportunities?"

"Stories want to be experienced, not just read. Book has three active narratives. Human want to practice [Organize] skill on safe story?"

River considered this. She was supposed to analyze the book, and having guidance from what appeared to be a friendly NPC could only help. "Which one is safe?"

Grok pointed to a section of the book that began to glow softly under his touch. "Cinderella very safe. Just transformation magic, no combat. Good for learning pattern recognition."

The [Research] skill confirmed this assessment. River opened to the Cinderella story and immediately felt the narrative trying to pull her in. But instead of resisting, she activated [Organize] again, this time focusing on the story's structure rather than its magical properties.

Suddenly, she could see the tale like a flowchart in her mind. Character motivations, plot progression, the inevitable happy ending—all of it mapped out in clean, logical patterns. More importantly, she could see the underlying magical mechanics that made the story function.

SKILL PROGRESSION: [Organize] - Novice to Apprentice
New ability unlocked: Pattern Recognition
You can now identify structural weaknesses in narrative-based enemies

"Very good!" Grok clapped his hands. "Human natural talent for organization. Want to try combat story? Grok supervise, keep human safe."

River hesitated. She was supposed to return to the main desk, but this felt like valuable learning. And if Grok could keep her safe...

"What would happen if I tried one of the dangerous stories?"

"Depends on story. Wolf story, human might get chased but probably not eaten. Good practice for running and problem-solving. Witch story, human might get captured but tutorial protection prevents actual cooking. Hansel and Gretel very educational for learning negotiation skills."

Before River could decide, a new sound echoed through the Fantasy section—heavy footsteps and something that might have been growling. Grok's ears perked up, and his expression grew concerned.

"Oh. Dragon patrol starting early today. Human should probably return to desk now."

"Dragon patrol?"

"Minor dragon. Level 3. Much too difficult for Level 1 tutorial human. Grok will distract. Human run to exit."

As if summoned by their conversation, a creature rounded the corner of the nearby shelves. It was about the size of a large dog, with scales that shifted color from green to blue to purple. Definitely a dragon, though "minor" seemed like a relative term when you were the one being stared at by something with actual fangs.

The dragon's eyes fixed on the book in River's hands, and it made a sound like a tea kettle having an argument with a motorcycle.

"Book thief," it said in a voice like crackling parchment. "Return story to shelf."

"I'm authorized!" River held up her library card. "Tutorial quest!"

The dragon examined the card with one large eye, then snorted. A small puff of actual smoke emerged from its nostrils. "Tutorial. Hmph. Fine. But human take too long. Dragon bored. Want entertainment."

"Entertainment?"

"Human demonstrate skills. Show worthiness for book borrowing. Or dragon take book back and human fails tutorial."

River looked at Grok, who was nodding encouragingly. "Human can do this. Just need to show organization skills. Dragon like efficiency."

The pressure was familiar, even if the circumstances weren't. River had spent years defending her research to professors who questioned her methods. This was just... a more literal version of academic challenge.

She opened the Grimm collection and activated [Organize], this time focusing on the entire book's structure. With her newly improved skill, she could see not just individual stories but the relationships between them. Patterns of character types, recurring themes, the underlying logic that connected seemingly different tales.

"I can reorganize your collection," River announced, surprised by her own confidence. "Your fairy tale section is currently arranged alphabetically, but that's inefficient for patron use. If I reorganize by theme and cross-reference by character archetypes, patrons could find stories more effectively based on their specific interests."

The dragon tilted its head, clearly intrigued. "Demonstrate."

River activated [Catalog] for the first time, and suddenly she could sense not just the book in her hands but the entire fairy tale section. Hundreds of stories, thousands of characters, all waiting to be properly organized. She began explaining her system—grouping stories by primary themes, creating cross-references for character types, establishing a difficulty rating based on magical intensity.

The dragon listened with growing interest, occasionally asking questions that showed genuine understanding of cataloging principles. When River finished her presentation, the dragon nodded approvingly.

"Acceptable. Human may keep book for tutorial completion. But must return when finished and implement reorganization plan."

"I... yes. Of course."

QUEST COMPLETED: Retrieve Book from Fantasy Section
BONUS OBJECTIVE COMPLETED: Impress Minor Dragon
REWARDS: 150 XP (bonus included), [Catalog] skill progression, Dragon Approval Status

"Human very promising," Grok said as the dragon wandered away to patrol other sections. "Most tutorial humans just grab book and run. River human think like real librarian."

River looked down at the book in her hands, then at her library card where her stats had improved:

RIVER PARK - KNOWLEDGE SEEKER
Class: Librarian (Level 2)
Stats: INT: 16, WIS: 13, CON: 8, DEX: 10
Skills: [Organize] (Apprentice), [Research] (Novice), [Catalog] (Apprentice)

She'd actually leveled up. In a library. By doing what she loved most—organizing information and helping others access it efficiently.

For the first time since clicking that mysterious email link, River smiled.

"Thank you, Grok. I should get back to the main desk."

"Grok see River human again soon. Fantasy section always need good organizers. Many stories getting restless lately."

River made her way back through the winding paths of the Fiction section, the Grimm collection tucked securely under her arm. Other Knowledge Seekers she passed now looked at her with something that might have been respect; apparently, successfully completing a tutorial quest with a bonus objective was noteworthy.

At the main desk, Ms. Chen waited with the same artificial smile, though it seemed slightly more genuine now.

"Excellent work, River. Tutorial completion with bonus objectives is quite impressive for a first day. You're showing real aptitude for this work."

"What exactly is this work?" River asked. "I mean, I understand I'm here to help with some kind of information crisis, but what does that actually mean?"

Ms. Chen's expression grew more serious. "The Infinite Archive is more than just a repository of knowledge, River. It's a testing ground, a training facility, and increasingly, a battleground. Information itself is under attack, and we need people who understand how to organize, preserve, and defend it."

She gestured toward a door River hadn't noticed before, marked "Advanced Sections - Level 2+ Required."

"Your real education begins tomorrow. But for now, you should rest. You'll find your dormitory assignment on your library card. Dinner is in the refectory, and I recommend talking to other Knowledge Seekers. You'll need allies for what's coming."

River looked at her card, where new text had appeared with directions to something called "Novice Quarters - Room 247."

"Ms. Chen? That dragon mentioned that stories have been getting restless. What did that mean?"

The artificial smile faltered completely. "Some of the deeper archives are experiencing... disturbances. Narratives becoming hostile, information systems failing, and entities that should remain dormant becoming active. It's why we need people like you, River. People who can bring order to chaos."

As River walked toward the dormitory area, following signs that helpfully rearranged themselves to point her in the right direction, she reflected on her first day in the Infinite Archive. She'd been transported to an impossible library, assigned a character class like a video game protagonist, negotiated with a goblin, and impressed a dragon with her cataloging skills.

It was, without question, the most productive day of her academic career.

The dormitory hallway looked reassuringly normal: basic carpet, fluorescent lighting, numbered doors. Room 247 opened to reveal a simple but comfortable space with a bed, desk, bookshelf, and window that looked out over what appeared to be an endless library that stretched to the horizon.

River set the Grimm collection on her desk and sat down to process the day's events. Tomorrow, she would venture into more advanced sections, learn new skills, and presumably face greater challenges. But tonight, she had a fairy tale collection to analyze and a growing suspicion that she might actually be good at this Knowledge Seeker business.

She opened the book to the Wolf story and activated [Organize], curious to see what patterns she could find in narrative-based magic systems.

Outside her window, the Infinite Archive hummed with the whispered conversations of a million stories, all waiting to be cataloged, understood, and preserved.

River Park's real education was just beginning.
